Horrible! he wasn't in good health in this video..you can see it in his face he's noy having a good time, the Bb is tottally flat and forced! Watch Lima's version, is way better.
The facial expresions is a part of the acting, you fool.Unlike Pavarotti who was smilling even during the dramatic moments Domingo was a real actor. The high note was so easy for him that he hit it while he was walking.
The high note easy for Domingo? He goes phenomenally hoarse trying to hit it. Notes like that detract from the otherwise even delivery he offers. They wreck his legato line. A great shame.
I do actually agree with you with all you said. Domingo´s high registered is not as good as its meant out to be and he really suffers, not very good legato lines either and very insecure the hole aria. But He is a good actor, but that is not all.
just another little comment. I wonder what it is about Covent Garden that brings the best out in this man. He is rarely off in any recording that ive seen from there. His acting is always impeccable, he never overdoes it. Fair play to him!
In my opinion this is some of the finest tenor singing to be heard. Hearing Domingo here is like a bath of bronze sound with warm overtomes. This was a fine role for his unique voice.
Yes, I have. I've heard everyone sing this. Del Monaco is undisputed king of histrionics. I wish I could have heard him live, on recording the voice can be to much to handle. I also love the '76 Carreras recording, he isn't a spinto at all, but he leaves his mark.
Extremely decent interpretation for a tenor that still had not matured vocally into a total spinto (not even 10 during the 20th century achieved this level)

Saw most of these performances, but the revival the following year was even better, Bergonzi/Cruz-romo/Milnes/Grist.

Well, I suppose Domingo is also "acting" anguished in arias like "Amor ti vieta", "recondita armonia" and "Donna non vidi mai".
Seriously, everytime he has to sing a high note he looks like his head is going to explode no matter what the aria or scene is about.
