I've searched for the video of this sign-off for years, it's the greatest TV sign-off ***ever*** - if anyone turns this video up it would be a spectacular YouTube treasure.
But when America sang "Lonely People", it showed video footage of the Moon Landing, the planting of the flag, and the departure. At the end of the video, it showed a baby in a crib, with a sillouete of the parents standing over it, panning out as the song ended. Memories of my childhood. *sigh*
I remember this as a child (born and raised in East NC). I remember while the narrator was announcing the station information, there was this gigantic white "12" that stretched from the top to the bottom of the screen on a black background. Scared me as a child for some odd reason. LOL.
i am amazed that you were able to get that kind of reception with an indoor antenna, out here you're doing fine if you can get reception in the mountains with an outdoor antenna
LOL! (I live in new bern, about one mile from Glenbernie Drive (now its Glenbernie Road!) ) It's still Channel 12 but it doesn't "sign off" anymore. lol god August 1983... I wasn't even born until 1987! Cool to hear it though, thanks for that!
Actually I think what happend when the station went to the test pattern instead of the high pitched tone that stations often do they were airing feed from a local radio station
Wow. No Star Spangled Banner, not even America the Beautiful, but... Lonely People? I know usually stations sign off with a song about America, but never a song from the band America. Weird. Would have loved to see the visual for that one.

@oldshowfanatic77 I remember when I was little, seeing a blue '12' zooming in with a black background.

My gosh, I grew up with WCTI. When I was a little boy, I was jumping up and down with excitement, waiting for "American Bandstand" to come on.

No no no! I recorded it off a TV with a tape recorder. I didn't have a VCR yet. I provided the color bars 25 years later for this YouTube video.
