If you have a dedicated teacher with lineage to the respected arts founder, whom is teaching you "self defense" not ring fighting, there is a big difference, it most defnitely can work. Theres a video pertaining to Krav Maga floating around somewhere that takes one of the guys from human weapon, Jason Chambers I think his name is, and puts him in a real self defense curriculum. Might wanna check it out. Good luck.

Hapkido is a very dangerous martial art and is for real situations (they use groin strikes, eye pokes, small joint manipulations) and tkd as a marital art is learned by the korean military(not the sport) . Hwarangdo is literally a mixed martial art as it has one of the longest time periods to getting a black sash and its curriculum includes grappling, striking and weapons. Respect all who practice martial arts.
