  • You have to be shitting me. I have been searching for this for years!

    Thanks

  • I can do all this on my PC now! 30 years later! Amazing!

  • I ALWAYS figured this to be @DYNAMITE ! Great and Unusual,I could never get enough of this Video back then!

  • Yeah a wonderful song with something for every one but especially Neil's son Ben.

  • I remember going to this tour. I expected to see Neil Young the hippy and was blown away by this. I remember him going to the drum set, key board, ect and playing a rif or two that kept repeating. I had no idea what a sample was then but it was so cool the Neil played all the instruments without needing to be standing at them.

  • I toured with Neil, this was the album of the day Love it!!! (The Krauts didn't wholly)

  • Trans best thing Neil ever did

  • Audience: "srsly wtf ?!?!"

Folk Rock Hippy: "Neil !! rock yer harmonica !!"

Neil Young: " I'm gonna rock this vocorder because I've got balls of steel !!!"

  • I remember watching this!

  • This is phenom! Neil was inspired by DEVO to go electronic after the Human Highway project. Ever the chameleon, Neil wore his new colors well. Damn the haters who put his foray into this style down, condemned him for it. They'd have him eating breakfast with that harmonica on, forever strapped to that piece of hollow wood. DAMN them! Rock on Neil, keep on changin' !

  • I really don't think in the history of rock n' roll that there was or is anyone with a bigger set of balls than neil young. followed his muse relentlessly despite the serious knockers - he was sued by the execs for making music unrepresentative of neil young for chrissakes,

  • every one makes mistakes. So whas Neil. And this was a big one!!!!

  • @roofvishoek Spoken well from a person whom obviously is not a musician or has any creative ability. Trans was not a mistake but a step forward way ahead of his time, and the shallow music world of 1981 did not have the ability to grasp it and appreciate the efforts it took to produce it back then. Also, creating music must always remain an extention of ones emotions.

Rock-on Neil or any musician willing to bend the curve even if it breaks..

  • I saw it in the the day and its the only clip "The old grey whistle test " ever showed on 2 consecutive weeks by popular demand. Niel hated this and he thought the fans would as well, it was still outstanding and new.

  • Are the words "dirty mind, dirty mind". Probably not.

  • @11xzxzxz sorry man it is - new design, new design

  • @drcanehdian Ha sure that makes sense. Thanks.

  • NILS!!!!!

  • I saw this whole concert on TV when I was babysitting for a family friend. I was so blown away by it that I told the family friend about it. It so turned out that he had the vinyl record ("Trans")....and he GAVE IT TO ME !!!! This started a life-long abession with this brilliant album...

  • this is funny

  • It's hard to believe this is from OGWT, since it's remarkably like the original MTV video from the Berlin tour. There was a time during the release of "Trans" and "Everybody's Rockin'" that I wondered if he went crazy or something, but I have to admit that while this isn't what he does best, Sample and Hold is a work of genius. Too bad the Berlin video isn't on YT anymore.

  • neil goes giorgio moroder

  • @philipperholland ... or Kraftwerk

  • @philipperholland neil goes neil young more like.

  • This was so unique and just really got into my soul at the time. He was so all over the map with styles and sounds at the time. I saw him a couple years after this wanting to see this and the heavy My My Hey Hey type material and he was doing that album of swing/country crap ala Stray Cats. It didn`t play too well in Peoria Il, which is where I saw him. He didn`t seem to care and as always stayed true to what he wanted to do. Really interesting guy thru the years...

  • I saw the whole concert in Stockholm! It was fantastic!!

  • @marelinor driv inte??? hade dött för det

  • @dangerbirdzuma Driver inte...satt på femte raden...:)

  • Saw the video the first time MTV showed it. I went out the next day to get the album.

    FANTASTIC STUFF!

  • This is soooo cool-tear 'em up JOE LALA !!!

  • This wasn't Old grey Whistle test. It was the Trans tour in West Berlin.

  • such a unique song , long live neil young a true genius!! the lord of music!

  • Anyone saying this is awful is too young to appreciate the 80's since you probably weren't even born yet.

  • @ookamihana Actually, I was alive and out of high school when this came out and I thought it was total crap then and I still do ... but I still love Neil Young. He just had to get this experiment out of his system. I for one am grateful that it was purged quickly :D But then, I thought the 80's sucked the whole decade .... couldn't have been more happy when the 90's happened.

  • Even though they look like drugged up homo's I bet they have tapped so much arse! What a funny but cool tune. I had to read a translations to even understand what the fuck the were saying. Anyone esle?

  • Fucking awful!

  • Is there a full song version of this somewhere,or is this it? Great Song & great CD! Neil has never been too afraid to do new things even at the risk of pissing people off!

  • There's full version at myspace videos. You should be able to find it with google. Amazing performance by the way :)

  • what's the name of the concert on DVD...I would love to get that one. I'm a huge Neil fan...in fact, i had a dream last night that he sang me a song after I recognized me in a train station and he played a conch shell. LOL!

  • The concert was 'Neil Young & Crazy Horse in a Rusted Out Garage'. Broadcast on PPV fron the Cow Palace near San Francisco, November 21, 1986. Don't think it's ever been officially released. Amazing show. I have it on ancient mono VHS.

  • I got the DVD, it's Live in Berlin.

  • nevermind, sample and hold. awesome!

  • wierd.....

  • Actually, this song is about buying a robot girlfriend. Crazy awesome...

  • I saw this tour when I was 17..One of the Best neil young tours ever..I saw Neil over 25 times too..good stuff, Thanks for the post..

  • i think this was an HBO show not OGW

  • i agree. i rember listening to this when i was about 6 too, it was pretty creepy. a lot of pepole were mad but i think its cool. i have the dvd some where. just wish i could find it

  • dude I remember listeneing to this when I was like 6 years old, and I was totally blown away by this, I thought actual robots were sing this!!!!

I was so mesmerized and obsessed with this song that it used to drive me crazy and I always was really into neil young even at that young age

  • I know what you mean, me and my mates at the time used to nickname it the 'Cylon song' - (the robots from a sci fi show )

  • @Len1977gt lol..I felt the exact same way!!!! I thought those robot voices were the coolest thing ever. It never left my head from the time I was 6 years old!!!!!

  • @Len1977gt I konw what you mean. It did the same thing to me as a kid. I was 6 or 7 when I first heard it and it NEVER left me! It was beyond cool for me!

  • @mrhoffame I was 18!

  • @Len1977gt that makes two of us, I was 6 and my dad handed me the record. He was a huge Neil Young record, and he bought me one because I couldn't leave his alone. I was nuts over it and still love it totay! This was music of the future right!? This song was the best one, but Transformer Man was good too. There's a Neil Young Live in Berlin vhs video where he does both songs and I know you'd like it, I had that as well as a kid :-)

  • When Neil started making this kind of stuff, I understand that people were pissed off. But looking back on it, it actually has a wierd charm xD

Awesome! I wanna hear him play some trans next time I see him xP

  • @necrotelicomnicon remember neil is a chameleon first with country rock then rock, grunge (i hate that term), political. Plus he started the digi-tube technique for digital recording

  • Wowwowowowowowo.. it is really now A new design ...new desing ...

I need a unit to sample and hold

    But not the lonely one

    A new design, new design.

this song makes feel as if i hear it from the space .. it is really wonderful and Neil Young is really creator

    i really love it

  • Neil wrote this for his son with cerebral palsy and created a unique and cool sound.

  • @11xzxzxz Transformer Man was written for his son.

  • @JonB83 OK thanks. I wasn't into Neil much then but I did like Sample and Hold but Transformer Man is not as good imo. But it is better than Mr Soul Dance Remix which I hate, as they screwed with one of my favorite songs of all time and now someone must die. ha.

  • fuck year

  • i had sex to this the other night it was great she digs neils vocodor

  • Neil is Booji

  • its actually live in berlin 82!

  • Yea, the Berlin video that MTV used to show. There was a clearer version of this posted, but it keeps getting booted off.

  • the live version of this song on the cd "Lucky Thirteen" is better than the original version. Neil's live performances bring something to his songs anyway, but particularly on the synth-stuff he was doing on Trans.

  • I had this album and someone decided they liked it better than me, I guess. Never thought I'd see Neil use vocoders and thought I would hate it when I heard about it. Damn, this brings back memories, or are they flashbacks? lol

    c

  • This song is painfully addictive. I really want the album now.

  • i like it

  • New wave Neil sounding like Mr. Roboto-era Styx.

I sorta liked this when it came out but it hasn't aged very well. Can't be too harsh on the guy though ... even the most creative individuals lay an egg once in awhile.

    I much prefer "Wonderin'."

  • same here!

  • The version I would love to hear of this is from MTV Unplugged. It was one of two songs that were edited from the final version.

  • check out nils

  • Nils lofgren is the man

  • this is fucking awesome I must say. the higher vocoder is beautiful...

  • yep that's Nils Lofgren doing the high part

  • just listening to this again!

  • /watch?v=ywSZ-g3BIpI

that one here on youtube has the full live version, better sound quality and eerie japanese 'fembots' Neil was prescient as always

  • I haven't seen this for 20 odd years

  • "We hope you like our new direction"

  • The audience don't seem to know what to think! Great '80s stuff anyhow.

  • Trans is my fav Neil Young album. You can thank DEVO for making it happen.

  • No, this era (Trans) was inspired by Kraftwerk.

  • Neil did this also on the Berlin tour in the early 80's.I still have a version on vhs with the cinemax version. Hope I can submit from the tape for everyone to enjoy.

  • That would be brill, let us know if you do.

  • nils lofgren to me looks like keith richards' healthier brother or something lol. he's the man.

  • i love this song

  • Moog 16-Channel MBVO 327A Vocoder

    synthmania. com/Famous Sounds/Images/Moog_vocoder.jpg

  • There was a live concert from NoCal during the Landing On Water tour. It was called "Neil Young & Crazy Horse in a Rusted Out Garage." Featured Sam Kinison as an angry next-door neighbor. At the end the police arrive and shut them down. They play everything, including this and Computer Age. The roadies are dressed like mutants and there are RC cockroaches roaming the stage. Don'y know if it was ever released, I just have it on VHS from the original broadcast from 1986.

  • Sounds good, can you post it on Utube?

  • If I can burn the show onto a disc and then onto my computer I'll see what I can do; or maybe send you a disc.

  • would seriously like to see a copy of this sounds like neil gold, might be released in a later archive series

  • Trans (the album this tunes on) was actually received poorly among critics so was his On the Beach album, actually, most of his Geffen records were poorly received.

  • On the beach has saved my life!

  • No F'N way.. Ilove this song. I remeber this being on HBO. thanks for posting. I heart you!

  • way ahead of its time! maybe why it was not accepted back then. awesome performance. anybody know where one can see the whole concert? thanks lorc1313!

  • I wish I could see the whole concert, I was lucky to get this off a mate of mine, he had it on a video tape that he recorded off the TV in 1980 or there abouts

  • I have the whole concert

  • The concert is commercially available from Rhino. "Neil Young in Berlin" is the title.

R2 976617 is the catalog number, if that helps.

  • your right it was in berlin, i remember seeing this on hbo in 1983, thank you radharc!

  • one of my favourite neil young albums. at the time he was ridiculed for putting it out. now it stands up as one of his best (IMO).

he really should re-issue this on cd with a proper re-mastering. and re-release the berlin DVD with 5.1

  • Well berlin dvd is re-released, i just bought it.

  • I love the way Neil walks. I wish that there where this whole song on live.

  • BRILLIANT SONG & ALBUM! ~

  • THis is better then his hippie stuff

  • was computer age not on this show aswell?

  • yes, i still got the VHS

  • did you know that the bassist on this show and tour was the original Buffalo Springfield bassist? Bruce Palmer was his name and I met him a few years ago when he lived in north little rock arkansas where I live. he was dating my boss and she didn't know who neil young was!! Todd Rundgren, Keith Richards and Pete Townsend used to call him at all hours and she didn't know who THEY were either! In fact, i loaned him my old NY LP's so he could re-learn some of the songs for the tour! true story.

  • "new design, new design"

  • killer song..I remember the video from around 1982 or so.

  • This song is in full, in fantastic audio quality (it's been mixed really well) on the DVD 'Neil Young in Berlin' from 1983. You can buy it on Amazon and it's fantastic. There's lots of other Trans material on it (possibly my favourite Neil album!) and the band, contrary to rumours about this tour, play like a well-oiled machine. It's also worth it for the song 'Berlin', which was only played on this night, and never again since!

  • There was an entire video of this song here about six months ago and it dissapeard. That version was clear and the audio was full. Oh well, thanks anway.

  • I do have a higher quality version but somthing has happened to the file and it won't play so I am looking for the original to upload. As soon as I find it I will put it on this page for you.

  • Song is "Sample and Hold" from the album "Trans"

  • Thanks for that, I have renamed it. you wont believe how long I have been trying to find this info.

  • Nils Lofgren & Neil Young remember it well. Thanks.

  • whey-hey, I am sure you are right, I have been comparing old pics and videos and it does look like neil young, Thanks for that, the clip was recorded was years ago and I always wondered who it was. Thanks again.

  • I think one of them is.....????? Neil Young!!!!
