truck2112yes I think that you are 100% spot on with your interpretation of this great SD song! Your video is excellent and very professional. If SD were to view this video I think they would be very pleased with it. Thank you so much for posting it.
Why this song was left off Katie Lied or the Royal Scam is beyond me , it simply gorgeous...one of my favorites , I still love this band but they abandoned this kind of writing a long time ago !
Great work. I always took it that way too. Jackson, comfort, silver key opens red door... not a user, but seems a poetic description of the score to me as well.
Another great dark one from Donny and the boys. Like most of thier songs most characters seedy, lowdown and up to no good. But then again when you have band that named itself after a dildo only adds to the awsomeness!
this is such a great song...my theory is that this is all about going to a prostitute. Ruthie will give you the silver key to open the red door. It all comes out on the inside is a reference to having an orgasm in a condom.
It's about a place to stay for the night and indulge! It's a brothel with skinny girls available and behind the red door is where you'll find the drugs. I enjoyed the art in the video.
This is one of my favorites...I take it as a speakeasy/stripclub/brothel type of place, but yeah it's probably a drug reference. I got the same buzzkill when I saw the explanation of Time Out Of Mind.
I like Becker and Fagen am an East Coast kid, I've only been to California twice, both times were different, but beautiful experiences. Much of their music definitely feels like California to me.
very interesting interpretation through video, only Fagen and Becker really know what the song is about and whether it's purely fictional or based on some real life experiences. That's the beauty of it, everyone has a different interpretation, and different meaning with each individual listener. The lyrics certainly are visual, and you've provided us through your video illustration of your mental pictures from the song, nicely.
@vinstrumentals So I have been told...I decided on the drug route. The lyric "Ruthie will give you the silver key to open the red door" always seemed to me like a reference to IV drug use, possibly heroin. I may be wrong.
@truck2112yes I have a hard time that this song is about just one thing, most of the Steely Dan songs aren't so one dimensional, funnily enough, when ever people try to find one meaning, they never do, that's why so many people on the internet think it's "cryptic dark sarcasm". It's just good music, about bad people, horrible things, and misplaced optimism.
@vinstrumentals From what I understand, yes. But this is not just any brothel - but one in a Soviet country. And he's a spy, for the "Western World" looking for some love. Like most Soviet-era black markets, they only accept US Dollars (Your 'Jackson'.)
Wow. As a huge steely dan fan, you really put an amazing visual / imaginative trip to the song i love. With most Steely Dan songs there is an imaginative ride one goes on and finally someone did it on video. I especially loved the Breaking Bad scenes. Yes, where he was experiencing his first heroin trip. Love that show. Congrats on such a great video!!!
Heroin? What does a skinny girl mean? Just a skinny girl? Or is that slang for something.. this is before the brand of booze called skinny girl, right..
Do you think this song is Donald crying out? Asking questions like: Who are you? What are we doing here? Is he confused by all the debauchery of the Western World? The text and tone seem "minor" and not like he is celebrating...when was this written/recorded? I heard that by Gaucho they were both burned out and clinically depressed....I read it in a book on them I think...the guitar leads sound sad-so did Pete Townshend solos in 1979 and he was in trouble too...sad
@PJNARS - They were just so smart that they could see ahead of their time, I guess. Give a guy as educated and brilliant as Don or Walt a taste of the seventies and they will see things no one else can see. Steely Dan is the ultimate Philosophy/Etymology/Civics/Economics/World History PhD band. They could probably have told you what a credit default swap was before it was anything. Not that I know, but just saying, imagine how depressed that would make you...
All of Steely Dan's music is well composed unlike the digitized crap that people pass off as music today, talk about raw talent, simply unbelievable! Thanks for the post!
This song is just so amazing!! I love the storyline. It makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of it all! This song is so awesome!! Takes me back to better days. This song takes me back to days of true happiness and innocence. I miss those days. My heart just aches for those days. What a time that was! Never to be forgotten! There was a magic in the air back then that you just cant feel today and that is a real shame. This song is pure magic! Missing those days forever!! ♥♥

Well, now I don't have to visit Newport Beach (checking off list of places to visit)...isn't the internet great.!.I got a guided tour with featuring Steely Dan as entertainment.:)
To set the record straight this song was recorded during the Royal Scam sessions in '76 but not released until 1978 on the Greatest Hits album. The main reason I ever spin the greatest hits LP is to hear this song which is one of my favorites, but I have all the other LP's regardless, all great records to say the least.
please don't be antagonistic here........i'm surprised that this is from the "royal scam" sessions.....it sounds like it would have fit right onto "Katy Lied".......whatever. thanks for reading
I always assumed the song was about a whorehouse called "The Western World" and that all the action takes place after dark. The sunny images in the video don't fit with this picture. I may be wrong. Don and Walt, if asked, would probably just say something cryptic.
The pull of this song is irresistable; I'm energized with summer happiness, while I sing along to lyrics that tell the worst about society. Strange....kinda reminds me of the way the Beach Boys would blend the saddest lyrics with the most rediculously fun melodies: "...Well, Rhonda you caught my eye. And I can give you lotsa reasons why. You gotta help me Rhonda. Help me get her out of my heart." I'd love to hear this generation deliver something that brings to pass another summer sound.
@SpockOfRock Thats what I have been trying to convey to my fiends lately, as I have just recently discovered this tune. I have had no one with the exception of my older children that like this song. Its effin unbelievable.
It's a very relaxing and thought provoking song. Becker and Fagen frequently use cryptic language in their songwriting. For instance "Ruthie will give you the silver key, to open the red door...". Silver key = needle, Red door = vein. It's about heroin addiction, but you would never know that by just listening to the song.
Careful around Steely Dan fans though, SD fans tend to be (with few exceptions) very full of themselves... They tend to get all the facts right, but don't understand the spirit of anything they're hearing. A more defensive and rabid bunch you're unlikely to run into in the classic pop/rock/jazz category.
Needlessly insulting? Hmm... is there such a thing? Just askin'. See there are two versions of Steely Dan fans, the "pre-AJA fans" and the Jazzbo's. The jazzbo's don't like songs like "Don't Take Me Alive" and "FM" because songs like that might make your pulse rate go up a little bit. And then of course there's "Blues Beach", over which a civil war is still being fought. It's a whole long story dude, I don't have time...
Look... you've gotta choose a side here okay? This is a war, you can't be for both sides can you? Suppose George Washington was for both sides, would there even be a Kentucky Fried Chickens franchise right now? Well? Would there??? So here we go Candelise... Royal Scam or Aja? Choose.
@SpockOfRock We would most likely be better off without the Kentucky frachise for one thing. As for the Aja/Royal Scam choice: you listen to one, favour it over the other one, only to change your mind when you listen to that other one. Thus a pleasurable problem. What fun!
Let me see if I can help you Candelise. You see the proper response would be something like "Hey stupid Spock, this song was released in 1978... which was during the Aja period, not the Countdown To Ecstasy period you shmuck!".
@SpockOfRock I like the melody line, harmonics and lyrical style of Becker and Fagens' material. Therefore, whatever period of their recorded history makes little difference to me. These guys just write good songs, so the cheap grenades you are trying to ignite have no real effect here.
@SpockOfRock Well you obviously listened to the song ie music/lyrics otherwise you would not have a theory, would you? You are not a lone island of wisdom on this track, believe it or not.
You're wrong about that Candelise, I am a lone island of wisdom... Go ahead, ask me anything. Anything at all. Why I was telling this to my doctor at the V.A. hospital the other day, and I feel I nearly have her convinced. A couple of more sessions and she'll be ready to accept me as the creator. Okay maybe 3 more sessions, but she's gonna crack... no question, she'll crack soon. What were you saying again?
This is such a hidden gemstone for the Dan. The same for the WHO- " Put the money down"...sometimes, when your great, you throw out even great tunes bc you got so many.
@truck2112yes Yeah it first appeared on their 1978 GH album. Glad to see some old SD fans are still kickin' about. Not too many people know just how great some of their music IS and how much it influenced other musicians to follow.
@deBierce01 Why is everyone intent on attributing songs content to Heroin. There is an obvious similarity between the euphoric response from Heroin and any positive feelgood experience. Having said that, just let the eye of the beholder decide for itself, please.
they've got so many skillful songs.. lyrically and musically... you could never hear somebody like dylan getting this complex with the chord structures... yet it still flows seamlessly
I love this song from Steely Dan! When I listen to this song I almost feel like I am there with the people he is singing about. Such a great song with such a nice beat to it. This song has such an entrancing and mesmorizing feel to it. This and "Nineteen" are my absolute favorite songs from Steely Dan! I miss the days of this era when this song came out. I grew up on all this great music and miss those time so much. Never be a time like it again but at least we still have the music to listen to.
i miss those days too...even though i was just a kid. Check out the video response (nice one from GAUCHO)...I finally got that back up on an alternate account.
Truck -- Excellent job, superb. Captures the essence of the song. Maybe the only one thing that would make it more ideal would be a Florida setting rather than California. I'm influenced of course by "Katie Lies". But I always love it when someone "gets" Steely Dan. Good work, amigo.
@smffeb58 yes, wonderful track...fwiw i always thought it was"the sweetness you've been CRYIN for" , but obviously I may be wrong. wonderful track tho !
Whether you hate Fagen's sardonic vocal style or love it (I'm in the latter camp), there's nobody else who could capture the "attitude" of this great tune. Signature SD chord structures, superb craftsmanship. Love it.
Gosh. I don't know how they continued to compose such beautiful songs! Just wonderful!

Fagen and Becker both attribute a certain "guys without girls" ouevre to their work.
This song, like so many others of theirs is a cautionary tale.
Could be heroin, could be purchased affection standing in (poorly) for love and affection and acceptance.
That's the genius of what they do. er did....well you know what I mean.

@deBierce01 I bought Greatest hits when I was only 11 years old....loved them ever since.

@truck2112yes Yeah it first appeared on their 1978 GH album. Glad to see some old SD fans are still kickin' about. Not too many people know just how great some of their music IS and how much it influenced other musicians to follow.

@deBierce01 I have it on Steely Dan Gold, Expanded Edition (1985 i believe).

And it was about a whore house, not heroin.... Even though they have plenty of tunes about smack.
deBierce01 1 year ago
@deBierce01 Why is everyone intent on attributing songs content to Heroin. There is an obvious similarity between the euphoric response from Heroin and any positive feelgood experience. Having said that, just let the eye of the beholder decide for itself, please.
theivory1 1 year ago
@theivory1 well, music has always been an opiate.

@theivory1 Nice one, exactly!

As much as I like this montage, this a very New York City song.

Isn't it strange how certain music can make unknown places feel familiar, or even make you fall in love with someone you never met...

How's life treating you David? I Hope you are doing great, Steely Dan always great music.

they've got so many skillful songs.. lyrically and musically... you could never hear somebody like dylan getting this complex with the chord structures... yet it still flows seamlessly

Thanks....I used scenes from Newport Beach
because "The Lido" is supposedly about a restaurant there (several of the pics I used are murals from the restaurant)

I really like West Of Hollywood...I would make a video for that one, but I don't think the label allows any songs from Two Against Nature.
truck2112yes 2 years ago
For me there best song ever. I really like two against nature CD too. Tracks like janie Runaway And Almost Gothic are wonderful.

Dark and mellow...

Whether you hate Fagen's sardonic vocal style or love it (I'm in the latter camp), there's nobody else who could capture the "attitude" of this great tune. Signature SD chord structures, superb craftsmanship. Love it.

Both songs are on youtube...this is one of the few that is not. (I don't think much is allowed from GAUCHO to present)

Another from the hidden gold mine of Dan songs here on youtube. My vote for best Dan song not on an album is Mister Sam.

Insane song. Can't believe I just discovered this gem after being a Dan Fan since eighth grade (1971).

@ShantyO76 Its great, isn't it ? I always thought it kinda odd that this was my favourite track from the greatest hits lp, yet it wasn't on an album.
