hey, hey, hey please respect others' opinion. If we all live in a world where all people have the same opinion, there will be no more varieties in music. so just chill gentlemen, whether you like Richter more than Chiu, or the other way around
@predoje Could you please elaborate on that a bit? How is Richter's interpretation "smaller", I'm no fan of Prokofiev's version of this but dare I say this one sounds A LOT like Richter's.
@MaximPodolsky in lot of way. One of them is because in this i hear music in front not personality...you probably will never understand it...nor i expect you to understand. good luck.,
@predoje I will never understand it because there's nothing to understand, since you haven't explained anything. I can't understand something that was never said. I do understand, however, that this is in no way "bigger" than Richter's performance. You probably will never understand that, but then there's nothing I can do, good luck :)
Yeah this piece is a freaking maelstrom of technical complications. I'm learning it right now and cannot figure out how Frederic Chiu has a serene, almost nonchalant expression on his face throughout the entire performance. When I perform this, my face is contorted in pain as my fingers desperately struggle to keep from cramping up.
Man, I wish I could reach those 9ths as easy as he does! Great interpretation...and I love how he stayed true to the initial speed...most people slow down...I will try to remember not to do that, ;)... Nice ending too...very "suggestive"!
I don't know why? I can reach them...it's just a stretch for me. It's not stopping me from playing it and a lot of other rather "large" pieces! Alcia De Larrocha also has really small hands and she's an awesome pianist! You shouldn't feel sorry for me...it doesn't bother me! Lol!
Heh, I'm just jealous of those people who can reach 12 white keys :( I'm told my hands are big, yet I can't reach 10 white keys without hitting other keys.
I know! But then again, who isn't? I tell you one thing I have learned about pianists with smaller hands...they play music like Mozart, Bach, and Haydn very well and with ease! Tee-hee! Well, for your age, that's a good reach! :)
As Rachmaninov has demonstrated already, women and men are not equal. I have seen women pull off a decent Prokofiev, but none have I seen with the upper body strength of a prolific Russian man with huge hands, such as Rachmaninov.
Barbara Nissman,a female pianist plays this piece very well. I have to agree with most are saying. This is one of the best interpretations of this piece on youtube.
I played the last movement of Prokofiev's 6th Sonata for Chiu at a master class a few years ago - not only is he a great pianist, but he's really personable and easy to talk to - he's a total class act!
BRAVO! I have hair exactly like his, except I'm russian, and I'll be posting myself playing this piece soon too. Just learned it, need to get it ready for my audition at Oberlin
Not needing to show off with his superior pianistic technique, Chiu shows a total control along the piece. Although a bit harsh for me, it matches pretty well Prokofiev's idiosyncratic style. You might also want to check out Ron Regev own version on Youtube. Thanks for your records and pursuing your musical career despite being already a Computer Scientist.
Wonderful performance!! I have the box of Chiu's complete recordings of Prokofiev's music. There are pieces like the Scherzo opus 12, no.10 which I never heard played so well and so fast!!!!!!It's really impressive!!

This is the best performance that i hear... Richter and Prokofiev interpretation seems small in compare to this.

It's hard to believe this is one of Prokofiev's earlier works. Geesh! What a brain that man had! Both he and Debussy were revolutionary.
And Frederic Chiu does Prokofiev's piano works with great energy. Love it!

It's too perfect. For the music to speak itself it needs to pull of away slightly away.
But it's a fantastic performance! And very entertaining. I could feel a rush of adrenaline.
And it was interesting how he was looking so relaxed in the Big bits.

As Rachmaninov has demonstrated already, women and men are not equal. I have seen women pull off a decent Prokofiev, but none have I seen with the upper body strength of a prolific Russian man with huge hands, such as Rachmaninov.
