Brown Chamberlin had won the 83 RSA Chase and was thought to be Fred Winter's best chance of landing the Gold Cup since 78. Francome had ridden BHL to victory in the 83 Hennessy Gold Cup, but Tuck replaced him in the 83 King George, where they all got beat by Wayward Lad. Pitman asked Phil Tuck to ride BHL because John Francome was committed to riding Brown Chamberlin in this Gold Cup. Interestingly Francome rode BHL again at Xmas 84 to win the King George.

Phil Tuck rode BHL and Jenny Pitman trained. John Francome missed the ride as Fred Winter claimed him for the stable. BHL in the 12-months from December 1983, he won the Welsh National, Mildmay and Cazelet, Gainsborough, Gold Cup, Hennessy and King George.

Favourite chaser of all time was Brown Chamberlin. Something of a Newbury specialist having won the Hennessy Gold Cup in 1983 and beat the wonderful Wayward Lad in the Compton Chase in Feb 1984. Great shame he developed leg problems after running so well against Burrough Hill Lad in the Gold Cup. All in all Brown Chamberlin was a really good horse and I shall remember him always.

he got a reputation for moodyness, but on his day he was a crack chaser. He put up another great performance in defeat that season when Wayward Lad won the 83 King George. Some really good horses in those days: it's great they're remembered on here.

Thank you for replying to my comments about Brown Chamberlin. He never really enjoyed going right-handed and in his novice days, he was a good earner for the bookies as he would get turned over in novice hurdles. Worth mentioning that when Brown Chamberlin was retired his owner, the lovely, Mrs Basil Samuel, sent me a beautiful picture postcard of Brown Chamberlin at his beloved Newbury.

that's really nice. I thought the Samuel colours were one of the most distinctive - slightly unusual colour, not quite red, but not pink either. It's great when good horses reflect a bit of glory on old-school owners you don't hear about. The man who owns Monet's Garden seems a case in point - seems modest, but delighted to have one of the best.
