I didn't know Dennis personally. Just his music. I cry about Dennis's death often. I feel so bad that this has happened to him. He was a great musician. We are truly lost without him. I want to cry now. Why did this have to happen to Dennis? Not to mention he was as HOT as hell.
"Great grea composer... wonderful, wonderful singer..." In case there was any doubt... just let us know on what aspect we're competent to judge for ourselves.
Thanks for 'Holland' and 'Surfs Up' Jack. Two great BB albums. People say 'A Day in the Life of a Tree' was recorded as a joke. I myself dont find it very funny. I think its a beautiful song with a wonderful lead vocal. Thank you very much for that.
@machine1313 Who is this guy?? This guy is a Beach Boys legend. He pretty much single handedly turned popular opinion of the Beach Boys around from white-bread surf has-beens into the cool conglomeration of genius that those in the know always knew they were (some of them anyway - clue; the brothers :-)
"Sunflower" was brilliant but "Surf's Up" was even better. The reason being Jack Rieley.
@blackmore4 Beach Boys songs to which Jack Rieley contributed his brilliantly unique lyrical style: -
Long Promised Road / Feel Flows / A Day in the Life of a Tree / Marcella / You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone / Funky Pretty / Steamboat / The Trader / Sail on Sailor
Each and every one a dead cert for any Best of The 70s Beach Boys compilation.
I met Dennis in 1975.He was so nice and he was funny. We were sitting in the hallway of the floor they were on and he walked past and said "Must you always be in my way?" LOL
He wasn't serious it's just that he kept walking past us.He ended up taking my friend for a drink(lucky her)He was a beautiful man Pictures don't do him justice He had a camper which he always traveled in and wanted us to go camping with him for the day but we wouldn't have been able to get back home.
I met Dennis in 1977 or so at the old Peaches Records store in Dearborn Mi. He was there while on his promotional tour for Pacific Ocean Blue. He did a meet and greet with everyone who showed-up and you didn't have to buy anything. I have a treasured photo of me and him shaking hands. I hung around there for about an hour. Dennis sure seemed like a nice guy, He was friendly and professional with everyone there.
Jack Reilly, he managed them during the "low period" but one of the most creative periods of the early 1970s. Jack cowrote several songs with Dennis and Carl. He is the voice "singing" Day in the Life of a Tree. Probably a cool cat but seriously burned out on the subject.
@19arc7O How in hell does a kindly old queen with nothing but praise for Dennis come over as a "jackoff"?
This page seems to be populated by the Mike Love Republican wing of the Beach Boys fan club.
Reiley might well have been a dodgy manager - I have no idea - but I do know that his contribution to the more important things - their art - was genius.
I have a fond memory of Dennis Wilson from the Iowa State Fair when I was 14. It was midnight,a friend and I were walking around. This man walking past asked if we wanted to go on a ride that was shut down. We said sure. He asked if we knew who he was, we said, no. He said he was Dennis Wilson from The Beach Boys. I said, "if you are, then show us some proof." He got out his CA. driver license and it was him. He got a man to turn the ride on, bought us 2 rides and watched us have fun.
I worked closely with the BBs for a short time in the early '70s. The story Reilly tells about Dennis going off on the audience is BS. It happened in College Park, MD. in 1972. I know, because I was there. The song he was singing was not Barbara, it was "I Have A Friend." After Dennis stormed off stage, it was Reilly who told me to back to the dressing room and get Dennis back on stage. It was the day Barbara told Dennis she had filed for divorce.
(Continued) That's why Dennis showed up drunk for the show. He was at his lowest point emotionally. I won't discuss this further out of respect for Denny, but this was one of my most incredible experiences with my friend. No matter how long I live, Dennis will always have a warm place in my heart as a friend. And his early passing is one of the great tragedies in my opinion. Don't worry, Denny. You are still with us in our hearts and never more than a warm memory away. Peace, brother.
Thanks for coming forward and setting the record straight. I am also sorry for the loss of your friend. I'm a huge fan, and his music will be with me forever.
The Surfs Up album has, and always will be, my favorite Beach Boys album. The lyrics for Long, Promised Road were so powerful and positive.
Managers always get dissed. Peter Grant, of Led Zeppelin fame, was (to put it nicely) not the greatest guy. But he took great care of the band and was the first manager to insist that the band get a cut of the profits from the gate.
His utter insistence ended up helping a lot of musicians. Malcom McLaren (Sex Pistols) is another story...
He did alot for the them. Everytime things came up, like a tour, he had to get everyone on the same page. That included wives, that's a lot of people. Just getting a hold of them was a major deal. And he did it, made a lot of people happy. He could bullshit with the best of them.. kinda why he's here talking...good guy..
i knew dennis wilson back in the early 70's. he was a dear person but had a saddness that was tangible. he was way to high most of the time and was in desperate need of guidiance.....and mike love was not very kind to him either.
he still calls himself "producer", even though except western justice, beach boys and a few tiny co-projects he did nothing for music, despite he says otherwise...without any bit of proof, of course.
wearing sunglasses in front of the camera when its dark is a sign of a wanker.
@frol1984 No, a "wanker" is far better defined by someone who is completely deaf to lyrical genius. The Wilson brothers loved Jack Rieley; Mike and Al didn't. Does that make it clear?
@frol1984 Jack Rieley's lyrics are equal in evocative visionary power to those of Van Dyke Parks. His collaborations with Carl and Dennis resulted in some of the group's greatest music by far ("Steamboat", "Long Promised Road", etc.).
Why thank you, arseintrudingdildo, for your compliments. I like to focus on what we have in common -- like how dumb this guy is -- rather than our differences. As for as your insults, I don't remember speaking with you before. Neverthelss, I hope you have a great day.
Wait...Dennis Wilson heard about this jackass from Brian Wilson. Like this guy's so important Brian Wilson was talking about him? What? This idiot was a disc jockey hanger on. Look at him in his sunglasses. Careful, Jackass, you don't want to be recognized or fansd will attack you! Ha!
Billy Hinsche did a GREAT DVD about Dennis! PM me and I'll give you all the info. on ordering it. Billy's next DVD will be about Carl! I can't wait! BRAVO Billy! :-)
This is Jack Rieley. The free concerts they did that are mentioned were what they did to fulfill Carl's "Contentious Objector" release obligations from the late sixties.

I would take his comments with a grain of salt.
Reilly was known to be a bullshitter who finally was kicked out of the BB's organization for dishonest behaviors.
Have to admit he wrote some good lyrics for "Long Promised Road", however.
There is a great video for this tune on Youtube.
Check it out.
