Actually, 'vikingjim', the "Mert" reference is from "FIBBER McGEE AND MOLLY" (which was very popular on radio in 1943)- whenever Fibber would try to make an important phone call, he'd inevitably find himself talking to "Myrt" the operator, whom you'd never hear {"Oh, is that you, Myrt? How's every little thing, Myrt?"}. Warner cartoons used a LOT of topical references....oh, yes, Daffy also asks "Von Vultur" in the phone booth, "Got a nickel, Bud?", which he gets!
