I'm seeing her sing Romeo from I Capuleti e i Montecchi in a few months time. I am indescribably excited!!!!!!!! Tickets cost me an arm and a leg, but it's going to be so worth it!!!
Very interesting to hear her moving interpretation of this aria in French. I have her cd recording in Italian, and if I may slightly prefer that one, it is due to her highly original and wonderful subito piano conclusion that chills my spine,
I can't say anything about her French, since Iäm Swedish myself, but Kasarova sure can act! I saw her for the first time in "Der Rosenkavalier" as Octavian, and I've loved her voice ever since. A very good mezzo, using a "darker" shade to her voice when needed but still being able to sing the high notes without any strain. Would love to see her live.
One of the things I really like about her is that you don't even have to look at her, you understand the pain/joys in her voice anyway!
She is amazing! and particularly in live performances she is unbelievable, everyone should hear the power of that voice. There so few singers nowadays who deliver such performances and who could be heard in large halls!
It's a great rendition indeed, but I wouldn't compare Vassalina to Ferrier. Ferrier, one of the greatest singers of all time, had an incredibly dark contralto tone which suggested masculinity, while Queen Kasarova has a lovely, lighter mezzo timbre nonetheless endowed with a rich chest register. Although Kasarova's Orfeo couldn't be more moving with her incredible acting, Ferrier's dark version makes your blood freeze in your veine when expressing the desair of the beloved one : "unequalled".

@LjubljanaSI Did you understand yourself what you wrote and recommend primitive people like yourself?! A WOMAN with a deformed face from supposedly beautitul, divine singing which charmed all people and nature with forced, ugly low notes pretending that she is a MAN, is "THE MOST CONVINCING ORFEO"?! I've seen many stupid comments on YT, but yours surprised even me! LOL Do you know what the myth is about? For God's sake leave Orfeo to countertenors and forget about this TRAVESTY! Kowalski please!
@serenaluce What childish comments you post! So you don't like Kasarova or other mezzos singing pant roles, so don't watch or listen to them. Why is this need to go around calling other people names just because they enjoy it - and even engaging in ad hominem attacks of singers just because you prefer other performers? Since when must everyone conform to your preferences instead of their owns?
btw Gluck didn't write Orfeo for countertenor. The French opera generally didn't use that voice type.

@AnatoleBelge What childish comments YOU post! I discovered Kazarova by chance, was so gusted by her ugly low singing and deformed face. I thought perhaps it was only ONE video, she wasn't fit or ill and I should listen to her more to draw my conclusions before posting any negative comments about her. But the more I listened the more I'm disgusted by her as an artist! Perhaps you don't command what I should listen and if I can express my opinion! Everybody is allowed to do it on YT,not only fans
@serenaluce And it is telling that others are able to express their opinions without going out of their way to insult and call everyone who enjoy the performers and the clips that they don't like names the way you do. What did LjubljanaSI say to deserved to be called "primitive" just because he enjoys this performance? You are the one assaulting others.
You seem a lost case of gender-obsession. Don't know why you even bother to listen to opera. It is about the musical drama and not the look.

@AnatoleBelge Are you Ljublyana's defender? If she is offended she can reply to me herself! Of course, it's only expressing personal opinions: SHE recommended this DVD with Kazarova as "the most convincing Orfeo", and I express MY OPINION that any WOMAN CAN'T be THE MOST CONVINCING MAN! It's YOU who make generalizations talking about me "assaulting others". Do you speak for the whole world? Who would talk about MUSICAL DRAMA?! It's a love story of a MAN and a WOMAN, not 3 girlfriends + Amore!!!

@AnatoleBelge How about using a bit of logic even in OPERA?! You have no logical arguments to reply to me why Kowalski isn't more convincing as ORFEO as CT in Gluck's Italian version, Gedda, Florez as tenor or Hvorostovsky as baritone in his French one?! It's YOU who is a lost case of gender-obsession if you are already so brainwashed that only a WOMAN with an ugly low voice can show a MAN! Anyway, let it be a woman but with a BEAUTIFUL voice like Callas, fon Stade, Baker, not this UGLINESS!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@AnatoleBelge By the way, his Italian version Gluck wrote for a CASTRATO who is a MAN! In the French version it is sung by a tenor or even a baritone who is a MAN too! Listen to e.g. Nicolai Gedda in this aria. Don't you think that he is more convincing in the role of ORFEO than this woman forcing as lowest notes as possible and always with a distorted face?! Don't be ridiculous! NO woman no matter how amazing vocally and act she is, can't express MALE SINGING! Then men should sing SIRENS! LOL

@AnatoleBelge Also such female singers in any repertoire with ugly low voices , awful grimaces and monkey manners ON STAGE (I don't care what they are as persons, I never insult them personally!) like Bartoli, Genaux, Prina and Kazarova are a shame and profanation of modern opera and a sign of degradation of our world!

@LjubljanaSI Though Kowalski isn't the best Orfeo possible, but he is stunning without any ugly, deformed female face at which it's even painful to look! And he sounds MANLY! Only MALE SINGING can express how Orfeo could sound! At least he has a recorded DVD which I have and recommend. Also, is it your idea too as Kazarova's that to show a man a female singer has to sing as low as possible and make ugly grimaces?! Why do you hate men so much?! Real men are not that ugly! LOL Orfeo either! LOL
Yes, Orpheus lived in Rhodope mountain of Thrace in nowarday Bulgaria according to mythology. As Resa Koleva, Kasarova's voice tutor says in the documentary about this aria the main point here is that Orpheus is ready to go to the underworld to reunite with his beloved Euridice. It is a tremendous feeling, you cannot sing it flatly as if nothing has happened.
It is so hard to make an over famous aria sound fresh. I really think she is great. She has the extra dimension of acting and emotion not just notes. Anyone love the Callas version?
I do love the Callas version. Quite different from Kasarova's (I think I like her studio recording of the Italian version better, but then one can't compare studio recorded stuff with live staged performance), but equally drives Orphee's heartache home. The weirdness in their voice seem to serve these kind of expressive music well!
No. I think that Orpheus, especially in the Berlioz version, sounds better when sung by a mezzo. Especially such a brilliant one like Vesselina Kasarova.
had the music been written in the tenor range, then perhaps I'd entertain the idea of Eurydice being sung by a man. It's common knowledge that the Berlioz version of this opera was written for a contralto orphee!
I am having some problems with pronounciation here but this is a beautiful interpration, moving, very sensitive... Fortunately French are not limited to "giloubreizh", rude and vulgar indeed.
There isn't a dry eye in the house! She is most definitely banned from within an ear shot of my garden... Spent too much money on those trees to allow them to uproot themselves to run after her Orpheus! ;o)
Yeah. This singing will melt you, thaw you, turn you into a poodle of pure rapture, envelop your brain in almost narcotic mist, thick and sweet like honey. I feel as if I am some strawberry ice-cream melting in the sun.
