  • Great explanation, one small comment though... The main reason sailors stayed close to the coast was probably because open sea currents were not easily controlled by early sail types nor were they well understood by sailors. Basically, if a current got hold of your ship and drew it out on open sea, chances were pretty high that you would never be able to return to where you started from. Columbus managed to sail to the West Indies and back only because he knew how to make use of the currents...
