Can someone tell what the position/responsibilities of a "chief whip" is in British politics? thanks

@frantic1971 The role of the Chief Whip is to ensure that members of their political party vote for legislation in Parliament in the way that the Party wants them to vote for. There are three different kinds of 'whip' - the three-line whip which means party MPs *have* to vote that way or face punishment, two-line whip means you can not vote if you get someone on the opposite side not to vote, and single-line is basically a recommendation.

@frantic1971 Funny thing is, in the 18th century, the job of the Chief Whip and the other Whips was pretty much to go round all the local brothels and pubs and drag Members in for votes. Maybe Mr Stoat's ancestor was in there.

Thank you very much for posting! This is my favorite British Trilogy: "House of Cards", "Playing the King" and "Final Cut". The first two parts are based on Michael Dobbs books. Ian Richardson was perfect actor! RIP.
