  • no matter how far you fall, there's always a tom waits tune there to lie down next to ya

  • no, not many can sit and watch Tom all day long,,you must be mentally disturbed..be proud! i know i am!

  • "Ive never asked forgiveness.

    Ive wever said a prayer.

    Ive never given of myself

    and ive never truly cared.

and ive hurt the ones that loved me.

    and im still raising cane.

    Ive taken the low road

and if youve done the same...

meet me down there by the train..."

  • TOM is his own man and genre--I am so lucky to have found him 30 years ago--all styles into a new genre with tom---

  • "'im just beginning to discover Tom Waits, i've only heard a few songs"

oh yeah, i would like to be in thios situation again.

good luck my friend, theres a lot to explore and discover..

  • I'm just beginning to discover Tom Waits, i've only heard a few songs, but he is fast becoming one of my favorite artists of all time, exactly for songs like this :) thanks for uploading it

  • This is so real, sad and heartfelt. It does take you home.

  • It's a great song and interpretation. What's missing is a great videoclip. It deserves much better.

  • I've hurt the ones who love me, and I'm still raising cain. I've taken the low road, and if you've done the same.... meet me down there by the train.

The most beautiful song for the downtrodden and broken hearted...A masterpiece only Mr. Waits could pull off.

  • This one cuts the edge, its another level, there are no words to discrive, waits is now in the hall of fame..............far to late. God bless Tom.

  • i cried listening this song when miral ended.

  • Schnabel put this song at the end of Miral. Fantastic.

  • One person wasn't there on time.

  • This, I do believe, is my favourite Tom Waits song. It doesn't matter how I'm feeling, this always brings me back home.

  • This is a stunning song about offensive grace. Forgiveness available to traitors, assassins, mobsters, and mass murderers.

  • @hrothgleas too true. I like that term a lot. "offensive grace".

  • Love this song. One of my all time favourite T.W. songs. I want this played at my funeral - nothing else.

  • MarsVoltaKA, it's track 12 (I believe) on the "Bawlers" cd in the ORPHANS trilogy.

  • another masterpiece from a master, I loved waits back in 1973, my friends all thought I lost my mind, maybe I did, but I still love waits today, he always is interesting in his work, bless mr. waits.

  • is this song on any of his albums?

  • @MarsVoltaKA It's on the middle cd of the Orphans collection.

  • @Diotiman1 Track 16 I think

  • There are no words in the world to describe this song.. ♥

  • This song, and many other Tom Waits songs I feel could have become classic folk songs in the vein of Goodnight Irene, Stagolee, Midnight Special, etc. if they had been written earlier. This song especially, is such a great "redemption" song. In many ways Waits has always been a bit "past his time" in terms of his style (though ironically he IS also very covered by more "in vogue" artists). Great song, great artist and I hope I see him live sometime.

  • they finally nominated him for the rock and roll hall of fame

  • @flowingrain25 He's a stunning singer-songwriter, but not very rock and roll.

  • I actually cried, fuck

  • @NedimHusic You are not alone with that. ;)

  • Can't thank you enough for posting this song. Have you seen any lyrics with all of what Tom sings? On all the ones I've read it's missing that little verse that Tom might've just slipped in there. Something about Charley Whitman and Dillinger's boots. I was just wondering If you had seen any with that verse included. Thanks again by the way.

  • @WolfKnifeLaserTorch8 So if you live in darkness and if you live in shame

All of the passengers will be treated the same

And old Humpty Jackson and Gyp the Blood will sing

And Charlie Whitman is holding on to Dillinger’s wings

They’re both down there by the train

Down there where the train goes slow

  • @flowingrain25 Thanks man. And after some searching i think there's one maybe two with this but it's pretty hard to find. I appreciate it though.

  • @WolfKnifeLaserTorch8 no problem, glad to help. this song is absolutely amazing

  • this is an absolutely phenomenal vocal/piano performance by tom waits. i think he's almost crying at the very end. Give a listen to the last 10 seconds on blast with headphones, let me know what you think...

  • Wow, damn this is great. Been watching Tom Waits videos all night long, and this is beautiful. And I thought Johnny Cash's version was ridiculously awesome, but as they say, nothing beats the original.

  • The kind of rough-around-the-edges guy who probably would have ended up a disciple.

  • amen

  • Does anyone else find it ironic that the song is about going down to the train to be saved -- particularly where the train goes slow -- where hobos catch a free ride to run away from their troubles?

...perhaps I've read too far into this. In any case, this song is amazing.

  • Wonderful music, and more sound Christian doctrine than in a thousand megachurch sermons.

  • I never thought I'd be able to worship to a Tom Waits song, but once again, the man has proved me wrong. The emotion and beauty that this song holds absolutely astounds me. So singing this in church. <3

  • There's a place I know where the train goes slow

Where the sinner can be washed in the blood of the lamb

There's a river by the trestle down by sinner's grove

Down where the willow and the dogwood grow

You can hear the whistle, you can hear the bell

From the halls of heaven to the gates of hell

And there's room for the forsaken if you're there on time

You'll be washed of all your sins and all of your crimes

If you're down there by the train

    Down there by the train

  • I cannot bear the amount of love Tom must have within him. Total amazement.

  • what is it with Tom Waits and trains?

  • Waits' version is a blue song. The blues would not exist without train imagery.

  • nah, it'd just be like "down there by the steamboat" or "down there by the horse" or something.

    definitely different though.

  • This song has been my favourite Tom Waits song since the first time I heard it. Even by Tom Waits' extraordinary standard, I've always felt this song is something special.

  • Can anyone else sit and watch these Tom Waits videos all day long....

  • Why, yes, I can.

  • all i been doing for the past month

  • @avianoandy I can and do sometimes. I've been a Waits fan since I was 16 back in 87, but I didn't realize until the last few years how incredibly prolific he is. Truly staggering. I STILL discover great songs occasionally. Youtube is such a gift for music fans. I never thought I would see much video of his live performances, but the stash available now is awesome. Not just a lyrical genius but a performance genius.

  • @avianoandy

    I know I can

  • Tom waits is as Faulkner when i hear this and Cash is like... well... lesser... much lesser

  • Thank you so much for the upload.

  • Tom Waits was a heavy drinker.

  • IS a heavy drinker. He's not dead.

  • He WAS a heavy drinker because he hasn't drink since the 80's.

  • This is a case where the cover and the original are equally mind-blowing. Such incredible emotion and uniqueness in Waits and Cash's versions.

  • i like cash's version, but this is another level.. no words for this masterpiece...

  • I've just heard Johnny Cash's version for the first time. As much respect as I have for him, Waits' cover is far superior and makes Cash's song sound downright cheerful by comparison.

  • Well, I'm pretty sure Wait's actually wrote the song first and played it but didn't record it. Then Cash covered it and recorded it. It wasn't until much later that Waits actually recorded it. Interesting song history haha. Both versions are pretty amazing.

  • It's not a cover, Waits actually wrote this sing

  • @waits8 Dito!

  • @Speedfeuer ???meaning?

  • @waits8 means, i agree with your coment ^^

  • i had no idea that this was written by waits, ialways liked cash's version, now i know why

  • This is one of his songe you, sadly, dont hear too often.

  • luckily, we've this 'tube to try and right that wrong.

  • @Painmiracle MAybe you don't but I listen to it at least twice a week. Much love for Tom ♥

  • True lyrics for me...

  • rad man
