Didan1, since you were there, I am wondering: did the chorus drown out the counterpoint in the trumpets at the climax of the movement? Biggest problem in playing this piece. You don't hear them all with the Charles Dutoit reading on youtube. That just kills it for me. Hopefully Ashkenazy didn't let that happen
I love the beginning, with the fluttering flutes, glockenspiel, celesta, and muted trumpets. I do, however, not love the fact that they use the Russian version. So what if the conductor is Russian, I'll bet you nobody else in the hall was.

I was extremely lucky to be there at the audience with my wife. Ashkenazy spells the perfect magic all over. What a lifetime performance!!!

This is such a lovely video. I really like the performance of this wonderful music. I have always been an enormous fan of Vladimir Ashkenazy.
