I think it is much more likely that these structures had a practical use and you need to consider that ancient civilizations concentrated most of there energy on surviving and I think this must be a primary consideration when trying to determine the history of these sites.

the first thing that I would suggest about this sight is that the purpose of the ditch around the out side could be to keep pests out.so it would be a guarded area.

Not sure about the spectator sport idea? Not because its a daft but because once you have reached a conclusion - your mind stops thinking about the problem - I think its far more interesting to keep saying "Stone circles... we really don't know but...." Can we really observe what is going on? Can we objectively see what is there - rather than what think should be there? Interesting.

@slightlymooshed Absolutely - but it's not a conclusion, it's a suggestion based on long, hard thinking, standing at the actual sites and tied in with some very interesting archaeological evidence. But it might be as wrong as wrong can be, but it would take a very strong argument against for me to drop it. Many people react against it simply because they don't want it to be but given that it wasn't all that long ago and what we know of human nature - I think it stands up.

@bottman2512 - Have you considered that the view of the spectator may be purpose of this experiment? It is a very interesting observation that the viewer can see the whole scene and yet the person in the scene cannot see the observer. Its all very quantum. Perhaps our ancestors liked to play around with these ideas?

I was referring to the post below, where the poster clearly mentioned sacrifed babies! I also did not refer directly to Stonehenge being celtic because it is a blanket term for various tribes. As for nowhere in celtic history - well, celt history was mainly oral and anything we do have comes from those in the employ of Rome, so is hardly unbiased. I didn't say that I thought the celts built Stonehenge either. They did have a priesthood though, who were probably astronomers

There were no 'sacrificed babies' - the concept of twins was not considered evil in Celtic culture - Boudicca's daughters were thought to be twins. As for disabled/blemished babies, they would have been quietly euthanised if horribly deformed, as in many cultures - even the Romans did it. If there was a human sacrifice, it would have been from the Royal line. The Celts and prior peoples sacrificed their best to the Gods - Lindow Man and gold torcs.

I have being hearing since always that archeology proved by the skeletons and mummies they find that Stonehenge wad a human sacrificial place. @936justme At Stonehenge there are literally hundreds of human, & some animal, remains. These are concentrated as cremated remains in holes around the henge banks, in Aubrey Holes, in the ditch, and inside the stone circle itself. A few skeletal remains too. The bronze age tumulis you see in the landscape are mostly Bronze age dating slightly after the stones, but some are built on earlier graves. Most ancient cultures performed sacrifices, human&animal. Ancient Britain was not much different.

If this where a circle full of wooden stomps with an arena in the middle, then where's the entrance? Where's the walkway for the gladiators to come in? I think they have the whole thing upside down here. Instead of the middle being the lowest part, why not make it the highest part of the structure? Why not make it a wooden staircase temple? That's the only thing I can make of it, since there doesn't seem to be an entrance on the ground, then it must have a stairs.

There is absolutely no evidence for this being gladiator arena. A henge is for no other purpose than astronomy; the circular mound around the ditch creates a false and uniform horizon so that precise measurements of stars can be made. The ditch full of water is a reflecting pool, the nine concentric circles are reference points from which measurements were taken. The man in this video is either poorly informed or deliberately misleading. I suspect the latter.

@BEERIOUS .A henge is indeed for many purposes other than astronomy! It keeps something in--or out --symbolically. Many henges have deep pits in them (Maumbury, Stonehenge)--you can't use those to look at the stars. Almost if not all contain human remains (Stonehenge has over 240 burials inside the bank and ditch.) Most henges have no signs of water in the ditch, most do not have 9 rings.There are alignments without question but they wouldn't have been viewed scientifically but ritually.

@BEERIOUS there are many speculations as to the purpose of the different circles around the country. the only theorys that have had any solid grounding are those of astrology like you mention and those of religious sacrifice and ceremonys of the druids, shamans and pagans that made offerings to their gods in the stars. the one that i found the worst was how they found remains of sacrificed babys that were born with blemishes on their skin or even twins because of the myth that one was evil.

Our suggestion is only an hypothesis, but a) Stanton Drew has not been excavated so of course there is no 'evidence' and b) the excavations at Durrington Walls where there is similar construction, there certainly IS evidence that suggests archery aimed at live animals took place within the henge structure.

Hmm, I'm no expert but maybe the posts exist for construction purposes. AE they were in the middle of building another stonehenge and had to abandon construction. Using thick wooden posts in such close proximity would be a logical way to heft and position large slabs of stone. Just throwing that out there.

They weren't here to kill and replace the population, but to take its wealth. The romans then were pagans too don't forget, and quite tolerant on the whole. They just had a problem with druids because they taught revolt and threatened Rome's rule.

I really dont think theyd have spent years building a gladiator arena. In my opinion, it was more likely used to ceremonies which people could view. This could be anything from important funerals - to the priest and priestess have sexual contact to concencrate the May day celebrations. Evidence suggests that Avebury was the marriage/fertilization centre, perhaps with enthasis of mayday. Stonehenge was the solstice area, so presumably this may be the equinox or funeral/samhein centre.

Some of the mother/child cremations in auspicious places are suspect of some kind of ritual too; I wouldn't say 'sacrifice' for sure but wouldn't rule it out.
