  • Awesome job, really put life into perspective!!!

  • how i mit your mother ? :D

  • i miss you so much dad

  • this song gives me goose bumps but i still love it

  • this song makes me cry everytime

  • Gotta love the Mets beating the Yanks 6-0 in the bottom of the ninth at Yankee Stadium!

  • I LOVE U

  • Every time I listen to this song I love the story he sings. This video was spectacular it made a real portrayal of what Harry Chapin sung.

  • I'm sorry!!

  • Great song, it is so true. My four year old asked me the other day, "Why do I have to work all the time." I told him that it's for all the things that we have, house, cars, toys, the vacations we take, etc. But later that evening when I got home I realized that all he wants is to spend time with me. I have since cut back the number of hours that I am at work past my expected 40. My son needs me, and more importantly I need him.

  • @Schoolyard4 woah woah wait a minute you take vacations

  • Boy this song is so sad yet sweet. I miss my dad now

  • My boys had a wonderful father he had to work like that to make the money to give them all the things they wanted and pay for the big house etc. He is a hard worker. Now both boys are like him big homes family, they have good jobs that require allot of work. You have to work when you can and you miss the good times it is life. Great video . thank you ;)

  • This is how my two boys grew up they had, horses, swimming pool, basketball court large house pool table room, motor bikes, cars, yet there dad was always working an engineer designer always at the office I felt sorry for them I kept them busy baseball, soccer, etc, still they would of like to have there dad home, now it repeats itself I saw my grandson outside alone the only child in this BIG house playing with his glove and baseball reminded me of this song.

  • growing up I used to listen to this song and swear to myself that I would never be that father, my dad was army special forces and was gone all the time and it sucked. and here I am 25 years old, 5 month old son, in the military, and if i am not working 12's i am in a foreign country so that he can have a good life when he grows up. not looking for sympathy, just sharing a story, cherish your moments when you have them.

  • BEST SONG EVER!!!

  • this song gives me a feel

  • brought tears to my eyes ;)

  • This song is not about a bad father but rather the struggles in life and the affect it has on families

  • You did a wonderful job depicting what Chapin was teaching. Yes teaching! Rather it be your child or anyone in your life you may receive back what you've done to others. I think the essence is what can happen when past meets the future. For every "action" there will always be a "reaction". Thank you for making a wonderful video. I appreciate you bringing Chapins words to life symbolically! If anyone cannot see this, by all means please purchase some glasses.

  • Very nice, thanks for sharing!

  • Every time "that's okay" I burst into tears.

  • i cried

  • Total frikkin waste of four minutes of my time.

Let's see. Some dipshit posts pictures from every line in the song and thinks he's some sort of wizard. This is why abortion on demand is legal.

  • @bensonhedges2 hey who cares its a good song and i think he did good on this video

  • I used to sing this song to my son, used to be the only song that would put him to sleep! He is 5 now and loves the song himself, i put on a video of him singing his version of it with his guitar! Quite funny! Have a look for yourselves i titled it my boy and his version of cats in the cradle

  • Thank you for putting this together. It is also a wonderful warning to new parents and I sure wish I had listened!

  • I wish i grew up with a dad...

    What an asshole

  • THIS IS NOT THE REAL MUSIC VIDEO

  • @frogforty8 Exactly why it says it isn't the official music video in the title/description.

  • @frogforty8 lol tard.

  • This is the realest song I've ever heard of. My father always said it reminded him of his father. My grandfather passed away a fear years ago.. I'm still young, and If I ever let my relationship get like this with my father, I'd die.. It makes me tear up just thinking about it..

  • My dad is in georgia im in a divorced family and i live up north 12 hours away and see him every 4/6 weeks.......,,....

  • Your interpretation and transition are just perfect for this song. It's my first viewing & I'm sharing it on FB in honor of Harry Chapin's birthday. Thank you for a fine piece of art.

  • I read the whole description and it was definitely worth reading. Thanks!

  • my dad said this song reminds him of me. damn

  • i cry everytime i hear this song because it pretty sums up my relationship with my dad. because the economy sucks he works alot more, waking up at 5 and going to bed around midnight. he spends any free time he can with me and my brother and sister. no matter what. but those are only a few hours on friday and saturday night. he is my idol.

  • Oh I get it, the pictures show the kid growing up without his dad in the picture rite?

  • mna i treated my dad like shit, i wish i could take it all back.

  • @LoreJunkie If your dad still here.......start creating new memories

  • wow. this has the be worst video ever.

  • A kid showed up just the other day. I dont know how but it was kinda cool,There was stuff to do so I got really busy, and when he grew up he was all pissed off he said I dont want to be like you dad and I sure dont want to live in a cave.

  • this is my life my dad worked away so do I.

i miss my wife and kids.

    WHAT IS A LIVING WORTH!

    Good money bad life!!!

    i love my boys

  • this is like seeing my life in perspective

  • This is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

  • This can really happen to you,I Know!

  • I enjoyed the video I think it shows respect to a great song writer who died to soon

  • Great song, a definite lesson on life for sons and fathers. My father can't listen to this song in front of me because of the relationship with his father. He didn't want to have it like that, he was Army, so was gone a lot. He didn't let it happen though, he worked hard when he was home to ensure we had a good relationship. I now have a son, and sometimes my work in the military eats up a lot of time. When I deployed it was especially true... After deployment, I make sure I am home ASAP.

  • Such a great song, Such a great Artist! Thanks suprisingly to watching "king of the hill" to enlighten me to such meaningful music!

  • awsome video man props !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what a song i miss this

  • this guy was an extremely good song writer. listen to his song taxi. its very good

  • This definitely worth doing instead of homework.

  • A life lesson, in song....

  • For true... The last time my dad and I were out shooting, this song was on the radio on the way home. The day before my parents moved acrossed the country.

  • alot of girls around the world say that the main man in their life is there hubby, bf, fiance but this isnt always true and guys will say that the main man in there life is their child or also hubby, bf, fiance but i say this is false yes there are some of you who grew up without a father figure around but alot of us also had one there, so in other words the main man in mylife is my father and to those which say this is gay..this isnt true, it's called father to son love

  • @Shaddra666 i agree with what you mean, but you said it in the gayest way possible

  • Comment removed

  • I love the way you describe the video puts into perspective. Love the song and the video awesome job! :D

  • Es ist sehr selten das mir bei einem Song die Tränen kommen! Very awsome!!!!!

  • U did awesome dude, love it!

  • This song makes me wish I had a good father

  • Comment removed

  • @makedonec702 this song makes me wish i still had a dad. i treated him like shit and now hes gone....

  • wow u did a rlly great job i always think bout my dad wen i hears this i think about wen im older and that he might not be around much longer this song makes u think wich not a whole lot of songs do any more so great job on the video

  • Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon." / Said the old man, "I do that too."

The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants." / "I do that too," laughed the little old man.

Said the little boy, "I often cry." / The old man nodded, "So do I."

"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems / Grown-ups don't pay attention to me." / And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand. / "I know what you mean," said the little old man.

A Shel Silverstein poem this song reminded me of.

  • Video should be renamed: "Cats in the Cradle" Picture Song. Will get more hits. Btw, loved it.

  • HOW THE HELL DOES ANYONE NOT LIKE THIS? REALLY

  • @pauljcjr I kno right... today was my first time hearing this song, and I INSTANTLY fell in love wit it

  • my mom loved this song :3

  • who ever clicked dislike on this seriously needs to question their purpose for living...

  • Great job, great song from my childhood. Thanks for posting.

  • i love this song

  • Nice Work!

  • i play at my dad marmoreal

  • my dad just die and im onley 12 and i love this song

  • story of my life : (

  • Barney Stinson brought me here.. :D

  • im only 16 and as i aged i really did wana be just like my dad who is now 60

  • Everyday when I come home from work, the first thing I think about is playing with my 11 year old son who can't speak (due to autism). But I can tell he's a happy boy that likes to smile and play, and wants somebody to play with. It would kill me to go through what the man in this video speaks of going through. I wish my son would stay young forever.

  • @Calcium1857 I AM UTISTIC AND I CANT SPEAK BUT OTHER THAN THAT I AM OK I LOVE THIS SONG AND I AM SO GLAD YOUR NOT LIKE SOME PARENTS THAT ARE ASHAMED OF THER CHILDREN BEING THAT WAY!!!!!!

  • @Calcium1857 that's a beautiful comment.

  • Harry would have LOVED this. It's done in simplicity and portrays what it was meant to. Anything else would have been overdone.

It's sad that he was killed in a car crash and will never see it.

At fourteen you had such a wonderful understanding of this song. Keep doing this, you were meant to.

  • i dont know why your getting all these haters all of the sudden, i first watched this video 2 years ago and i havent watched it in a while but you did a wonderful job and i love your explanation with the pictures and clocks and such, very good job and i love this song/video :)

  • wait if my dad wanted to talk with me he wouldnt give me the car keys he would tell me to sit my a** down and talk lol

  • DEDICATED TO MY SON JUSTIN....I LOVE YOU WITH ALL OF MY HEART AND SOUL....

  • MY BOY IS COMING HOME SOON AND I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

  • You were 14 when you created it. I think you did a great job and it was insightful from a 14 year old's perspective. I remember when this song came out. I thought about my Dad and me and how this song paralleled my own life. It's the cycle of life. All of these years have passed and my two sons are grown. Although, we are still tight, I am experiencing the drift between us. They now have their lives to live with their families. So goes, the cycle of life. Again, good job.

  • I want to say that you can definitely see the meanings of life and the appreciation thereof. Reading the description you wrote definitely made sense in my eyes, not sure of the others who've posted on here. I lost my dad last year to cancer but it was with that moment how I finally realized how cruel time can be. Time, unlike money is only given to us once in our lives. We can't earn it or replenish it ever. I've learned to be careful on how I spend it.

  • swear to god i love this song

  • Not video, slideshow...

  • WOW! This has always been a fav song of mine , I have a work aholic father. I never saw him growing up. This is so awesome! It gave me goosebumps. I cried. Thank you for your vid. To hell with the assholes that don't get it and dislike this vid. they are numb-shits!

  • This video is a fail, you can add your "clues" to make it seem your philosohpical but the truth is- YOU FAILED!

  • @MalcolmHeardSB You think it is so bad then you make a better one with the same equipment, amount of money AND knowledge of a 14 yr old. You know you can't, so instead you bitch about other people's artistic work. What a sleeze! Get a life!!!

  • @MsJams1234 quit yelling im trying to listen to this song

  • @bejentlebekind nobody cares, its a kids youtube video, get over it douchebag.

  • I love this video, its beautiful you did a great job!!! pat yourself on the back

  • you call 360p high def?

  • @MalcolmHeardSB Being posted in 2008, at the time, YouTube had two settings. Standard and 'High-Quality'. High-Quality became 360p, before they came out with HD. So I never called it High-def. High-Quality and High-def are two completely different things. HQ is just outdated.

  • @Rakin2008 BURN

  • @Rakin2008 no rakin you did the best video and song i ever seen they do not make songs like this anymore very outstanding job

  • @MalcolmHeardSB lol back in 08 this was as good as it gets i thiink. oh just scrolled and seen the uploader explain that. Quiet your mind and listen

  • Great Video Rakin! It has just as much meaning as the actual song! Can't believe you were only 14 at the time

  • awesome music + vid, great job man ;)

  • Cat's in the Cradle is one of my fav songs from my early childhood & still love it as a adult. Love this song for it's songwriting with meaning. The video is great . thanks for posting this 70's classic !

  • I like it but maybe too many scene

    changes? Less is better.

  • Just watched it again. I love this song and I love the video you've made. Thanks Rakin, much appreciated.

  • Sorry dad.

  • Forget everyone else. Who are they, movie makers? I doubt it. This is a great piece of work and most impressive for doing it at a young age.

  • I think you did a wonderful job with this! I liked your billy joel one too! the "we didn't start the fire". You have some real talent here! I hope you will cultivate it! You never know...Blessings! and much luck to you!

  • ACCORDING TO VH-1, this song was written as a result of his wife's EX-BOYFRIEND'S experience. Chapman did NOT experience this and it is NOT, at all, symbolic. It is taken from REAL ACCOUNTS. Her ex. LIVED this song.

  • BBBOOOOO YYYYAAAAANNNNKKKKKKEEESSSSS

  • the most epic song in history hands down dont hate haters this shit is my happy place everyone listen to this song again and again i mean it do it now or get owned by a speeding bus seriously

  • My dad just passed away, and I inherited his knifemaking shop. My biggest regret was simply being too busy with my life to really and truly appreciate how skillful he was until I was cleaning out and packing up the stuff, and I was able to see his genius at each level of construction of a knife, along with his design of custom tooling and benches. I hope I can honor his skill with my own, but I have a lot to learn. In the meantime, I have to figure out how to get this song out of my head!

  • along with Leader of the Band, great father's day song

  • Why is there a playground when "we'll get together then" is said?

  • @Ranieri069 because that's where dads take their young kids to play?

  • @garyconyers i guess your right, but by then would they both be older men. they wouldnt want to play on the playground then, would they?

  • @Ranieri069 The park is showed the first time he sings the verse, which is shortly after the kid is born. Afterwards, he says "My son turned 10 just the other day". So they wouldn't be older men by then. The second time he sings it, it shows a baseball park, and shortly afterwards, it mentions him off to college...another middle ground. The 3rd time he says it, it shows a city. Each time he says the verse, it gets more mature for the kid is getting older...the final time it shows an empty house.

  • @ScypaxPictures ah i see, it makes more sence now then.

  • @ScypaxPictures Ah, it makes more sence now. I like it

  • The first half of the rocky, but the second half was brilliant. Good job!

  • great fucking tune.

  • I found nothing wrong with the video it brought a tear to my eye.

  • great job

  • @bejentlebekind I have to disagree on the screw you dad part

  • One of his best songs

  • good video

  • nonoffical?

  • "he walked away but his smile never did" . . . chokes me up everytime

  • @bejentlebekind He was a humble guy. He'd just like that he had fans.

  • @bejentlebekind I was 14 when I made it, as I explain in the description. And I also know of this deeper meaning and intergraded it in the best way I could at the time...which is again...explained in the description. Trust me I am well aware of the song's meaning.

  • I love this song!

  • Perfect!!

  • This song is the theme of my generation. I was a kid who grew up in the 70s and our fathers were hard workers. I would not have wanted it any different. Our dads my have worked long hours, but they taught us great values and our moms were home. I know that many kids would have wanted it the way we had it. We were damn lucky to live when we did. Thanks, Dad. I miss you.

  • i like this video becauseof how simple it is

  • This was really nice. The symbolism was subtle and beautiful. I think we are so used to being hammered with stuff with traditional music vids we see that something that is simple gets lost in translation.

  • This song makes me wanna cry every time i here it but i love to listen to it cuz this song motivated my dad not to do this to me

  • theres a slide of a park in BC i used to stop at all the time

  • i love this song my dad showed it to me its awesome

  • i like the video. nice job.

  • The older a man grows, the more he realizes the profound and poignant truth in this song.

  • Its SO sad ;(

  • remember this one from the sweet days of youth, nice video!

  • seems like you put a lot of time and thought into this video. It is pretty good i really like it. It is much better than what i can do. nice explanation also, i read it obviously, I didnt even notice the meaning behind the song or video. this helped a lot to increase my understanding of the video. Good luck. and once again thank you. Jon Brandon Rancman

  • I actually decided to read your meaning behind it, definitely so much thought put into this video. I use to have this video Favorited on a older account. I never really read your meaning or thought process of the video until today, and it makes a lot of sense, Almost to much for how old I would think you are. To those who haven't read his meaning behind it, make sure you look. Just read it while your watching/listening. It's actually quite brilliant. Great job, great video, and great mind. A++.

  • Awesome job on the pics relating to the song...my favorite video for this song...thanks

  • Dwight Schrute singing this in the Office!

  • :) Great slideshow! I get it. =]

  • this video seems to be my favourite version of this song ^^

  • whooooooooooo kaufmannnnnn stadiuuummmm

  • @hope11ification Oh shit man, something went wrong with the comments, I thought you were being hostile to me, sorry man.

  • @hope11ification Ehh what are you trying to say?I shouldn't force my opinion on others?I created Lost?I'm an "egotistical bully liar" for trying to be a better person?

  • Haha I just read theRakin2008's explanation! If you have to write a fucking essay over the symbolic meaning of what your symbolic meaning for this song, I think you failed. F- BITCH!

  • @RupertandTurtle Why so negative asshole?

  • Very nice! You have a sharp mind and probably a lot of patience, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I can't understand why anyone would leave anything less than a positive comment. Ignore them if they don't offer constructive input to you!

  • Man wot happened to chilled songs like this man love it

  • My favorite song since i was 6

  • My dad and I always fought growing up. I
