I don't think kids are as stupid as people think. I had the advantage of beig into classical music as a kid, but I've loved this film since I was a boy and I'm dying to see it again. If you let them, kids will surprise you with the things they are able to enjoy and understand.
I really liked this movie growing up. Sure the evil scene in the end scared the shit out of me when I was little, but I still enjoyed everything else. :)
This is also my favorite Disney movie as well. Too bad there wasn't more. Fantasia 2000 had some phenominal animation, but I agree with Doug. The celebrity cameos are painful.
I do not like this movie as a whole. But there are segments, like Dance of the Hours, Toccata & Fugue, and especially the Nutcracker Suite which I absolutely adore. So it's...complicated. and I think it was meant to be.
I don't remember ever watching this movie, but my mother always said that I would cry when the dinosaurs died. Even watching the clips in this video, I still don't believe her.
Usually I agree with the Nostalgia Critic 110% on his videoes. I've been watching these Disneycember vids and I must say, I feel very differently from him on almost, not all of them, but almost every Disney film. This is the strongest example, he rates it as his highest, I rate this actually as one of the lowest to me. Yes, it's artistic, and no you don't need a coherent story flowing to have a good movie, but the pacing to me was far too slow. I didn't pass out, but I came close. Repeatedly.
@nanalinda4 Oh most certainly! I only said one of the lowest. Disney definitely has far worse(even the best companies put out a ton of garbage and then try their damndest to hide it)
I HATED the movie because i watched it when i was a kid i kept fucking falling asleep. No matter how many times i tried i kept FUCKING FALLING ASLEEP. Eventually thought screw it because if i keep falling asleep i just might not be into(was forcing myself to look at it) it so i just left to play outside when we watched the damn thing. I also got tired of seeing mickey he started to piss me off.
When I was a little girl, Fantasia used to scare the living daylights outta me, only the Rite of Spring and Night on Bald Mountains because of so much intense that I didn't understood at age 4. But now that I'm a grown-up, those two segments have become my absolute favorites. It's funny that Chernobog and the big, bad T-Rex use to scare me. But now I just loved them for that. Such great suspending music and beautiful animation.
Okay, I haven't seen this film yet, and I plan to. What I have seen of it, especially in this clip, is visually stunning. I loved the white flower petals dancing, and the changing of seasons. Just brilliant.
The one problem I have with this film, however, is the now infamous Sunflower the centaur. I get that this film was made in 1940, but how the hell was that acceptable even then?
@prue6967 You should see it. It's a really good film. My only warning is that when you first start watching it, you might find it a bit sluggish at times. I won't give much away, but it has a great combination of classical music, animation and drama.
I ignored this film as a kid because like he said, it's not really geared towards me, but now that I'm older, respect classical music, atmosphere and stunning animation, just as much as I respect a film's storyline. I love 2d animation. It's like a moving painting, so just recently I saw it for the first time and throughout the entire film I literally found myself going oooooh and aww at it. It's beautiful!
Actually when Disney was in its early days, it wasn't really geared for kids in the first place. In fact Disney films had jokes meant for adults to understand and laugh at cause these have become family films and parents have to sit through it right?
I watched this movie a BUNCH of times when I was a little kid. I don't know how I was able to sit through it the whole way through when I was so young. I watched every segment. I heard the Nutcracker Suite for the first time from this movie and I didn't know it was from the Nutcracker. The first thing I think of when I hear the music from the Nutcracker are the dancing flowers, not the story.
Okay, I didn't watch ALL the segments as a little kid. Night on Bald Mountain freaked me out and I would turn the movie off when it got to that part. I would not look at Chernabog except for the back of my VHS box. He was a black devil. Ahh! I was able to see it once I turned 8 or 9 and I wasn't scared of it at all. But then Ave Maria came on and I turned the movie off again. I thought it was boring, even now that I'm older. But I notice that Doug loves that part so much. And I don't know why.
I agree that Fantasia is probably more suited towards adults. I tried to get into it, honestly, but it just didn't cut it. I think that it's quite beautiful now.
A landmark in animation (and a huge influence on the medium of music video), Disney's Fantasia is a relentlessly inventive blend of the classics with phantasmagorical images.
Don't get me wrong, this like many Disney films was what I grew up with as a kid, but the concept of this film is just weird. Taking classical orchestra music (something that kids don;t know much about or even care about) and make them into animated segments. But I think that what makes it unique. Although it does drag on a lot!
I have to say I respect Dough because he has proven he´s actually a good serious critic. I personally share his feelings on this movie: this is the best animated movie of all times and one of the best in history. It's underrated because a single stupid common concept: "if there´s no story there's no movie", wich is totally false, this movie relies more in it's graphic art, rhytmn, asecuences and music, very similar as 2001 A Space Oddisey did. It's not about entertainment, it's art.
Personally, I felt a few of them, like the Abstract section and the Rite Of Spring really dragged and left me bored, even with the fantastic animation. I do love The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the Mythology, the Dancing animals, and of course, Night Of Bald Mountain. Ave Maria dragged somewhat, but I think it was kinda the point, since it was rather meditative and calming to counter the deranged Bald Mountain part. Overall, it's a fantastic and influential film, and I still appreciate it a lot.
I remember always skipping over all the talking and abstract work to get straight to the fantasy sequences as a kid. XD I loved the part with the horse girls meeting the horse boys
This is a film that I highly respect, considering how influential it became, but don't personally enjoy. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Night On Bald Mountain/Ave Maria" are the only segments that grabbed me and still do. The rest feels like overly-cutesy filler. Sure, the animation is superb, but you need more than great animation to invest someone.
This is simply my opinion and I respect everyone else's. For those who love "Fantasia", that's awesome.
Fantasia is probably one of the best examples where a movie that wasn't so hot at the time became so beloved in the future. Watching it again recently as an adult, I do appreciate it a lot more. As a kid, only the Sorcerer's Apprentice, The Rite of Spring, and the dancing animals piqued my interest. Now, I can fully appreciate scenes like Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria.
I'm hoping he won't be too harsh on Fantasia 2000.
The night on bald mountain sequence scared the hell out of me when I was a kid! But I actually loved the rest of the movie especially The Sorcerer's Apprentice sequence.
I legitimately do not remember any Ave Maria part playing within Fantasia. But then again, who could blame me? It apparently came RIGHT after the Night on Bol Mountain and its graphic scenes, how COULD I remember a peaceful sounding musical number coming right after?
@ConstantineChernabog Because at the time, it was super expensive, shunned by many theaters and didn't make enough money compared to some. Sure, it was a pioneer in the use of sound and pictures, and could have changed the animated world forever, but if you look back at it now, it's just so radically different from their "traditional movie" that it might sometimes get lost. Besides, as Doug mentioned, it's not exactly a kids movie, which makes it both underrated and ghettoized at the same time.
@ConstantineChernabog The film isn't underrated in the sense that nobody knows what it is. A lot of Disney fans (including myself) really love this film. It's just that the mainstream forgets about it. Especially with the rise of Disney Channel and their teen stars and that piece of satanic crap High School Musical. I don't hate them personally, I just hate when people associate them with Disney. Disney should re-release this film (and 2000) in theaters and IMAX.
@ConstantineChernabog Continued from my last comment. If they release Fantasia in theaters again, it could bring people into it again. With the sucsess of recent Disney re-releases like the Lion King, Disney ordered more classic Disney films to be re-released. They got Beauty and the Beast and the Little Mermaid slated for releases. If those and future re-releases do well, then Disney may actually do a Fantasia re-release. The sooner that happens the better.
@ConstantineChernabog I think it's because people don't really understand the true beauty of it. Unlike the others, it doesn't really have a true plot. It's just a bunch of shorts thrown together, using BEAUTIFUL imagery and classical music.
Aww Fantasia. The origin of My Little Pony.

And the nipples! Both the centaurs and the harpies had nipples. That's a little awkward for a kid to say the least.
