I found a pigeon in my yard today, he had a tag on his foot with numbers and 2009 and I looked him up and it turned out to be a racing pigeon, I would like to get him back to his owner but idk how to find and contact him. also how much do you think the if found reward would be if there was one?

There will probably be no reward. I racing pigeon that cant make it home from a toss or a race is not a pigeon a racer wants in their loft, and will probably be culled.

How would the birds know how far to go? and how to return? also how do they know how far it traveled?

@cal31BRIAN23 They race pigeons by taking them all to a release point , usually 100 to 600 miles away although races of 1000 miles have been held. Every loft in the race is surveyed so the exact distance from the release point to each loft is known. When the birds return they are "clocked" in and the bird with the fastest speed is then calculated.
