I think that the writers at showtime should consider having dexter have a guardian angel (harry, his father) and a demon (trinity killer, the killer of rita) but it should be written as if he cannot control it, e.g. he breaks the in a way that feeds his dark passenger more then when he obeys the code. But there is serious consequences, have harry try to pull him to the code and try to pull him in line and have trinity in his head like harry pulling away from the code.

Well ya I agree that it's silly to ask for the origin of the passenger not because it has some weird paranormal origin, but more because the show has ALREADY explained the dark passenger. Dexter saw his mom brutally murdered in front of him at a young age, he developed a trauma based mental disorder through this making him the man he is today.

The dark passenger question is refering to the books in which it's an actual entity. It's even refered to as "demonic possesion" at one point. Dexter even says "we" when he kills his victims. It's pretty different and some fans want the show to resemble the nooks more. I actually prefer the show in it's own right. The books can get weird but I still appreciate them as dark humor and criminal fiction.

I always found the Dark Passenger more of an entity in the books. In the TV series, Dexter plays it more like an obsessive compulsive behaviour that he has given a name to. The third book I think talks about the origins in depth.

Unless they got something better than an ancient demon-like creature from the beginning of time spawning other ones and hunting them down I'd suggest they stay away from the Dark Passenger. The 3rd book was a major letdown to me. The others were really good and fun, but that was just a tad too out there and it missed the tension of the books before. The story was just out there and all over the place, and didn't quite fit the dexter universe imo

Only the first season of Dexter is based on the first Dexter novel, after that the show is completely in the hands of the show writers.

Also ya that book was weird, had the same humor, and general great writing, but the whole ancient demon thing was pretty fucked up, and stupid the Tv show trumps the books
