I'm just beginning to discover Tom Waits, i've only heard a few songs, but he is fast becoming one of my favorite artists of all time, exactly for songs like this :) thanks for uploading it
another masterpiece from a master, I loved waits back in 1973, my friends all thought I lost my mind, maybe I did, but I still love waits today, he always is interesting in his work, bless mr. waits.
This song, and many other Tom Waits songs I feel could have become classic folk songs in the vein of Goodnight Irene, Stagolee, Midnight Special, etc. if they had been written earlier. This song especially, is such a great "redemption" song. In many ways Waits has always been a bit "past his time" in terms of his style (though ironically he IS also very covered by more "in vogue" artists). Great song, great artist and I hope I see him live sometime.
Can't thank you enough for posting this song. Have you seen any lyrics with all of what Tom sings? On all the ones I've read it's missing that little verse that Tom might've just slipped in there. Something about Charley Whitman and Dillinger's boots. I was just wondering If you had seen any with that verse included. Thanks again by the way.
this is an absolutely phenomenal vocal/piano performance by tom waits. i think he's almost crying at the very end. Give a listen to the last 10 seconds on blast with headphones, let me know what you think...
Wow, damn this is great. Been watching Tom Waits videos all night long, and this is beautiful. And I thought Johnny Cash's version was ridiculously awesome, but as they say, nothing beats the original.
Does anyone else find it ironic that the song is about going down to the train to be saved -- particularly where the train goes slow -- where hobos catch a free ride to run away from their troubles?
...perhaps I've read too far into this. In any case, this song is amazing.
I never thought I'd be able to worship to a Tom Waits song, but once again, the man has proved me wrong. The emotion and beauty that this song holds absolutely astounds me. So singing this in church. <3
This song has been my favourite Tom Waits song since the first time I heard it. Even by Tom Waits' extraordinary standard, I've always felt this song is something special.
@avianoandy I can and do sometimes. I've been a Waits fan since I was 16 back in 87, but I didn't realize until the last few years how incredibly prolific he is. Truly staggering. I STILL discover great songs occasionally. Youtube is such a gift for music fans. I never thought I would see much video of his live performances, but the stash available now is awesome. Not just a lyrical genius but a performance genius.
I've just heard Johnny Cash's version for the first time. As much respect as I have for him, Waits' cover is far superior and makes Cash's song sound downright cheerful by comparison.
Well, I'm pretty sure Wait's actually wrote the song first and played it but didn't record it. Then Cash covered it and recorded it. It wasn't until much later that Waits actually recorded it. Interesting song history haha. Both versions are pretty amazing.

The most beautiful song for the downtrodden and broken hearted...A masterpiece only Mr. Waits could pull off.

This is a stunning song about offensive grace. Forgiveness available to traitors, assassins, mobsters, and mass murderers.

@hrothgleas too true. I like that term a lot. "offensive grace".

@WolfKnifeLaserTorch8 So if you live in darkness and if you live in shame
All of the passengers will be treated the same
And old Humpty Jackson and Gyp the Blood will sing
And Charlie Whitman is holding on to Dillinger’s wings
They’re both down there by the train
Down there where the train goes slow

@flowingrain25 Thanks man. And after some searching i think there's one maybe two with this but it's pretty hard to find. I appreciate it though.

There's a place I know where the train goes slow
Where the sinner can be washed in the blood of the lamb
There's a river by the trestle down by sinner's grove
Down where the willow and the dogwood grow
You can hear the whistle, you can hear the bell
From the halls of heaven to the gates of hell
And there's room for the forsaken if you're there on time
You'll be washed of all your sins and all of your crimes
If you're down there by the train
Down there by the train

boredcrab2 2 years ago
Waits' version is a blue song. The blues would not exist without train imagery.
martini1179 2 years ago
nah, it'd just be like "down there by the steamboat" or "down there by the horse" or something.
definitely different though.
