I've been watching WWF/WWE since I was a kid (ie: 30 years ago or so) and there will ALWAYS be a special place in my heart for Akeem...
I can't stop grinning when I see his 'fist pumping' actions, he cracked me up big time.
Apparently Akeem was supposed to be one of the entrants of the 'Gimmick Battle Royal' they had about 4 (or so?) years ago, but apparently he lost weight and the Akeem suit didn't fit him anymore, so he went as the One Man Gang instead. Sad day, I was hoping for Akeem
lol @ Slick saying "Ohhh. I misunderstood. You mean THAT Ted DiBiase. I thought you was talkin bout my HOMEBOY Ted where I get my SHOES shined."
Funny thing is, that excuse MIGHT have WORKED, except for the fact that Mooney NEVER SAID "Ted DiBiase" by name. He said "The Million Dollar Man." So there's NO WAY Slick could use that excuse and act like he got confused. lol.
Big Boss Man was fat when he 1st came wwf but he shed alot weight and he was the quickest big guy in the ring fans loved him and never held gold but he should be in the H.O.F soon if KoKo B. Ware is in Boss Man,Jake the Snake, Macho Man,Owen Hart,Bull Dog,Warrior,L.O.D. and Paul Bearer should get in.
AS A KID I THOUGHT CHANGING THE ONE MAN GANG INTO AKEEM THE AFRICAN DREAM WAS THE FUNNIEST THING I EVER SEEN UNTILL LATER WHEN I STARTED PAYING CLOSER ATTENTION TO THE FINER DETAILS OF WRESTLING & YOU GOTTA ADMITT.... IT'S ENTERTAINMENT........
And the most Racist matchup in the History of the WWF, they actually had a Simba/Akeem fued planned in 1990 I think it was, but Akeem left before it could go down, LOL
They were also on opposing teams for the 1990 Survivor Series: Simba on "The Alliance" with Nikolai Volkoff and the Bushwhackers; Akeem on "The Mercenaries" with Sgt. Slaughter and the Orient Express. Both were replaced by Tito Santana and Boris Zhukov respectively.
@fivebearrugs Really? I didn't know that? I knew Akeem was replaced by Zhukov, but I didn't realize that Simba was an original member of The Alliance team, but was replaced by Tito? That's news to me, thanks for the info. Peace.
There might even be a promo ad for it in the November 1990 issue of WWF Magazine. My first ever issue was *December* 1990, and they have the full report in there, with the replacements (Haku/Rude and Santana and Zhukov) Photoshopped (yes, I know there was no PS in 1990...I think) in the team photos.
@fivebearrugs Wow, the first issue I ever had was October 1990 w/ LOD on the front cover. What a coincidence, Ha, I don't remember seeing that team photo in the November issue,or else I never got that one, can't see now, cuz sadly I lost every mag that I had collected from 90 to early 95, I quit watcing until late 96, then started up buying them again w/ my brother who was into it by that time as well. It sucks to lose all those mags.
I love Akeem the African Dream! He's such an off the wall character. And that dance he does right troughout is hysterical......I wonder how many takes of this interview it took before they could get through without cracking up laughing??? I commented this to someone the other day that each of the wrestlers at this point in time up until around 2000 had their own gimmick and they were distinct from everyone else whereas now some wrestlers seem almost interchangable.
Watch this with the sound off and pretend the Akeem and Boss Man are high out of their mind on meth or tripping balls, preferably if you are high yourself.
one of my favourite tag teams ever - they just seemed so scary to a little kid!

@CQ1981331
I have to totally agree. Akeem is one of my greatest 'guilty pleasures' from my early WWF following days.
That stuff he did with his hands, and his 'jive' promos he cut as Akeem was definitely LOL material.
I can't think of anybody in recent memory who makes me laugh as much as Akeem's shtick did back in the day.
This promo itself higlights the awesomeness that was 'Akeem'...

JeffTheFutureJaros 2 years ago
Nonono, a triple threat match with Akeem, Saba Simba and Kamala! :)
It would be SO wrong and SO un-PC and just a wee bit racist...which would automatically make it the greatest match in the history of the WWF/E :)
