Great song, it is so true. My four year old asked me the other day, "Why do I have to work all the time." I told him that it's for all the things that we have, house, cars, toys, the vacations we take, etc. But later that evening when I got home I realized that all he wants is to spend time with me. I have since cut back the number of hours that I am at work past my expected 40. My son needs me, and more importantly I need him.
My boys had a wonderful father he had to work like that to make the money to give them all the things they wanted and pay for the big house etc. He is a hard worker. Now both boys are like him big homes family, they have good jobs that require allot of work. You have to work when you can and you miss the good times it is life. Great video . thank you ;)
This is how my two boys grew up they had, horses, swimming pool, basketball court large house pool table room, motor bikes, cars, yet there dad was always working an engineer designer always at the office I felt sorry for them I kept them busy baseball, soccer, etc, still they would of like to have there dad home, now it repeats itself I saw my grandson outside alone the only child in this BIG house playing with his glove and baseball reminded me of this song.
growing up I used to listen to this song and swear to myself that I would never be that father, my dad was army special forces and was gone all the time and it sucked. and here I am 25 years old, 5 month old son, in the military, and if i am not working 12's i am in a foreign country so that he can have a good life when he grows up. not looking for sympathy, just sharing a story, cherish your moments when you have them.
You did a wonderful job depicting what Chapin was teaching. Yes teaching! Rather it be your child or anyone in your life you may receive back what you've done to others. I think the essence is what can happen when past meets the future. For every "action" there will always be a "reaction". Thank you for making a wonderful video. I appreciate you bringing Chapins words to life symbolically! If anyone cannot see this, by all means please purchase some glasses.
I used to sing this song to my son, used to be the only song that would put him to sleep! He is 5 now and loves the song himself, i put on a video of him singing his version of it with his guitar! Quite funny! Have a look for yourselves i titled it my boy and his version of cats in the cradle
This is the realest song I've ever heard of. My father always said it reminded him of his father. My grandfather passed away a fear years ago.. I'm still young, and If I ever let my relationship get like this with my father, I'd die.. It makes me tear up just thinking about it..
Your interpretation and transition are just perfect for this song. It's my first viewing & I'm sharing it on FB in honor of Harry Chapin's birthday. Thank you for a fine piece of art.
i cry everytime i hear this song because it pretty sums up my relationship with my dad. because the economy sucks he works alot more, waking up at 5 and going to bed around midnight. he spends any free time he can with me and my brother and sister. no matter what. but those are only a few hours on friday and saturday night. he is my idol.
A kid showed up just the other day. I dont know how but it was kinda cool,There was stuff to do so I got really busy, and when he grew up he was all pissed off he said I dont want to be like you dad and I sure dont want to live in a cave.
Great song, a definite lesson on life for sons and fathers. My father can't listen to this song in front of me because of the relationship with his father. He didn't want to have it like that, he was Army, so was gone a lot. He didn't let it happen though, he worked hard when he was home to ensure we had a good relationship. I now have a son, and sometimes my work in the military eats up a lot of time. When I deployed it was especially true... After deployment, I make sure I am home ASAP.
For true... The last time my dad and I were out shooting, this song was on the radio on the way home. The day before my parents moved acrossed the country.
alot of girls around the world say that the main man in their life is there hubby, bf, fiance but this isnt always true and guys will say that the main man in there life is their child or also hubby, bf, fiance but i say this is false yes there are some of you who grew up without a father figure around but alot of us also had one there, so in other words the main man in mylife is my father and to those which say this is gay..this isnt true, it's called father to son love
wow u did a rlly great job i always think bout my dad wen i hears this i think about wen im older and that he might not be around much longer this song makes u think wich not a whole lot of songs do any more so great job on the video
Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon." / Said the old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants." / "I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry." / The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems / Grown-ups don't pay attention to me." / And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand. / "I know what you mean," said the little old man.
Everyday when I come home from work, the first thing I think about is playing with my 11 year old son who can't speak (due to autism). But I can tell he's a happy boy that likes to smile and play, and wants somebody to play with. It would kill me to go through what the man in this video speaks of going through. I wish my son would stay young forever.
@Calcium1857 I AM UTISTIC AND I CANT SPEAK BUT OTHER THAN THAT I AM OK I LOVE THIS SONG AND I AM SO GLAD YOUR NOT LIKE SOME PARENTS THAT ARE ASHAMED OF THER CHILDREN BEING THAT WAY!!!!!!
i dont know why your getting all these haters all of the sudden, i first watched this video 2 years ago and i havent watched it in a while but you did a wonderful job and i love your explanation with the pictures and clocks and such, very good job and i love this song/video :)
You were 14 when you created it. I think you did a great job and it was insightful from a 14 year old's perspective. I remember when this song came out. I thought about my Dad and me and how this song paralleled my own life. It's the cycle of life. All of these years have passed and my two sons are grown. Although, we are still tight, I am experiencing the drift between us. They now have their lives to live with their families. So goes, the cycle of life. Again, good job.
I want to say that you can definitely see the meanings of life and the appreciation thereof. Reading the description you wrote definitely made sense in my eyes, not sure of the others who've posted on here. I lost my dad last year to cancer but it was with that moment how I finally realized how cruel time can be. Time, unlike money is only given to us once in our lives. We can't earn it or replenish it ever. I've learned to be careful on how I spend it.
WOW! This has always been a fav song of mine , I have a work aholic father. I never saw him growing up. This is so awesome! It gave me goosebumps. I cried. Thank you for your vid. To hell with the assholes that don't get it and dislike this vid. they are numb-shits!
@MalcolmHeardSB You think it is so bad then you make a better one with the same equipment, amount of money AND knowledge of a 14 yr old. You know you can't, so instead you bitch about other people's artistic work. What a sleeze! Get a life!!!
@MalcolmHeardSB Being posted in 2008, at the time, YouTube had two settings. Standard and 'High-Quality'. High-Quality became 360p, before they came out with HD. So I never called it High-def. High-Quality and High-def are two completely different things. HQ is just outdated.
Cat's in the Cradle is one of my fav songs from my early childhood & still love it as a adult. Love this song for it's songwriting with meaning. The video is great . thanks for posting this 70's classic !
I think you did a wonderful job with this! I liked your billy joel one too! the "we didn't start the fire". You have some real talent here! I hope you will cultivate it! You never know...Blessings! and much luck to you!
ACCORDING TO VH-1, this song was written as a result of his wife's EX-BOYFRIEND'S experience. Chapman did NOT experience this and it is NOT, at all, symbolic. It is taken from REAL ACCOUNTS. Her ex. LIVED this song.
the most epic song in history hands down dont hate haters this shit is my happy place everyone listen to this song again and again i mean it do it now or get owned by a speeding bus seriously
My dad just passed away, and I inherited his knifemaking shop. My biggest regret was simply being too busy with my life to really and truly appreciate how skillful he was until I was cleaning out and packing up the stuff, and I was able to see his genius at each level of construction of a knife, along with his design of custom tooling and benches. I hope I can honor his skill with my own, but I have a lot to learn. In the meantime, I have to figure out how to get this song out of my head!
@Ranieri069 The park is showed the first time he sings the verse, which is shortly after the kid is born. Afterwards, he says "My son turned 10 just the other day". So they wouldn't be older men by then. The second time he sings it, it shows a baseball park, and shortly afterwards, it mentions him off to college...another middle ground. The 3rd time he says it, it shows a city. Each time he says the verse, it gets more mature for the kid is getting older...the final time it shows an empty house.
@bejentlebekind I was 14 when I made it, as I explain in the description. And I also know of this deeper meaning and intergraded it in the best way I could at the time...which is again...explained in the description. Trust me I am well aware of the song's meaning.
This song is the theme of my generation. I was a kid who grew up in the 70s and our fathers were hard workers. I would not have wanted it any different. Our dads my have worked long hours, but they taught us great values and our moms were home. I know that many kids would have wanted it the way we had it. We were damn lucky to live when we did. Thanks, Dad. I miss you.
This was really nice. The symbolism was subtle and beautiful. I think we are so used to being hammered with stuff with traditional music vids we see that something that is simple gets lost in translation.
seems like you put a lot of time and thought into this video. It is pretty good i really like it. It is much better than what i can do. nice explanation also, i read it obviously, I didnt even notice the meaning behind the song or video. this helped a lot to increase my understanding of the video. Good luck. and once again thank you. Jon Brandon Rancman
I actually decided to read your meaning behind it, definitely so much thought put into this video. I use to have this video Favorited on a older account. I never really read your meaning or thought process of the video until today, and it makes a lot of sense, Almost to much for how old I would think you are. To those who haven't read his meaning behind it, make sure you look. Just read it while your watching/listening. It's actually quite brilliant. Great job, great video, and great mind. A++.
@hope11ification Ehh what are you trying to say?I shouldn't force my opinion on others?I created Lost?I'm an "egotistical bully liar" for trying to be a better person?
Haha I just read theRakin2008's explanation! If you have to write a fucking essay over the symbolic meaning of what your symbolic meaning for this song, I think you failed. F- BITCH!
Very nice! You have a sharp mind and probably a lot of patience, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I can't understand why anyone would leave anything less than a positive comment. Ignore them if they don't offer constructive input to you!
Awesome job, really put life into perspective!!!

Why is there a playground when "we'll get together then" is said?
Ranieri069 8 months ago
@Ranieri069 because that's where dads take their young kids to play?
garyconyers 7 months ago
@garyconyers i guess your right, but by then would they both be older men. they wouldnt want to play on the playground then, would they?
Ranieri069 7 months ago

I miss you.

i like this video becauseof how simple it is
lukeminecraft1 8 months ago

Very nice! You have a sharp mind and probably a lot of patience, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I can't understand why anyone would leave anything less than a positive comment. Ignore them if they don't offer constructive input to you!
