@shipcool , The native American peoples were called Indians by the first white "discoverer", Christopher Columbus, when he landed here in 1492 and thought he had found a route to India. I suppose the natives kept the name after the whites kept on using it; the Africans brought here were called "Negroes" by the Spanish settling here, and that name stuck, as well.

1. Columbus was trying to find the shortest route to the West Indies. He mistook the new world ( America) for the West Indies. He saw the people and called them Indians and the name stayed.
2. Indian in spanish is Indio. Indio means God's people.
Some people like to be called Indian and other's like to be called Native Americans. It depends on the person I guess.
