  • Gould is easily the greatest musician of the 20th century..

  • Can you imagine if this guy was around to see the internet, youtube, and social media? That would have been perfect for Glenn and we would get to enjoy his random rants live.

  • so what if he prefered Bach over Mozaert and Bethoven? If you really "get" Gould then you probably agree with him.

    He was a GREAT soul.

  • Too boring? Too boring? OK Let's try it again, less boring (LOL) this time!

  • "That is too boring, let's try it again," lol

  • Gould was a genius, too bad his playing was spoiled by his obnoxious singing. Oh and also that he was probably a textbook definition of a narcissist.

  • @cfwpiano I like his obnoxious singing. It's an excellent way to figure out what emotions were going on while he was playing. And it's different. It's Glenn Gould and I simply don't mind

  • what a brilliant pianist. I love the passion in his face

  • Glenn's 40s looked more blue(of couse mixed with gray) than ever, but still beautiful....

  • I never listen to Glenn Gould playing Bach

Try John Lewis Grant and other great Canadian pianists. Their performances of Bach are wonderful.

  • I believe there are some pianists good enough in Canada. But please listen to his 1955 and 1982 Goldberg Variations recordings. Someone said that listen to his playing is like mediation. According to Mozart and Beethven, no need to take his comments seriously^^ Just listen to his playing...strange, FUN, and whole new interpretation. That's why we love him.

  • We have Gouldmaniacs here in Canada, talking about the so-called "power" of Gould... Tones of books published, all repeating the same thing...

his personal belongings are honoured at the National Library. What's more? His stupid monument etc...

Trust me, I myself is Canadian, we have better pianists here in Canada.

His Bach is so boring, monotonic...

  • very impressive

  • he is a rock star

  • arrogant? a man who gave himself to education and was known to be kind to all those around him, especially children.

I would say that for a genius of superhuman ability, he was really very lovely.

  • superhuman ability? Don't over exaggerate things. That would give others the impression that he's overrated. Other artists such as Barenboim are just as good.

  • Well said

  • The fact that he loved children and continued to learn music has nothing to do with the fact that he said "Mozart was a bad, overrated composer who died too late" and called his superb symphony no.40 "eight remarkable measures ... surrounded by a half-hour of banality."

I detest Gould's tedious string quartet.

He claimed what constituted "banality" in music, and often arrived at self-centred conclusions.

People should consider this before they criticize others for calling him arrogant.

  • *He claimed he knew what constituted "banality" in music

  • I'm not saying he's arrogant. I'm saying we must face facts without letting favoritism cloud our judgement. After all, he was a fine performer of Bach, Beethoven. But I dislike it when Gould-worshippers come up with all kinds of stupid nonsense. There's no "superhuman ability". Don't confuse the term with talent. If Gould had a superhuman ability, people like Mozart must have been omniscient musical psychics.

  • Artists like Argerich, Kissin, Barenboim, Schiff, Lipatti etc are just as talented, accomplished as Gould, if not more.

  • By the way, Gould misinterpreted Mozart's A minor sonata and various works by Chopin. That shows he's human, just like us. He also made mistakes. Face the fact. He was talented, but had no "supernatural", "superhuman" ability.

  • @chopinandliszt You are so pompous as to declare Gould's inability to translate Mozart, yet -who- are you? What success have you in order to be at such capacity to judge Gould, his legacy, his standing, and impact within the classical performers? Such pretentiousness can be explained away in a single word, 'envy.' It is fine, and expected for one to have an opinion. But one must be of a standard equal or higher in order to judge. Merely pointing out your fallacy in logic versus his success.

  • @Thilindel If you read his biography, you'll find he had no respect for 18th century opera music, and even said "musicians stopped being composers during the 18th century" in a talk show.

it's a valid criticism that's not meant to damage Gould's reputation, he didn't play Mozart, Chopin with as much as care as other pianists, for example, Stanislav Bunin. Condemning my opinion as a display of jealousy is like saying one must never question Obama's policy because we're common people.

  • Don't be so gullible. You don't know the other side of Gould.

He attempted to write an essay about how Mozart's exemplary K491 can be considered a bad work. In a talkshow, he even described one of the themes from Beethoven emperor concerto as "junk", "silly tune".

He learned some composition, he thought his ability, musical insight far surpassed theirs. He arrogantly claimed he knew what constituted "banality" in music.

According to some book, he was jealous of Horowitz's technical prowess.

  • Fuck off, you obsessed, sick mind. Get a life, no matter how long you advertise about the theory you created to please your own little mind, no one would give a damn.

The point I was trying to get across was that I don't understand Glenn Gould's slanderous remarks of Mozart.

Learn to read proper english, you're not even at the level of a French Canadian.

I don't care. Dickweed. Get a life, you're old enough to do that.

  • @chopinandliszt don't appriciate that french canadien statement.....

  • This guy was a genius, so original, only the fucks in the world will never see it.

  • Good, glad you threw in that last phrase there. Needed something.

  • stfu

  • so you're saying, this "guy" called Gould never saw Mozart and Beethoven as geniuses, but he was never a "fuck", but those who don't care much for Gould are "fucks"... Explain your logic. Have you even watched the talk show where Gould describes one of the themes from Beethoven E flat concerto as "junk", "silly tune"?

Andras Schiff, Barenboim are better pianists IN MY OPINION.

  • @username1p You're so right! He's my favorite pianist for classical.

  • @username1p haha great comment

  • @username1p I will remain unmarried until I find someone who understand what you just said.....

  • @username1p i actualy LOL'd haha.

  • lang lang is a jerk

  • i hope you mean lang lang and not gould

  • @Grigoris80 lang lang jerks off to the piano in front of millions, and has an orgasm on it.

  • yes u are right lang lang has better face playin; on the other hand gould isnt playing at all -its REAL

  • Yeah, I really can't stand Lang Lang. Sure, he's very talented and an excellent pianist, but the emotion and power and excellence that Gould puts into each one of his perfromances is just gold. You can't beat it, no matter how fast your fingers can move across the keyboard.

  • LOL he's hilarious
