Smart dive by Bure lol - Leetch's stick was at his waist when was "tripped". Anyway I love both those players. Bure, Richter, Belfour and Fedorov were my favorite guys to watch in the 90s. :)
White streak, speeds by. It's Pavel the Bure. Too fast for the naked eye, it's Pavel the Bure. Watch out, when he storms through, it's Pavel the Bure. He's the fastest thing alive!
@Newyorkrangersrule21 this was game #4, rangers led 2 games to 1. a vancouver win here would of tied the series up at 2-2. however, the rangers would of probably played game #5 differently at msg. if you remember, they played a free-wheeling game, their worst defense game of the entire playoffs and lost 6-3. so, i'll retract my thoughts that they might of lost the series if vancouver wins game #4!
Mike richter the robber just absolutely robbed one of the most lethal one on one players in nhl history. pavel bure is the one guy u dont want to face on a penalty shot and he made a great move, just fantastic leg save by richter.
the 1994 eastern conference finals and the 1994 stanley cup finals were the 2 most incredible series in nhl history, and the fact that they happened back-to-back was that much more amazing.
I defy anyone to come up with a more exciting and amazing pair of series than the two that closed out the 1993-1994 nhl season
I skated against Bure a couple times....before I got on the ice I was certain I was a really fast skater...but Bure was on a break away and I was right behind him...he checked and saw me...and then shifted gears and I pretended I pulled something and went to the bench...he was on another level....he had gears I just didn't have
In his prime (before all the knee injuries), Pavel Bure was probably the fastest player in the NHL and one of the most fearsome scorers. At the time (before his injuries), Mike Richter was probably the best goaltender in the NHL...a true matchup for the ages.
Since I was born and raised in NY.. I can tell you that RIchter was certainly not a "pariah" after game 1...Don't know where you got that from... but it is totally wrong. McLean did hold his own in the first 2 games, which is only the only reason the Canucks weren't swept. Overall Richter is still the greatest US born goalie ever..watch the highlights of the '96 World Cup...he basically steals the Cup fro Canada IN Montreal...Love you 2 by the way!
Th Cancuks dominated the first 10-12 minutes of this game, after that it was all Rangers. Vancouver had a chance to put this one away here, but Richter stoned Bure, The Rangers continued to dominate play, took advantage of a RETARDED penalty by Martin Gelinas and won the game. Despite that, the Canucks played a GREAT series, in what was one of the best finals of all time. I am rooting for them to win the cup this year, as Van is a great hockey town & they deserve it!
Mike Richter is the greatest American born goalie of all-time. His dominance in the 93-94 season (highlighted by this save) and his other-worldly performance in the 1996 World Cup separate him from all other US born goaltenders. It is a shame that his career was cut short by concussions. He was also one of the most interesting and entertaining interviews in hockey. A brilliant man (he subsequently got a degree from Yale) he is sorely missed by American hockey fans!
Why does everyone go crazy? It's just a bunch of grown men trying to knock a rubber disk into a net. The players do not hail from any particular town and they change teams.
Where was Beukeboom when he should've been staying at home to protect against this? I named my cat (Beuky) after him, but this was not good on his part.
BTW, grrrreat save by Richter. He stood on his head in the 1997 playoffs and powered the NYRs past Florida and NJ with some amazing work that year. Go Mike!
Bure was stupid and Richter was brilliant...Bure pulled this same move against Richter earlier that year in the All-Star Game and Richter stoned him. Goalies remember when shooters are stupid..
it's easier for someone like Bure to score on a breakaway than a penalty shot. but then who knows, maybe in your faggot world the rules are different...
I hate the rangers more than anything, but to stuff Pavel Bure in his absolute prime here in a penalty shot in the stanley cup finals.... Amazing. The one bad thing about shootouts is it has taken some excitement from breakaways and penalty shots which were so rare then.
Its hard to appreciate the magnitude of this play unless you understand just how other-worldly Pavel Bure had been playing at the time. Richter is a God in NY for this one play alone.
@rico1096 True that. Too bad I was not interested in hockey back then. Would've been nice to see the series "Live", as it was possible back then without expensive pay-per-view's here in Finland.
Baumer's right. Richter is still talked about in bars across Canada (I would know., having worked and drank in eight provinces). His performance in the '96 World Cup was the best goaltending I've seen in international play.
I would have to say that these times in this relative timeframe in the NHL were really the cream and cherry-topped cake of the NHL's more relatively recent past.
This was back when (and not long ago, only 16 years ago now) the pace of the game on the ice was remarkably consistently fast, exciting, and quite open-ended.
Teamwork was paramount as a result.
More skill and talent was paramount and essential for goaltenders adopting smaller equipt and much more exciting styles more classic.
@GmanGregilla And, though, I find the NHL still cool enough these days (except for the highly regrettable and semi-ludacris NHL lockout 5-6 years ago now), it doesn't compare as to how it did before all of these semi-"sumo-esque" butterfly goaltenders starting establishing themselves en masse with all of their sizeable overpadding, flaps, cheaters, and oversized equiptment all on them (they could just wear effective kevlar and the like).
The NHL lost its true magic touch sometime down the road.
Ritcher was an amazing lateral goalie. I wonder why more players didn't try to beat him in the five hole. I think with players like Datsyuk, he would have deked Ritcher out of his jock strap before he put it in an empty net. Pavel was an explosive player but damn, I don't think his speed would be that relevant in today's game with so many goons dishing out concussions left, right and centre.
I remember watching this and it was good memories. This was one of the best stanley cup finals to watch. Mike Richter was the man and helped the rangers get through the playoffs and helped the team win the stanley cup in 1994. Richter was one of the rangers best goalie they had in the 90's. I was jumping for joy when Richter stopped Bure and I was shaking watching this also. I was just happy watching the rangers win the cup and breaking the curse 1940. It's just sad Richter's career ended early

It was a damn good save on the greatest breakaway guy in the history of hockey. There's a reason why this is a special moment and it's cause of Pavel Bure
i was at that game. lets go rangers . 1 that was stupid of brian leech 2 i thought he was going to score on the breakaway. 3 SAVE BY RICHTER ,SAVE BY RICHTER ,SAVE BY RICHTER
Messier, Richter, and Leetch were the reasons... and those 5 or 6 other ex-Oilers the NYR picked up at that year's trade deadline was the reason... are the reasons why the Cup went to NY!
Vancouver just didn't have the experience... or the luck!
leetch going that deep into the corner was just asking for a breakaway

Richter was underrated. I don't think he ever lost on a penalty shot.

Messier, Richter, and Leetch were the reasons... and those 5 or 6 other ex-Oilers the NYR picked up at that year's trade deadline was the reason... are the reasons why the Cup went to NY!
Vancouver just didn't have the experience... or the luck!
