I've seen pro level players storm very well against mutas. They'll mix in an archon or two so that sniping mutas get punished hard with splash damage. They'll refuse to commit and gradually nickle-and-dime the muta ball to death, until it's sufficiently weak that it can't engage the stalkers. Then they'll push out to force the mutas to engage and die.

I think storm is good for just keeping a HT at an expo (like what tod does) and archons are super good if muta/ling wants to stand and fight. But I deffinatly agree that storm is not a game changer vrs muta.

Blink stalkers, archon, storm are not the answer to mass mutas. As a rather high masters but not top yet, I agree with Psy. I either damage zerg severly before he can get his muta count high enough, or I go double stargate phoniex. A good zerg with 40+ muta will just rape any protoss on a decently open map. 2-3 cannons 1 archon 1 HT at each base cannot defend adequately. And I have to constantly move my blink stalker army just to fend off mutas. It get's impossible once up to 4th base.

I would disagree with you Psy, Archons are one of the best toss units. There is no real counter for them and they are just beefy and deal a good amount of damage. On the other hand I would agree with you about archons against mutas, Mutas are OP as it is against toss, especially when they is a huge murder of them. I don't care how many stalkers or Phoenix you have.

storm is good, used by a good player it can wreck your entire force. take this compesition, ling muta v stalker templar. if the templar could have got the storms down well they would have slaughtered the lings and then the stalkers would have cleaned the mutas. like so many things, it all depends on the calaber of the player

Storm/Archon with Zealots is all toss have against Muta/Ling. PsY said Storm is bad against Muta, but unless you go a Pheonix build before the Zerg goes Muta and out produce the Zerg in Pheonix', there is no other choice. Deezer went Blink, saw the Mutas and reacted with Storm, it's logical play. Ever wonder why Mutas are the current metagame right now against toss, because it's really fucking good against toss and counters robo, deathball builds pretty hard.

The only splash attack vs muta's are high templars or archons, I am a masters protoss player and you really need those units to fend vs mass muta. in my experiance... Evt. get plenty of cannons and at least a ht pr. expand when at late game vs muta ling... Good thing the Tempest will come :DDD

Unit test maps dont emulate terrain and micro. Sure they are best in STRAIGHT UP battle, but mutalisks, with perfect micro can kite them to infinity. But storms also rely a bit on bad control from opponent to catch his mutas off guard. But what else you are gonna use 0 energy HT anyway when the zerg is roaming in right?

You harass him with mutas + ling rubys to wear him down until he has no economy. Once he commits to a push, you run in and kill his base.

Scout the Spire morphing? Be passive and switch to 2 Stargate Phoenix production.

Mutas already spawned? Warp Stalker/Sentry and be agressive ASAP, throw 2 cannons each nexus.

Are they already inside your base? Be defensive and expo safely. Slow tech to HT/Archon.

Muta count is also important: Is he committing heavily, feel safe as he can't put gas in anything else. Is it only a handfull, scout for roach timing, upgrades on ground army, hidden expos

Storm is actually quite good at scaring mutas off too, and when they are heavily damaged by a couple of storm hits the Z won't even attack with them unless he wants to transition out, usually ending the muta harassment phase.
