The drain is a metaphor for Lenny and Gene. Like water through a drain, they pass, unnoticed through society and are eventually discarded. Lenny acts without thinking, much like water through a channel. Gene begins to change, disrupting the flow.

We figured that, after a double-homicide, the police would be watching near bye hospitals for questionable people. Hospitals would ask a lot of questions when a gunshot wound is present as well.
