Santo cielo! Più che una strada sembra un muro! Sarebbe già una bella impresa farla a piedi... Complimenti a tutti coloro che sono arrivati in cima, un giorno ci proverò anch'io ;)
Is 1.30 hours enough to make the climb? The way should be dangerous! Is not? The road is made of cement or tar? I think is a dream for any rider to be in this place. Near from my house in Tavira (Algarve-Portugal) the max inclination i have found is 17% just for more than 100 meters
1:30 is enough; the hardest part is driven in 35 mins. The road is made of liquid cement. It is indeed the heavan on earth. The way is not dangerous uphill but downhill you really have to be alert. Very important is that you have enough air pressure because the tire tends to move on the rim and then suddenly the air is gone! This can be crucial on the step part - so better go by feet...
If you are just asking for the quality of the road: The quality is definitely good enough for a Road bicycle! However, the last part of the climb is for MTB only. If you make it until there with a Road bike you can say nevertheless that you did it because at this stage the important sections are over and the climb reached stable 20% - which is easy going compared to the beginning / middle section!!!
PS: It just came into my mind that apart from the quality of the road aditional aspects have to be considered, such as the physics of a MTB compared to a road bike. For instance, my MTB was due to the fixed fork down-leveled and the wheels of a MTB are further apart - which all increases the climbing quality. In fact, technique along with a proper bike makes the difference.
Btw, just because a sign is up saying 45% does not mean it is that steep in reality. Italian incline signs are notoriously inaccurate. I have read 41% elsewhere, or 35%. But the inside of one of those curves does look truly terrible.
I am sure a road bike would definitely be out if the road is damp. Evon if dry the question of adhesion would have to be raised.
Hi, the curve at the inside is definately 45% but I will check this year again when I am back. Of course in average its a different story. However, the average itself is different as well. The biggest problem at Malga Palazzo (in comparison to the Nebelhorn for example) is that between KM 2 - 4 you really do not have any metre to relax. During this period, I assume average degrees of 25% - 30 %. And that´s is awesome...
45% sounds awesome and the sign of course looks frightening, too. However, 45% is really the upper-cealing and in the curves at the very inside. On the video (which was filmed after my original ascend), you see driving me inside in one curve. But, I didn´t do that when driving the original attempt.
When driving the original attempt (my girlfriend couldn´t follow with the camera although I was riding at 5 KMH), I in fact did it without dismounting. You have to drive very slowly for this.
Lovely film! I drove all he way from Holland just to do it. Scanuppia (incl castel) was one of the hardest climbs I have ever done! We plan to have a competition cycling up June 2008. I would appreciate your advise and suggestions very much if you would be so kind as to be help. Would you?
I run two forums in duch on Scanuppia as preparation for this.
Of course I like it... That´s why I drive by car all the way from Düsseldorf to Besenello. I wish I would live 1 KM away from that tremendous street!!!
Dusseldorf->Besenello only for go in Scanuppia on your MTB?
I think you are mad!! :P
I hope you have also visited the Beseno Castle (the bigger castle of Trentino) and all the zone...there's a lot of interesting things in all the Vallagarina!
If you want to go up another time, I think you can sleep in my home (Besenello) or in the refuge of the parents of my girlfriend (near the little church on the Scanuppia mountain, about at 1000m of altitude.
I might have to admit that I am indeed a little bit mad ;-) However, Scanuppia ist the most unbelievable hill in the world - I would have paid an enormous entrance fee as well!!!
It is very very nice from you to offer me a place to sleep. I hope you will not regret it... I might indeed come to Besenello another time. Maybe when it is more sunny than the last time.
Respct for your massive effort. Would you have considered riding a road bike up there? What gear ratio were you in for the majority of the climb especially at 45%? Would love to see some of the pros battle it out up there.
As I failed last year I started already in the first gear from the beginning on in order to have some room fro the very steep passages. The ration was 22/34. OK, not a very ambigous gear ratio but you have to consider my weight of 93 KG (withhout bike...).
For me it would be impossible to use a 2-fold road bike this climb. Sure, for pros it might be possible (if weight 65 - 75 KG probably - otherwise 3-fold is required I guess).
inhuman climb

eso es sobrehumano, el ciclismo profesional no puede llegar hasta esos límites pero sería una pasada poder ver una etapa en el Giro

Carrying 93 kilos of body weight up this climb makes it doubly tough. Awesome climb dude. Love the video, thanks for posting it.

Hi! thanks, but how long is exactly this hardest part you refered? I was asking about the time for all the climb, not for just a part.
MicaSoares 3 years ago
That´s´why I wrote that 1:30 is enough ;-). The figure is pretty close for the overall climb if you drive slowly.
54Sofia54 3 years ago
Question: can this be done on a road bicicle ( with proper gearing ofcourse), but I mean: is the road good enough?
Tomminightmare 3 years ago

I agree with 54sofia54 ,
but you also have to consider the way back !
Someone wrote that cycling downwards on a road bike with loads of force applied on the brakes could overheat the rims and make the tube explode .
I would suggest MTB and disk brakes .

I tried last september but with Passo Stelvio in my legs from the day before I had to climb off 200 m before the STEEEEP part ends

Wow, big respect, man! Looks like fuc**** steep and hard climb. This video makes me wanting to try it (22/34) next summer, but 45% really scares me.
8 km - is it possible to pedal it "ohne Absatz" or did you have to stop due to hard breathing or quickly beating heart, "pulsberuhigungspause"?
I guess Zoncolan is pretty flat compared to this wall...? :-)
