I wanted to respond to your video, You mentioned in the video that A screen didn't expose because the emulsion was to thick, not the case the Screen was underexposed causing the image to fall out a little more exposure time would have corrected that problem.
The automatic press requires more set up and adjustments, but it is less time consuming for larger orders. There are new systems that you can use that are more simple now. Check out the fast t-jet.
Aww, I was hoping you would use that auto press, I run almost the same press everyday at work, bit bigger though, with 12 heads. Printing automatic is a beautiful thing.
Cool video though, its interesting to see how another printshop does things.
stcl3: "mickymouse"?? You must be one of those printers that talks more than does. If i had a dime for every egofied printer I ever worked with I would be rich. I made $12/$15 an hour as a REAL pro. NOW, I build MORE accurate equipment than others and make FAR more for printing at home as well. My operation is 'small'. Yet unique, fun and profitable. So guess how much I/we care about your bad attitude??? Zero.
I agree totally with you. People that spend time criticizing other's work should focus more time on improving their own craft. They must be trying to learn something if they're watching videos about screen printing on youtube, right? We all have little tricks that we can share with each other.
And besides, I'm just a graphic designer. I made this video as a class project for college. (I graduated a while ago) and my dad has been in a successful screen printing business for more that 25 years, so he must be doing something right. Let's learn from our neighbors instead of criticizing them.
Yes, you have to make a new screen for each design. In fact, you need to make a new screen for each color you want to print and align them, unless you use a machine like the t-jet that prints on the t-shirt in full color. It's new technology so the kinks are still being worked out on it.

do a google search, a lot of people have written DIY (do it yourself) screen printing zines (booklets), but like i said, its hard without a facility. FOr a couple hundred bucks you can get a small (8 x 10) screen burning system, and that is the hard part. The actual printing with the inks is pretty easy to get teh hang of, but getting a good image transfer without any equipment can be done using the sun, but its complicated. do a google search for DIY screen print
That was a sweet video intro to screenprinting, with cool music. It looks like you've got a nicely laid back setup there at Little Oscar's, in a beautiful location near the coast. One technical correction - the exposure unit doesn't really burn holes where the artwork is, it hardens the light sensitive emulsion that covers the rest of the screen: the artwork positive is a stencil that prevents light getting to parts that can then be washed out with water.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
