I have this movie when I was lil kid! I thank GOD I have it bck then! Otherwise i'll never know it! I used to watch it with my bro over & over again! IT'S SOOO FUN! Robin Williams played Popeye very well! As if I believe Popeye is REAL! I just LOVE all the musics in it! I just MISS THIS MOVIE!!! I REALLY DO!!!! Popeye and Olive is ALIVE ppl!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D
when i was a kid i used to drive my parents INSANE singing this over and over again. haha whenever my dad wanted to be a pain all he had to do was start humming the tune and off i'd go.
ya know this movie made so much money when it was released hard to believe no studio ever considered a sequel, and if they did, well then there's no recorded info on it.
@ChaosDemonwolf fuck you it is the best movie in the world and im not just saying that because 6 generations of men in my family love popeye i say it because popeye is badass
@MsSarjen agreed, the casting was absolutely perfect for this movie, no one else could have pulled off the characters the way Shelly, Robin, Ray Watson (Poopdeck Pappy) and all the others, even the townspeople who make brief appearances, did. is sad though that Robin Williams regrets making this movie, one of his better roles i think
LOL, I've read that Shelley Duvall was nicknamed Olive Oyl in school. I nickname my dance teacher that too, since 15 years ago she was Olive Oyl when our middle school did Popeye.
it would be cool if they had a special with the person who played sweet pea,I am sure he was too young to remember any of this, but it would be funny to see his reaction to the film he should be around 31 years old today
lol! I remember seeing this on Cartoon Network in the 90s. What struck me is how everyone looks exactly like their cartoon counterparts. The actress playing Olive Oil's got the lanky look, the hair, and even the way she sits perfectly.
I fully agree! I just watched the movie here at home & if they wanted to do a remake of it that'd be stupid! If anything, they should do a sequal to it! For example its been about 25 yrs since they filmed Popeye and there was a part in the film when they recieved Sweet Pea that after 25yrs the real mother of Sweetpea will come back to get him. So there's something they could use for a sequal! They could use the original characters & cast aswell! Especially Robin Williams & Shelley Duvall!
Well I had checked IMDB.com & remake is due out by 2013. I agree that they should not be attempting this, but since they are, they had better get it right!!
Watch, in the future, Hollywood will try to do a remake and put some stupid actors trying to make it "cool." I can't stand the remakes that are done to classics of the past.
@psychotic202 : Yep, he has a movie. I thought it stunk as a kid ...I wasn't really into all the singing back then..but I love the movie now. It's almost like a prequel to the cartoons, with Popeye in town for the first time, meeting Olive, finding his dad, and the very first time he uses spinach.

This is such a darling movie and a part of my childhood. I remember seeing it dozens of times. That sort of reveals my age but I don't care!
I just quickly read that Harry "Nilsson" wrote all of the songs in Popeye. I always knew him from one of his more famous songs, "Everybody's talkin" from the film Midnight Cowboy.
I loved the old Popeye cartoons and Robin Williams is a comic genius but it just didn't come off right. Shelly Duvall was very believable as Olive Oyl.
The hell with a remake. Im tired of everything remade "better". This movie is perfect. It's UN hollywood thanks to Altman and that's important.
