  • SEI STATA INVIATA DA DIO PER LAGIOIA DI CHI TI ASCOLTA.

  • The sheer legato sweep of Olivero's concept of this melody, and her total mastery of breathing, would be astounding from a singer in her prime. The knowledge that this great artist was 92 is both humbling and wonderful for me.

  • She is the greatest operalegend of the 20th century. The last verismo soprano. The last of the old school of breathcontrol. And beautiful tones.

Ever heard her as Marta in the totaly unknown opera La Guerra by Renzo Rosselini ? Amazing. ECLIPSE: EKRP-7.

Magda is neglected by the record-companys, like Gencer, Zeani, Moffo, and so on. For them there were only Callas and Tebaldi. Both great performers, but it is so nice to hear different voices, so we can make our own opinion.

  • Cher Oneguin,

  • Dear Onegin,

Here i am again, at a lonely Monday morn, no work to do, only sorrow, and finding comfort and hope...people can perform such miracles!

Amen.

  • Whenever i,m down, i go here, and look and listen to this beautiful angel...thank you Onegin, for posting this! She's singing so sweet, there's no comparison...and her sweet little face, wish those two priests weren't sitting in front!

  • So very inspiring at any age, but the fact that she was over 90 and still singing should make us all work a little harder to keep our gifts alive!

  • the bread of heaven becomes the bread of man. What a wonder a poor and humble servant portakes of the lord

  • Well, amazing for a woman who is 92! Brava!

  • 92 yaers old and still a overwhelming personalety. Some 20 till 30 yaers ago she sang every year in the church of the little village of Solda, near the border of Switserland, where she was on holliday. She came there every year and was the queen of the village. I still have a LP of those songs.

    Magda is my favourite.

  • Beautiful...........simply beautiful

  • uniquely moving as ever! Her ability to float a note and swell it all on the air have not left her. I always thought there was a spiritual component to her performances in the 50's and 60's(and 70's for that matter) and here it stands revealed. We shall probably not hear the like of Signora Olivero and her wonderful colleagues of that era (Zeani, Gencer) again.

  • I will never, never understand why such legendary and venerated singers such as Olivero, Gencer, and Marisa Galvany were all but ignored by the commercial recording companies of their eras. Were it not for pirated tapes we would have been robbed of the great joy these possessors of once-in-a- lifetime voices have given us. All gifts from the Gods.....

  • You are SO right !!!!

  • Olivero didn't want to commit herself so solely to a commercial career, i think...she wanted to be with her family, instead of sacrificing it to being on the road always...it's that love that you can hear in her voice; not a hard career bitch, but a symphatetic person..

  • This is musical history. Despite the inevitable flaws in the voice at the age of 92 years, we are priviliged to hear one of the few post war sopranos singing, and on film. Some would say Callas should never have filmed her Tosca act 2,1964, when her voice was in ruins.Nonsense!

  • Incredible art of singing !

    Marvellous...

  • I have to say that as a student of the Vechia Scuola Italiana, if one maintains good health and can reach that age, yes it is possible to sing. She did have a vibrato problem but that did not hinder her from singing Tosca at the Met when in her 60s! I have yet a lot to learn about this school of singing but I am on my way...

  • how can any cunt criticise an old woman of 92?fuck off cunt!haha

  • Magda I love you !!!!!!!

  • In my opinion, Olivero is one of the most overrated opera singers. The voice itself is nothing special but the vibrato caused her to be chronically flat, even in her youth. I know she has ardent fans but I cannot abide hearing her.

  • Can you sing at all??

  • So does that mean if you don't have a solo career, you must be worse than that? Good Heavens, critiquing an old lady singing in church, and a singer with a long career of performing lead roles in opera - if your own singing hasn't made the cut, you could a least try with personality!

If I make it to 92, I'd be thrilled to be able to sing like this!

  • LOL, ok, so you are a singer who is almost 40 and never had a solo career who dares to say that Olivero is one of the worst sopranos? Why don't you show a video of you singing so we can all see how well you sing at 39?

  • you are a comedian lol!

  • Better to hear her sing a bit flat at 90+ than to hear some of the sopranos today who are en route to burning themselves out at 40 yrs with wobbles a train could drive through! What's out there today can't begin to compare to Olivero and her mastery of voice throughout the 20th c.

  • @Samurai9 I never thought Olivero had a particularly beautiful instrument, but her technique is amazing and her interpretation and diction are excellent. The legendary mezzo soprano Marilyn Horne recommended that Olivero sing the title role Tosca in 1975 at the Met when she was 65 years old. You are entitled to your opinion, but its hard to take the opinion of a chorus singer seriously when singers much more accomplished than you think the opposite.

  • crying buckets

  • "Here, in 2007, we are watching one of the post war greats, singing. We should be grateful, truly grateful, Magda can still sing".

    With gratitude from lochness11,(formerly ecosse99)

  • Thanks so much to Onegin65: extremely moving footage. Is it an excerpt from a RAI programme? Then, maybe it would be interesting to have more if there is an interview (there seems to be) of this living legend.

  • Magda (for ever), we love you !

  • Where, Oh where has this been for the past weeks? Lovely to see it back.

  • Here, in 2007, we are watching one of the post war greats, singing. We should be grateful, truly grateful, Magda can still sing.

  • Thank you for posting these:)

  • Thank you for this presentation. We who have adored her for so many years are grateful to hear, that all the qualities we loved in the voice are still there. You recognize the sound of her voice immediately, and tchnically she is still capable of doing something, which should be over long time ago. Thank you.

  • Signora Olivero is singing at 96.Freni is in retirement

  • What an amazing and heartfelt tribute. Not the time or place for vocal critique please!

  • ONEGIN65----Many, many thanks for posting this, and sharing it with music lovers worldwide.

  • This is absolutely amazing. A 92 year old lady paying homage to a life long friend, long dead.I understand their friendship started during the long South American tours of the 1950's, as members of the La Scala on tour company.Like all great singers, their voice is an integral part of them as a person. As natural, and essential as eating and sleeping. Some people seem to be suggesting Magda should have been content to sit in a front seat, and keep her mouth shut. Impossible!

  • She still sounds absolutely amazing. WOW

  • Who cares if she sounds good. It's not like any of you paid. It's a tribute to a colleague. Do you think people stop singing because you don't like their voice.

  • I am one of those sops who love an aged voice. this is very pure and beautiful. I doubt i will be able to sing this well by 92 years of age, even if I continue practicing for the next half century! many thanks for this gem!

  • Rarely do such words as awesome, sublime, amazing,

    apply as they do here.

    dtmk

  • There is a god!

What a Voice - incredible, uncomparable, fantastic, squeez water even frome stones. #k.

  • Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • This is so wonderful to see this lady at her age sing so beautiful even tho her voice is not as good but is lovely brava and viva Callas too

  • My God... still such a wonderful line !

  • Asa much as I admire her, it really is time for Olivero to stop singing like this. She will just become a joke to people who wont know what she was like in her prime.

  • She's in her 90's! - her singing now is admirable and hardly a joke!

  • Breathtaking! Thanks soo much! brava!!!
