Reminds me of two painful times in my life, glad they are over with now many years later. But this brings back the fresh feeling of a broken heart at having to let them go forever.OMG.Tears,guys,tears.
Compare the two versions of this song. Tim Moore's original is a great example of a beautiful song that needed to be sung by a professional singer/storyteller to make the emotion of this song come through. Tim Moore is bland of just recites the lyrics while Art Garfunkel sings like a broken man who has such pain and longing that the song becomes a performance.not to be missed.
I thank G-D Art Garfunkel did this version! No other hold a candle 2 the melodic symplicity he is able 2 create a timeless song!chacka69!!!Keep smilin thru
Great song! I just listened to Art's version right after Tim's version and while I like Art's and liked it when it was released, it seems more commercial and more produced than Tim's. Reminds me of the great Killing Me Softly debate between the original by Lori Lieberman and Roberta Flack. Flack's was a huge commercial hit but Lori, whose story it is, about seeing Don McLean perform is better to me because with less production is rendered far more intimate.
I like both versions, but it's clear that Garfunkel's was not a copy. The intro, the bridge, the ending--all different, original, and beautifully done. I've heard lots of copycat recordings and this is not one. I love all of Garfunkel's work--bought most off his records back in the day--his arrangements are superb.
My favorite Art Garfunkel song of all time -- his voice sounds almost haunting on the high notes -- and sorry, Tim Moore, but nobody else's version comes close to this one.
I'll go one further than stoicjello: I think Art's version is the consummate New York song...better than New York, New York,...New York State of Mind...Autumn in New York and all the rest.
Beautiful song, both versions are great but prefer Tim Moore's version because he wrote it. I admire song writers more than singers, Tim can do both. "Where I wrote I am you". Gives me chills, what a great line.
I have to admit that I like this version more, but only cause I heard it first so there's a sentimentality attatched to it. Tim's version is really quite good as well. Slightly different feel and not as airy as Art's, but excellent in its own right! I'm actually curious to listen to more or Moore!
Thank you so very much for posting this fabulous song that brings back such heartwarming memories. I haven't heard this song for a very long time. but it never fails to bring back memories of when I was a senior in high school in Marrietta, Pa. I remember laying in my bed and listening to this song over and over again on my trusty ole' turn table...feeling ever so safe with my mom and dad always near by. Both of my parents are gone now..but this great song lives on....Thank you again
Only heard this by Tim Moore back when it hit the airwaves. I can handle this . . . but I prefer Mr Moore's delivery. Tugs on the heart like Brian Wilson could do with God Only Knows.
@pmoyer50 I agree completely. No offense to Art, but the Tim Moore version has a lot more soul. It's available to listen on youtube, btw. Just search tim moore second avenue. (There are two versions, the stereo one is superior)
And while you are at it, you might also enjoy the original Funky Kings version of Slow Dancing, instead of the souless Johnny Rivers version. It's also available on youtube now. I swear they don't write music like that anymore.
thanks for posting this song, a really great song, brings me back in time, when the world was beautiful, can remember that look in her face, her eyes.
@zedboeing Yea, me too -. but she wasn't leaving me for the her flowers and her birds; it was the boyfriend she had left behind. And I was seeing her for the last time so I could buy those few household items she couldn't sell at the flea market. For what? So I could make it harder to forget her? What a sap!!I It was hard enough, I probably would have really gone off the deep if she had left for her flowers and her birds.

Even the liner notes on "Garfunkel" credit Moore as the writer. Perhaps you're thinking of "So Much in Love," which was written by Williams, Jackson and Straigis.

Tim Moore wrote Second Avenue. It was released as a single in October, 1974.
