This isn't WWII where the conflict is short lived, this is something that is going to last decades.. and the amount of civil liberties which have been corroded in the last 6 years is astounding...
The idea that we are fighting a great evil, has been used many time over the centuries when governments try to take power. And what shocks me more than anything is that its the republican party, those who are supposed to be most fearful of the government, that is letting them do this.

And the real test of a democracy is how they respond when there is an emergency and people get scared.. In WW2 we responded poorly with the japanese camps, and its generally looked back at as a low point in america.
if you want a democracy, a real democracy with all the freedoms and liberties we claim, you have have to fight w/ one hand behind your back. Arbitrary arrests, indefinte detentions, no trials, rendition, and torture... they may very well be effective, but at what cost..

It does al-Qaeda good for Americans to believe they will be attacked, though they most assuredly will not be. That's the definition of "terror". It's not in the act, but in the constant apprehension of the act. You can feel terrorized if you want to, but that's how they win.

Playing right into whose hands? The people who recognize that terrorism is no longer a 'horrible nuisance' but rather a 'paralyzing influence' on our society. The people who recognize that a purely defensive posture is folly as ALL static defense can & WILL be breached? Or do you deny the threat terrorism presents to us and our posterity?

I'm not afraid of terrorists. I know that we have the will & strength to defeat them. I know that none of their objectives in this recent Baghdad escalation have been reached. I know that they are beginning to feel the strains of prolonged conflict. The only thing I'm afraid of is people who don't believe we should take on offensive posture in GWOT>

Well, good, if you're not afraid of terrorists, then they won't have won. But taking an offensive posture, I think, only leads to more attacks. Just pull out, mind your own business, and stop meddling in the affairs of other countries. Stick to your knitting, and you'll really have nothing to worry about. Until then, just don't play the terrorists' fear game.

When you look at the WHOLE NIE...you see that a precipitous withdrawal is not the answer either. I'm perfectly content with letting the Iraqis slaughter eachother for another two years. After Nov 7th our troop loses will subside as this spike is purely an attempt by our enemies to influence our national elections. Until then, we'll just have to bide our time with the beligerent Texan.

Go do an amazon search for her book, Sisters by Lynne Cheney. The description and reviews say it's basically an erotic lesbian novel. That's why she is so crazy, it's hard work suppressing all those erotic feeling.

This is proof that CNN does not have a liberal bias. Anyone with the least amount of critical thinking and effort could have torn her to shreds with that Cheney tape. The important thing to note though is that you'd see Wolf pointing at clouds on the weather segment if he pushed Lynne on the issue, that's what keeps them all in line.
