I was seven years old when I read my first ultimate comic. That universe was my childhood, and it still is now, nine years later. But reading this was just fucking offensive. Loeb ruined the ultimate X-Men, Avengers, and the Fantastic Four.
At least my favorite, Spiderman, was thankfully MIA for the worst of it.
In 2001 when the Unlimate Univese came about I was16, and used it to get into comics, and for the first five years, it was really good, except for Ultimate fantastic four. But anyway, it's a shame that they turned teh Ultimate universe into this garbage. I hated Ultimatum. And I can't believe Jeph Lobe, the guy who wrote teh HUSH story arch, wrote this.
I just read Ultimatum 3 yesterday after getting the back issues of the first two out of curiosity. Maybe its because I was never really into the Ultimate line, but I liked it. I hated Ultimates 3, which I read because Joe Mad was doing it and his pencils were computer colored over, so what's the point. But, I thought it gave a sense of 'stuff can actually happen.' Some of the stuff is messed up. I'm really in Ultimate all of a sudden. What happened?
I love ultimate x-men and spiderman, and this story line alone destroyed them both. Spiderman is still going on, but it's not the same, and forget Ultimate X, its trash.

I totally agree with this and the UU was the universe that drew me back into the comic book scene and now after this arc is done I'm pretty much done with comic books.
on top of all that they LOEB dosent describe anything!! the heroes just fly to magnetos floating citidal and just one by one crash threw his windows. no game plan just "LETS GET EM!!" magneto gets his arm cut off and keeps fighting like he lost a shoe. i predict magneto will take control of wolverine (with his skeliton) and kills a couple of his own teamates forcing ironman to put him down. i belive the first assualt team will fail. wolverine survived a nuke so loeb better not kill him!!!
i dont have enough room to describe how bad ultimatum is. how did Dr Doom get out of the zombie-verse? Where the HELL has Collosus been during this whole time!?! How is Doc Strange possesed by nightmare in spiderman 133 then totally fine in ultimatum 4?? magneto slices valkeries neck then shes just fine in the next panel??? WTF!!??
Maybe it would be A LITTLE better if some of the deaths were more DIGNIFIED. Character deaths are supposed to signify that the story is heating up and getting BETTER, but it seems like this Ultimatum thing was poorly handled in that area.
I stopped reading it so I have no idea what's been going on lately. My condolences to those who feel compelled to keep reading it, like dariuscastor up there.

Jeph Loeb has always ignored continuity, but he took it to new levels when he started writing Ultimate titles. Apparently he forgot/didn't care/didn't know that Forge and Longshot were bad guys and Pyro and the Wrecking Crew were good guys.
When fans point this out Loeb just tells them to get a life, and then proceeds to piss on them off even more.
For example: Loeb turned Pyro from a good kid to a rapist, then next issue has him say "I used to be an X-man!" before getting his fingers cut off.
It's cuz you just don't 'get it' papercut. Didn't you know? You've gotta be like that 7 year old kid who reads Hulk and blogs about it. According to Loeb, that kid 'gets it.' Oh, and unless you can live in New York or LA on the wages you earn writing for TV or comics, don't bother criticizing him.
You know, I'm not even going to bother reading Ultimatum...I just found out that two of the great Catalan comics artists died a few days ago, quintessential Vampirella artist Jose Gonzalez and and long time 2000ad artist Jose Casanovas passed away on 13th and 14th march respectively.

As far as ultimate x-men and spider-man go. I always got the impression that teenagers were the target audience for these books. So while reading them if I ever came to a cringe worthy moment i'd try to keep that in mind.
You make some valid observations Dirt. We do tend to view these books through the established fanboy perspective, which these days means 30-somethings, so by changing the paradigm, the style of the writing makes more sense.

The ironic thing about the ULTIMATE universe is that it began as an uncluttered modern take on the basic Marvel U.
Now is beyond repair and is Marvel comics at its worst.

Yeah, "Ultimatum" blows.
I've said this before, but the only thing that I like about this book is Magneto actually being evil.
