i love how this engine has been the staple for uk cars for 30 plus years used in land rover, rover cars, tvr, and it was a gm design. lol they cant even design there own v8 lol
Really Nice Car. One of the best engines britain ever made. That roar, and then the turbo's screaming, just sends tingles down my spine! Great video! :)
Well driven, nice noise :) sod jags and the like from the same era if I was going to have a classic from that era the sd1 would be the weapon of choice!
how does the engine hold up to hard driving i'v just got a 4 door mk3 cortina and was think of droping a rover sd1 v8 in it for the sound (thats why i watched your vid) i'v had turboed rovers but they did not last me long or i cud just go down the same old way of droping a capri 2.8 v6 but i want the sound of the v8 its just i dont want to fit the rover engine only to have it fuck up weeks later
@MrNxjohn the engines are fine and very durable i had a 3.5 V8 mk1 auto the only weakpoints on the sd1 can be the standard 5 spd manual box oh and make sure u have decent cooling as they run hot when driven hard in my sd1 the v8 was good for a top speed of 140mph with the stock 3speed auto box so ur proberlly best off with like a six speed auto or a good strong manual like a getrag box
@jameslrbrand2002uk i stuck the auto in that came with the engine but i did not think it needed a roll cage so i never fitted one now i got a twisted car lol yer i found out it run hot after a long drive out i went to check engine mounts,nuts,pipes... was still in place and ended up with a burnt arm lol 140 ? i cud only get about 130 out of it did yours feel like it was holding back i just thought it was the gearbox i was hopeing for 150+ for the money and work gone in to it
@MrNxjohn you best bet if yours is overheating go to a company called rimmer brothers and get the kenlowe fan kit should help with the cooling they do alot of modifications and upgrades for the SD1 including sports exhausts/suspension and a polybush kit which improves the response of the steering too yep i got 140 out of mine it was definatley the gearbox was holding it back a little after all its just a 3spder lol though my V8 ran off the standard Twin SU carbs was yours carbs or electric ig ?
if ever you're out and about ikn North Wales(horseshoe pass?) again, please let me know so that I can be out too for you to overtake me so I can enjoy the noise :)
That is the best sounding stock SD1 I have ever heard. I has to be quite suped up is it the Vitese or just the dual intake? I seems really fast in this video...
Fucking hell. That high engine speed roar is music to my ears. Well done for posting. That's what makes driving enjoyable. You can't get that beautiful noise with a diesel.
Ah, BL at it's finest. I have never seen one here in the USA. I do own a 76 Jag XJ12C(or XJ5.3C as you call them in Europe) which is my fav but the SD1 is a VERY close second for me!
I currently have a 1990 Mercedes -Benz 230Te 5-speed manual, been wanting an SD1 since i can remember, Simply its not the best car ever but if i could have one i would and will!
But the Dacia crash tests are rubbish, it's a poor relation of the Renault-parent owners, anyone who buys a new one must un-educated. I think the XF is todays comarison to the 3500 V8 SD1 a big executive fast saloon car... most people couldn't afford an SDI V8 in 1982, or the running costs. Thanks.
No need to swear, I can drive lol, this film does not show me how. Say the new Jag XF is an underpowered shitbox. If it wasn't for NCAP we would all be driving shitboxes. What difference does it make? Protection from un-insured, speeding or drink drivers. Take it to the track guys.
It would have been the best car they had built had it not been a foul handling rust bucket. built by lasy twats under the glorious umbrela of the even twatier Layland twats. pity realy. Loved the st1. the ZT260 is much better handles well and don't rust.
I think I spotted my wife and three children coming the opposite direction on the school run, I'm glad you kept it on your side of the road or they'd all be ***king dead you ****.
love this are you running a 3.9 mxmad03 i just recently got a 78 series 1 3.5 V8 auto in its original carribean blue colour i use it every day and deliver pizza for domino's in darlington on the nights with it getting a bunch of tuning goodies for it from rimmer bros soon hopefully
That whining noise... Is that the live rear axle saying "had enough"? ;-)
Beautiful cars! I grew up with a golden SD1 3500 Vandan Plas (first series), which had to disappear for a bloody Metro... After that "disappeared" a Blue 2600 came but my parents hated it...
That is the sound of engineering. Modern cars have got nothing on these British bulldogs! :) Does it have syncro? Because I think I hear a transmission whine.
very nice to see a driver that has taken everything off his test and still practicing good controled driving with 2x hands on the wheel after a gear change and driving.......... at 60mph, very nice!!!!!!!
Thank a lot! I'd just about managed to quash my yearning for an SD1 (my dad had one from new) and then I see this and it all comes flooding back again!
Nice! I'm wondering if owning one should be on list of things to do before I die - my dad ran a P6 3500S daily for ten years and loved it, but maintains that the SD1's suspension and rear live axle are inferior. I like SD1's shape, but would want to make the interior less brutal. What's SD1 as a car to drive (and own)? How's the reliability? Some say sooth of the gearbox, but the P6 box wasn't great either. Would P6 rear suspension improve the roadholding? Dad says his cornered as if on rails...
Yes the rear suspension is a drawback, but mainly if it's wet. gearboxes can be a problem, all depends how much power you put through it, mine is approx 300bhp on the standard box. wouldn't be the best idea as an everyday car, (think of the fuel bill!) but better than a p6. mine is used mainly as a track day toy (vids on the way) and is far from standard, but still has a live rear axle.
Right. My dad's P6 was actually pretty economical (stock 152bhp, did 25mpg average, 30 on a good run). I've heard that if you put modern piezoelectric EFI plus an ECU on, they're good for 200bhp + 40mpg, which is bloody amazing for a nice V8. Still, I wonder about doing something involving a Daimler V8... smaller capacity should equal better fuel economy, shouldn't it?
As for the gearbox, what is the limit as to what you can put through them before they become problematic? I believe that TVR used a beefed-up SD1 box with its bored-out Rover V8s, which were good for at least 400bhp, but I don't know what their box reliability is like.
There is something so cool about the SD1 that I cant quite but my finger on, the rover 75 its future successor is bull crap. it is built better becasue it wasnt BL (no offence) but it dosent have anything that makes me feel cool
Used to have a race tuned 3.9 SD1 in early 90's. Used to do 7 miles per gallon - love to have one again but with fuel at 105p per litre it's just never going to happen.
Must be something about Monza red that turns an SD1 into something special! I have one too that needs work. I just wish they would have evolved the car into a series 3 with a coupe version and independant rear suspension, guess I could build my own??? Love this video!
just who quick /old is your car mate it sounds great and your insurance just passed test at 35 worked on them when i was 18 and always wanted a v8 straight six are for grandads.
Having owned 5 SD1's, this was a pleasure to view. Would give my right arm to get my 3500 Vanden Plas EFi back - she is out there somewhere! Keep the videos coming, fantastic viewing!
Yeah thats the fuel light, i see a lot of that. the dash has been changed at some point, prob wheb the roll cage was put in. the engine is a 4.0l with race heads and camshaft, 4 twin choke carbs feed it. hence the fuel light!
nice!!

i'm told the gearbox in the late vittesse version is the best and is good for 350bhp ish before you hit problems.
Stories of 200bhp and 40mpg are just made up i'm afraid. all efi systems have an ecu.
Smaller engines are usually cheaper to run but you lose out on the power side.
even with a modern v6 you will be doing well to get 30mpg.

Must be something about Monza red that turns an SD1 into something special! I have one too that needs work. I just wish they would have evolved the car into a series 3 with a coupe version and independant rear suspension, guess I could build my own??? Love this video!

Having owned 5 SD1's, this was a pleasure to view. Would give my right arm to get my 3500 Vanden Plas EFi back - she is out there somewhere! Keep the videos coming, fantastic viewing!

cracking video one reason why I own 3 sd1's a very underrated car with a very good parts supply still even better than for newer Rovers

That'll be your fuel light coming on then.
Being a V8, I'm surprised it doesn't have the wood panels on the dash. Goes quicker than my old 2600 VP, when it did go!

Yeah thats the fuel light, i see a lot of that. the dash has been changed at some point, prob wheb the roll cage was put in. the engine is a 4.0l with race heads and camshaft, 4 twin choke carbs feed it. hence the fuel light!

What roads are these?

That's mental. Why don't you just go EFI? Rover realised it in 82, too :)
