I watched both Alexander's and Ross's painting process videos. Ross's paintings are like Victorian greeting cards: very pretty and incredibly kitschy at the same time. Alexander's works may be a bit kitschy too, but they also have this "something" that really makes me think of the old painting masters.

Just to clear up some misunderstandings in this comment thread. Bill Alexander taught Bob Ross. Bill created the wet-on-wet oil painting technique, and Bob learned the technique from Bill. BR received his original painting certificaction from Bill. Bill continued to paint and teach millions. He truly was a "happy painter," and his greatest wish was for everyone to love painting.

@biggamehunter509 Actually, having watched some of Bill Alexander's episodes here on YouTube, I'm of the opinion that Bob Ross was a parody of Alexander (who was Ross' teacher). Alexander can be endearingly silly, but he's a technically sound painter. Bob Ross was more telegenic with his soothing voice, but his paintings tended to be filled with a lot more "happy accidents".

I love Bill. My dad back in the mid 80's learned to paint watching these shows on tv. I've inherited all of his old tools, due to his crippling arthritis, and I can't wait to start my first painting. I haven't done this since I was a child, I hope I'm better now than I was then.... Thank you so much for putting these online. It has brought back a lot of wonderful memories for me.

Yep, Bill's a better painter. Interesting point: Bob Ross uses/used Bill Anderson's tools! I still have and still use my old 'Mr Anderson's Magic Knife,' (the knife and several of the brushes and other materials that Bill Anderson endorsed in his shows were marketed in the late 70's through early 90's) and it's the same type Bob Ross used in his shows. Unfortunately, I'm not as good as either of them, lol...

If we are comparing to Bob Ross which i think is unfair , then this guys style is far better and his painting looks more realistic, but Bob Ross has an engaging Charisma with the Viewer which isaddictive. But i prefer this guys painting the Mountain range is amazing, BR has a more laid back style.

@trevinboy This guy is painting with the Bob Ross Method. Ross invented this Method when he was in the Air Force, stationed in Alaska. Bob loved to paint, but when he was in the service, he had to figure out a way to paint fast because he obviously didnt have time to paint all day. So, he figured out a way to paint a picture in 20 minutes and its know as the Bob Ross Method which this guy is a student of.

Bob Ross is like a Human Quaalude. I sleep better with Bob Ross painting on TV than I do Bill. With Bob's hypnotizing voice, I just sleep like a rock. But, with Bil, every once in a while he will say...."FIRE IN!!!!" Or, "YOU GOT TO HAVE DARK TO SHOW LIGHT!!!!" Words like that just wake me out of a dead sleep like a fire alarm went off or something. Artistic skill is not owned by anyone, it has evolved over centuries since homo erectus first had a full larder after a good hunting, a few spare minutes and the wife, Mrs Erectus, had nagged him enough times to redecorate the cave, pushing man to make that giant leap to discover art.

In fact some of the earliest Troglodyte artistic scribblings ever found in the remote mountains of southern godknowswhere probably hold secret paintings by the early ancestors of Bob and Bill.

I watched both Ross & Alexander growing up, and i've realized Bill is vastly superior to Bob.

What I liked about Alexander is that he had eps where he painted still-lifes & florals.

Bill even painted a city skyline in one ep and in another he painted horses (mare & foal)
