  • Where is this clip from?

  • To be honest it looks pretty straight forward.

A mechanical flower that drops its petals and leaves.

  • Without doubt my favourite illusion in all the world.

  • What is this from?

  • I know EXACTLY how this trick is done! v

Teller sold his soul to the Devil (Penn) for powers over shadows and darkness. Of course when making deals with the Devil you usually get the raw end of the deal which is why he must constantly do Penn's evil bidding and is not allowed to speak.

  • @MiNdFrEaK1292 Teller has been doing it since he was five you "faggot"....And Teller is a lot more famous than Criss Angel. Penn & Teller are international! They have the longest and best running magic show in Vegas, and have been together for 35 years or so! You can like Criss Angel all you want, but do not insult such a great magician who has been in magic for a heck of a lot longer than Criss Angel has, and who actually possess more talent than Criss ever will. Could you ever do this? No.

  • @thesophster1231 hahaha.. some was saying Angel was better than Penn & Teller!? That is funny. I bet if you as Chris Angel he would laugh at the mere suggestion. Teller is simply a genius and one of the best magical minds of all time. Chris is a great magician and performer, but really, lets be serious.

  • @no2religions I know! Anybody in the right mind would say that Teller is the better magician! He truly is. I think Teller is one of the best magicians around, along with Derren Brown. Yes Criss is a magician, and knows a lot more about magic than I will, but he is nothing compared to Teller. It's the truth. By the way, liking your youtube name :D

  • @thesophster1231 I love Derren Brown. His stuff on skepticism is great. You can find a great conversation between him and Richard Dawkins on here youtube.

And if you like my user name, you will love my movies. Friend and sub me! :) It would be the SOPHisticated thing to do.

  • @no2religions Well you can't spell sophisticated without Sophi now can you ;). I'll be sure to find the interviews. Another great man is James Randi. Such an amazing man! I will also be sure to friend and sub.

  • @thesophster1231 James Randi is totally awesome, and mentor of penn and teller. you can see them all talking on a video from "the amazing meeting". Randi also gives great talks about homeopathy.

How come you don't have any videos, sophi? Do your own version of shadows.

  • @no2religions Haha, I'm not that much of a magician. Couple of tricks but nothing much XD If only :) If there was god, I would love God to be just like Randi! He is amazing. I'll make a video one day. Haha, me failing at either a trick, guitar or keyboard. :)

  • @thesophster1231 I've figured out a "Shadows" method that doesn't use strings. There is no visible setup. You want it? Give it a go! I haven't done it or anything, but you'll know right away it's better than any other attempt on youtube!

Do tricks, there are fewer trick videos than there are mediocre music videos.

  • @no2religions Sure message me. Is it a method using heat or something? There are very many theories. But to be honest, I'd rather have Teller keep his amazing shadow trick. It's his trick. And he does it beautifully. Poetic, beautiful but eerie. He's the real magician, and I am doing my hardest to save up and see Penn and Teller live. Ever since I was little, I've always wanted to see the duo live. As well as Derren Brown. I'm sure I can do a few of my old tricks.

  • @no2religions Chriss Angel is a douch bag

  • I am pretty sure I know how this is done. No tape, no strings, no fishing line, no helpers.

  • what's this clip actually from???

I love penn & teller, especially teller

they inspired me to learn magic (still a teenager :P)

  • Is it possible that he has back stage hands pulling the leaves of and the shadow move when it moves and teller isn't doing anything to the plant then with some carful timing he can pretend he is effecting it with the knife

  • @acdchiway2hell i think that too

  • by the way if you really want to hear teller speak search here for the clip called & teller and &teller 2 . it is 2 part short film where teller is the only person to speak . it is him speaking as i have seen a clip from one of the amazing meetings where he has the same voice .

  • how is this done

  • I really want a side view of this trick.

  • @stansberry2295 I really don't think it would matter... well, you might see him load the fake blood, but that's it.

  • Jesus Jason Alexander is a pussy.

  • @Steelsheen11b Srsly. What a tool.

  • Following P & T for 20 + yrs. This trick never fails to amaze!

  • That's so beautiful. I had tears in my eyes.

I'm actually falling in love with Teller. There's something about the subtle, silent and mysterious types.

  • I'm 21 and I have the hots for this guy like no other.

  • @kurukururock im two years younger than you and i also do aswell :)

  • "He was a rather melodramatic teenager..."

  • Just got back from Vegas, and I saw their shoe live!! So amazing this trick always gets me and they then pegged it out of the theatre and I thought they had escaped to their rooms but then I saw them stood waiting!! Teller spoke to me, Penn called me Boss and I got a picture and autograph from both of them!!!!!

  • Who invented Shadows?

  • oh god Jason Alexander, you cried? Come on.

  • I've never been more impressed with a live show in my entire life. After the performance ends they run out of the theater and I literally sprinted after them in hopes to catch up. To my surprise, they wait at the door and literally thank their fans. Penn shook my hand and called me "boss". :D

  • kata

  • As someone who simply appreciates magic for the art, this is one of the most beautiful pieces of magic I've ever seen.

  • The shadow is the flower's shadow so what the magician has to do is remotely make the flower's pedals/leaves fall and the shadow follows. This is done using invisible magician's thread that goes from the wall, to the floor to the flower. The flower pedals/leaves are slightly weighted to overcome the resistance of the thread. When a leaf only slightly drops, there are two threads attached to it with one thread having slack in it to take over when the other thread is cut.

  • @kor1867 how did he move around the plant without exposing these threads?

  • @narutofan9tf A very small tube on the floor goes from the shadow wall to the table. This tube's covered with tape that matches the color of the floor so it's invisible to the viewers. Invisible threads goes from the shadow flower pieces, down to the floor, through the tube and up the base of the table to the flower. The flower's pedals/leaves are weighted so they will fall and the vase is stuck to the table for stability.

  • @kor1867

    If you say so

  • @kor1867 Your explanation doesn't actually make much sense lol

  • i saw them live in vegas and got their autographs after the show and teller talked to people afterwards

  • that is soo stupid theres another guy behind that white screen u can notice from the begining the knives shadow becomes 2 wtf!!

  • @griderable then who's cutting the real rose?

  • @cheese9595 duude that either can be a hidden thread pulling against the screen or it has self timing system didnt see therre were no audience but still penn and teller are good

  • am i the only one that noticed what the last flower peddle did at 1:26 ?

  • @deadInf3rno I didn't see anything, would you mind sharing?

  • I'm sure if it were that simple that Penn wouldn't be saying 'You'll never figure it out", or else he'd look a right twat

  • @TheWilbz thats the point, thats why he WOULD say that. because its so simple that your mind wouldnt accept it. you would be looking for elaborate technical solutions, holograms, nanites, etc but not going to the really simple. thats what magic is. fooling your brain into thinking those normal everyday actions, things which are always true all the time are true this time too. your brain looks for complex solutions so it doesnt have to rethink all of its preconceived notions of reality.

  • @tuseroni Good point, the misdirection from the simple trick is probably the most elaborate part.

  • Anyone know where I can find a video of Teller's other shadow trick? The one with the Unicorn song?

  • thanks

  • He hasn't changed a bit.

  • Not to sound pretentious or anything, but for those of you saying the trick is obvious, I don't think you understand the point of the illusion.

  • this trick was very obvious to me as soon as I saw it.

  • @TheOrnt Shut the fuck up, you're trolling all the P&E videos, get out

  • @DaProtagonist

no troll simply: obvious trick is obvious

  • @TheOrnt how does he do the trick, i would like to know, please reply

  • @lbcob

if you must know he uses a thread in the other hand to drag the weak leaves off...

the thread is so thin that you can't see the shadow.

Look at his hand, you can clearly see it

  • @TheOrnt what about his hand. It isn't dripping blood when he first cuts it but then when he puts in on the screen then all of the sudden it's like full blood flow. And I don't really see his hand figiting with the threads.

  • If you ask me the shadow is real... it is just that the plant is being pulled apart by invisible wires.

  • @DLPBurke That sounds right to me.

  • If I ever had a terminal disease and got to make a wish, I would wish to be told how this is done by Teller himself. I cannot get over this.

  • I'm in love with Teller.

  • @ephemeralprotagonist hes such a good listener

  • @ephemeralprotagonist Yes me to :)

  • yes, teller can speak. Watch the movie "Penn & Teller Get Killed" (if you can find it anywhere) teller actually rambles for a good while at the end.

  • @mazteer01 Just spotted the DVD release on Amazon.

  • @mazteer01 or google 'teller speaks in egypt'

  • @mazteer01 Or at "The Amazing Meeting," when he suddenly interrupts Penn to answer an audience question.

  • @mazteer01: Penn and Teller also guest starred on an episode of the Simpsons and he spoke through the animated depiction of himself.

  • @MyPersonalVendetta They guest starred twice actually.

  • @LazyEyes422 when he first started preforming this, he originally wanted a thorn to cut him from the rose (to by symbolic) but the problem was that not many people caught on to that. So he started cutting himself of the knife which is picked up on more. He does hope to one day be able to go back to the thorn (all this I got from an interview I read with him)

  • Uhmm... What's with the random Criss Angel hate? Besides he's an ILLUSIONIST not really a magician in the sense of the word if you think about it.

  • Teller actually gives a really interesting lecture on magic somewhere on youtube.

  • damn... Teller looked exactly the same!!

  • Look how he hesitates and watches for signs that the wax is melting. A studio light is very hot, so you're sure the wax will melt. He probably has some motion rehearsed for when things go in the wrong order or together.

  • @riparianlife97701 that would be logical, but it can't be the explanation. Reason being is that Teller use to preform this with those child's spelling blocks and with voodoo dolls...so wax wouldn't apply. I'm not saying I know how it's done, I'm just saying that wax isn't very likely.

  • if wires were directly attached to each specific joint and pulled, there runs a risk of moving the entire plant. but if wires are tightly looped around the tip of the joint closest to the stem and also attached to the stem itself just under the loop, then tightened, the pieces fall while the wires/loops remain hidden and the plant does not move. and the darkness and the viewing distance away from the stage certainly plays a huge factor, i'm sure.

  • The point is...its Tellers wonderful imagination that made this trick so beautiful.

OK its not hard to figure out how its done...but Teller performs it and invented it...

    What a guy !!

  • what is the name of this show or episode?

  • @NoFearNoFlame A doco about P&T called 'Bravo Profiles'

  • George is a pussy

  • I would not want to know how this is done, it would take away the buety of the illusion.

  • how in the hell did he do that

  • HOW IS IT DONE?!?!?!

  • why does teller look like a girl in 0:11?

  • Amazing.

  • umm... why are people laughing at something so perfect?

  • @papermermaid Because there astounded by the illusion, plus they laugh when he acts as though he has been cut, which he intended to be funny

  • @lewrites laughter is often a reaction to surprise.

  • @lewrites Teller acted in a way that the audience found humorous.

  • Very simple trick.

  • @Shelter1284 yeah, but these guys are notorious for making thing way more difficult than they have to be. im sure it can be done with something as simple as string but is more complicated than building a fake rose out of petrifyed peices of real roses.

  • amazing... the effect, the performance, no wonder teller became silence in his performances after he made this trick( that's what the narrator said, teller made the shadow trick)

  • Simply beautiful.

  • I think that's the most beautiful trick I've ever seen. Pure visual poetry.

  • Someone else mentioned this and it's true - Teller's movements don't perfectly match his shadow sometimes.

  • Totally amazing. Totally beautiful

  • penn and teller dont hate angel either. i dont know where this is all coming from. pretty much all the headlining magicians in vegas all know and like each other. penn had mac king and lance burton on his radio show. he also told stories about him and angel and about the amazing randi

  • @ashburn247 yeah, penn interviewed him and he didnt sound like he had a problem

  • saw them friday night! This trick is amazing up close!

  • @LazyEyes422 not real blood, illusion :P prob just a blood capsule

  • Wax is holding the leaves and petals on. That's the reason for the very bright light. It melts the wax. The magician watches for a petal or leaf to start sagging, then aims for that petal or leaf's shadow with the knife. It would take lots of practice to apply the wax right, and to get the timing down.

  • @riparianlife97701 Too complicated. The trick has to be performed live many times, and without a single failure. Magicians prevent random chance from interfering whenever possible.

  • It is beautiful ....its simplicity makes it awsome!!!!

  • I think it's simple. The petals are remote controlled. But I could definitely be wrong. Saying that the petals simply aren't living is disappointing.

  • One of my favorites. I remember watching this a long time ago. Very interesting and beautiful performance.

  • Can someone please post a video of teller just performing the trick please?

  • AWESOME!!! I'm going to see P & T in Las Vegas next week!!! I'm going to get a deck of Bicycles signed by them.....

P.S. I GET TO FUCKING MEET THEM!!!!!!!

  • That would be a good explanation, if it weren't for the fact he cuts the flowers in the same order each time he performs the illusion. But, it is better than any explanation I can come up with.

  • What you do is put a small amount of wax on the first leaf, a little more on the second leaf, and still more on the petals. That way, they'll fall in a pretty predictable order.

  • @rlrsk8r1 -- Then comes the problem of the petals abruptly falling off too soon.

Personally, I think it's done with a lot of piano wire or fishing line, considering he's got a knife up there, but this is just me speculating.

  • ugh now i wana know how its done

  • I gotta say that I love penn and teller for showing off the every day tricks that everyone knows and proving to them that they are simple easy tricks and then turning it around and pulling out their own self created tricks which they refuse to provide information for. All in all it just seems so cool. and it's gonna drive younger magicians to create more interesting tricks which will cause the entertaining factor of magic to live on for many more years.

  • Teller doesn't talk.

  • can he talk in real life when he is not acting?

  • Yes. I heard him say in an interview that early in his magic career when heckled he said nothing which soon shut them up. He just extended this to his whole performance. Also chances are with a partner like Penn he wouldn't get a word in anyway. :-D

  • @s043487263 I SAW THIS LIVE AT THE SHOW IN VEGAS LOVE THIS ONE!!!!

  • @s043487263 He meets with the audience after the show and talks to them.

  • @s043487263 I think there's a video somewhere here where he holding a lecture.

  • @s043487263 -- I saw them live in Philadelphia once. I'd never seen Teller talk. Imagine my surprise when I got to meet and greet them off stage, and he spoke! He only won't speak when on camera/stage/performing.

  • @mddawson1 Yes he can and does.

  • @mddawson1 he does in real life

  • @mddawson1 i saw them live in vegas once and after the show i talked to them and teller does actually talk. its just part of the act. :)

  • teller is the one that doesnt talk. they should of had eachothers names

  • @elvisrocker97 Teller is his real surname!

Plus, he does talk, only not when performing!

  • Teller's really interesting. He knows a lot about psychology of magic and even built his house with trick mirrors and other props built in to fool visitors.

  • brilliant trick, i'd choose penn and teller over criss angel anyday alot of criss angels tricks have been done in some way by older magicians anyway

  • plus majority of them are pre arranged and camera tricks

  • @SCIPghosthunters and lots of actors!

  • At some of the guys below me..

Chris Angel is a publicity stunter who has tricks that have been exposed multiple times on T.V.

Teller is probably the greatest magician since Houdini.

  • how the hell is this dun

  • @jonathanr345

Ok, we know that the shadow of the rose is not really the shadow of the rose we can see in front. The clue is in the fact that Teller's movements don't exactly match the shadow's movements - so that's not his shadow either.

  • the shadow is real since the shadow of the leafs matches perfectly the question is what makes the actuall rose fall apart?

  • Dreamer, look more closely and you'll see the shape of the actual flower is wrong at the top. There's a shadow petal sticking up that isn't there on the real one.

Indeed, I'm nowhere near as clever as Teller so I don't know how he makes it fall apart.

  • actually i already saw that and the light is coming from an angle below the top flower so it makes it look too wide

  • @queenastilon That would make the performance FAR too complicated. Tricks are always simple.

  • Comment removed

  • Chris Angel is a pussy who steals tricks from more talented magicians and does them wearing skinny jeans and eyeliner so emo girls think he's their Sexy Lord Satan.

I've heard Angel went off on an amateur magician calling him a fake and accusing him of not really being able to do magic. I think he's flipped his wig.

  • @olddeuteronomy

Just a dude making a living. There are a lot of different styles of magician out there.

  • @olddeuteronomy, I hate Criss as much as the next guy, but he, and Houdini, and Penn and Teller and many other magicians have spoke out and went after fake psychic's who deceive people when they are most vulnerable. Criss's dad had just died, I believe and this guy was claiming he could talk to the dead. Criss, knowing he was a con artist, knowing his methods, could not tolerate deception being used in that way. Most magicians can't.

  • @absurdaztec2 i agree with this guy

  • he walked on glass they arent cowards their realistic

  • Chris Angel is a douchebag

  • @Dreamerx47 you're a douchebag.

  • @Dreamerx47 I saw a magician at my high school during lunch

he was in town cuz his friened had died

apparently he works along side someone who works with chris angel

i gotta say he was a far better entertainer and illusionist

  • @Dreamerx47

    no...

    he's just a mindfreak

  • FUCK!

  • It's a trick, an illusion, everybody knows that, that ain't bullshit jackass.

  • way to generalize a species of animals #1, and #2, way to generalize a species of animals with another animal as a metaphor.

  • this is bullshit.

  • @blacksabbathgnr098

Does it make you feel more like a man that you are utterly incapable of being moved by beauty?

  • 0:40 - amazing

  • Basically yeah, lol

  • Lol listen to 0:28-0:32

    Thank you mr. Obvious

  • wow that picture of teller as young with the knife.... he looks fucking psycho....

  • I know how it's done. Wax. The flower is put together with wax, and the bright light that casts the shadow melts the wax. If you're consistent in how you apply the wax, you know in what order the pieces will fall.

  • there's another video where the guy blows on the shadow and the flower moves consistent with his blowing. how's that done?

  • and every time you do it somewhere else, under a different lightbulb, or just the slightest difference in wax, you are going to have different melting points. nice try though.
