the whole scene is complete exaggeration and just set of stereotypes. Nobody in Ukraine would be surprised about somebody being a vegetarian and in fact people DO NOT eat that much meat beacuse it is expensive.
But to eat bread from the floor is the "greatest" scene, I suppose, the director is just not able for more "creativity" than pure mockery.
@electrokittie oh really? I think I understand it too good to laugh at it. Many people in Ukraine are not eating meat not because they are vegeterians but because they cannot afford it. At least regularly. For them eating meat may be a sign of wealthy and good life. Germans for example are eating three times more meat than Ukrainians. But nobody would dare to show them as fat narrow-minded morons. Sorry.
@Mandarink0 Yeah, that's not really the POINT of the joke is it though? It's a FILM , of course its exaggerated. Its exaggerated to get laughs. Do you really think that the entirety of the US perceive Ukrainians as weird guys with poor English skills who WANT to be American?
The point is, it makes Jonathan look strange and foreign because to the characters of Alex and his grandfather HE is the awkward middle class Jewish American stereotype. So erm, really it has nothing to do with meat. at all
@electrokittie If there are steretypes about Jewish Americans, they are much more harmless than the ones about Ukrainians. Meat was just an example, like eating potato from the floor and so on. The art of the humor is though in its universality,if it is insulting someone, it is not an irony anymore. And btw I do know much more about my own country and i do find it very insulting. I do not know ANY Ukrainian who find this movie funny. So I DO get the point, even too much of it.
@Mandarink0 well all I can say is welcome to hollywood cinema - WORLD of borderline offensive stereotypes. see 'representations of black culture' for reference.
@Mandarink0 Also, you could replace "Ukrainian" with ANY Non-American part of the world, be it Eastern or Western Europe, Australia, Africa or Asia, and that joke would still work, because they are not laughing at Ukrainians, they are poking fun at the odd little man who is out of his comfort zone. You could even replace "Ukrainian" with certain states in America.
Let me assure you, it wont alter the world-view of Ukraine in any large measure, it's just entertainment.
@Mandarink0 Oh common, it's funny! Have you seen Eurotrip? My Slovakian friends found the jokes about Slovakian culture (when the characters ended up in Bratislava) extremely funny. I don't mind when Belgians are being made fun of. How is a novelist/filmmaker to express confrontations between different cultures if stereotyping is not allowed? Sometimes it is very useful to deal with serious topics through humor. And pleaaaase don't tell me Germans are not stereotyped as narrow-minded :D
@Mandarink0 I don't see it as "insulting", maybe a little simplified. I'm Italian so i'm used to stereotypes, particularly in american cinema. Stereotypes can bring someone to laugh, but they also bring to think about cultural differences.
And I don't think it is insulting the thing about meat or eating something "from" the floor (it has just touched it!), it showes that eating isn't a thing to take for granted, and that not all the world is U.S.A.
@Mandarink0 The film just show what you said. In some countries there's no room for this stupid things, there are real problems. And this is positive for a film.
@electrokittie Poor English skills? The fact is, the english Alex is using is more "proper", and more exact. The words chosen can be understood, like "proximal", it's just that Americans don't speak "proper" English anymore, and haven't for a long time.
@protonman7 People who study language know that there is no such thing as 'proper English' anyay. I was trying to explain the point that the director/novelist is trying to make and pointing out that nobody in reality thinks that the people of Ukraine talk or behave this way.
@ElusiveWolf33 keep watching it! haha yes Trachimbrod is a really big part of this... you'll see :) although my teacher did say that the book has a lot of differences... i haven't read it so idk, you might be disappointed
I hate how this video makes Ukrainians look uncivilized are dimwitted. Ukraine is nothing close to what is portrayed here. This is like a second Borat.
@skanpararas, the thing is, the landscape is the same and such, if that's what you mean, but the people are different. This is a good movie but it's really exaggerated. It's just that people know little about this country and therefore will most likely base their views on it based on what they see in this movie.
@mylooxcankill some ukrainians are, and i don't actually feel anything negative about how this movie shows them. there are good people and bad people in every country
*WARNING* dragonsder is a grotesque stalking retard, who enjoys harrasing others (with many fake names) and even goes through your comment history in order to stalk you! He clearly has no life whatsoever and has a hissy when you either IGNORE, or RESPOND to him. HE is beyond help, and I pray he is posting from some VERY secure establishment for the mentally insane. He is a danger to his local community. DO NOT GET INTO A CONVERASTION WITH THIS CREEP!
LOL i'd been watching this scene in a version without the subtitles and that was funny enough because you could imagine how they were getting annoyed... but now i know what they were actually saying hahaha ... 'please, this american is deranged' lol, and how they're all like 'what is wrong with him?' :D
Well I guess that's proof that you don't know how to read. I have consistently explained that you made a fake account called Dragensder to post the comment, but then you removed it because I caught you. You don't care though. You wont even be able to read this comment. You'll just cover your ears and shout at the top of your lungs and then claim victory. Because that's how pathetic losers like you work.
well we can't tell you what's wrng with him, but we can tell you what's right about him... and that's he has respects and knows there's better things to eat than a bit of fleshly made corpse :)
