@jester99sch i disagree, i'd say he definitely invented the true personal computer. what would you say was before the apple. there was stuff like the altair, but that was a true hobbyist machine. you didn't buy an altair unless you were interested in circuitry and software. the apple was the first one that people really started buying that was used by the whole family as a tool or for entertainment.
@kingcrimson234 The Apple 1 still had to be wired, programmed and set up to use. it was a hobbiest machine as well as the Altair..
The Apple II debuted April 1977 right after the Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer was released in Feb.
The Tandy TRS-80 was a joint venture between Tandy Corporation of Fort Worth, Texas and Motorola Semiconductor, Inc. of Austin. So your claim that Apple was the first out of the box, and tv ready home PC was inaccurate!
The guy at the end was pretty hilarious too talking about the LISA and NeXT "we'll be booting them on film you will see these things working maybe, maybe not they might blow up. cool."
@javier29m90 No Xerox invented the "WIMP" (Window/icon/mouse/pointer) interface that apple kinda lifted to use on the mac (and then copied again by microsoft). The first personal computer was infact the Altair, but it was an ungainly box of knobs and dials and was really only for engineers. What woz invented was the first personal computer that anyone could use.
@MrShayneOneill When Xerox decided not to build computers, and cancelled the Alto, several of those engineers went to work for Apple. Apple also paid Xerox for the rights to GUI. Apple didn't "lift" anything from Xerox, they paid for it. Microsoft was outright theft.
Agree with the other comments that Woz is the true creator of the Apple computers. imagine the vision and ideas that would have to be hand drawn into schematics then go to the electronics store and buy the other parts needed and build it all on a bench in your garage. are there any pioneers like this man left?
Certainly Woz is a genius and deserves far more recognition than he gets. But those who dismiss Jobs as merely the "face of Apple" or a "marketer" are underestimating, I think, the genius of growing a company and leading it to success. Woz's ideas were obviously brilliant and innovative, but would he have turned Apple into the most valuable tech company in the world? No, Jobs did that as a brilliant chief executive.
@dcolby5 Sort of reminds me a bit about how it works in film. You always hear about the director, but never about the guy who wrote the script. I guess Steve's the director, but Woz wrote the script. Without the script, theres nothing to shoot. But for a film you need genius in both roles. Jobs is such an interesting person. By all acounts he is bit a meglomanic obsessive. Yet he took the time to help my business once , after one of his products failed and I emailed him. How many CEOs do that!
woz makes all the hard work!! he is the real genius jobs was only the image or the face of APPLE however he makes an excellent job in the marketing part and introducing the computers to the consumers!!!

Steve jobs haters are so funny/dense... We all love the woz but he'd still be stuck in that garage if it werent for SJ. Techs don't get that marketing is the essential link that made the PC USEFUL. It's just a box of wires without form or purpose otherwise.
@rockbandmidi You're mostly right, but I think the "Jobs haters" out there are simply annoyed by all the credit SJ gets, his ego, his lack of engineering skills, and the fact that Woz (the genius behind all of it) in contrast is such a nice person and can actually write software himself. People are turned off a bit, the same way people get annoyed when a "manager" "manages" the people who are actually doing the work. It's the same kind of bullshit.
@rayalvarado2010 It's really that engineering nerds can lash out at Jobs, but not at their own manager whom they hate. Jobs is the marketing genius behind it all, and marketing is the magic that makes companies. There are geeks here on youtube just as bright and inventive as Woz.. but without focus, they're just a bunch of" doc brown" types who'll never achieve anything much outside of their shacks/youtube. Jobs gave birth to apple, reinvented with mac, saved it with imac, and now iOS..
@rockbandmidi I think many of these engineers are idealist and would prefer to live in a world more like the "Garden of Eden." A place where we live in peace and harmony, share our toys and help each other in all that we do. Jobs took ideas and made them into a company. So what? If it were that important to Woz, he would have stayed at Apple. He's an idealist. Jobs was focused on making a company while Woz was focused on discovering the power of computers. Two different people.
@rayalvarado2010 unfortunately capitalism drives innovation by paving the way with cash. Without cash woz would have been parting things together..slowly..for years.. happy doing it, of course, but we'd be YEARS behind without jobs. Jobs created the PC(product), which inspired IBM (in the form of oh crap, we need some of that) which in turn, drove gates to rip off that little company to license DOS for PCs.. which then helped create the clone market and exponential growth/progress of intel.
@rockbandmidi I saw in a movie that the owner of DOS was quite happy to sell his operating system for $50,000.00, his mistake was to sell it and not license it.
@rockbandmidi Jobs created a company, but without jobs the computer itself would have still evolved the same way, although maybe at a slower rate. He created the PC market... we all know that... but someone's meaning/purpose/success doesn't have to be judged by whether or not they can make money from what they do. People like Woz created the personal computer. Jobs used it to change the world. It's doesn't really have anything to do with focus at all.
@rockbandmidi Without Jobs, I think we can assume that Woz (and the rest of the homebrew community) would have ended up with something more than just a box of wires without form or purpose. Technological evolution has been taking place since the beginning of time. It didn't just start when Steve Jobs was 20 yrs old.
@rayalvarado2010 As a PS.. I'll mention that without steveo.... android OS would look more like symbian... yuk.. competition drives innovation.. without clones, IBM would have been selling the 8086 4.7Mhz PC for 10 years :)
I still like my PC more than my mac... but my ipod.. ooh baby.. true love..
@rockbandmidi@rockbandmidi Not true! IBM didn't invent or sell the 8088 processor that went into the first IBM PCs. That credit goes to Intel which began making chips for the x86 architecture from the get go. The more advanced processors got (8088, 80286, 80386) the more, the faster MS-DOS/Windows was able to develop. The 80286 was released about a year after the IBM PC was first released. It had new features such as protected mode which allowed multitasking, better memory mgt..
I know many ppl think Bill Gates was wack but Gates wrote Basic! If Woz, Gates and Jobs had worked together imagine what we would have interms of gadgets today?

Steve Wozniak is a legend. Who says no one knows of him. I corresponded with him briefly in the mid 90s. He wasnt impressed with the fact that my first Apple was a Hong Kong made clone. Also made some comment about how he doesnt like politics! Pity.
Correction - I didnt mean it as "end up as a teacher" but rather eventually continued on a path that lead him to be a great teacher! I mis-wrote that and it reads awful. Sorry, but yeah, Woz not a geek!
I got his autobiography the other day started reading it today, he seems like a very nice person as well as a genius! I'm nearly finished the book! It's a good read!
I'm not an Apple 'follower' in the sense of religious styled fans, but I have to say, the history of Apple computers is the only one that really grips me and is interesting. Maybe because they had set models due to building software and putting together the hardware. Not a mish mash of components that we know today due to MS's licensing tactic.

Absolutely. But Woz is a geek (a geek is a nerd who gets things done). Because he built a computer HE would want, and because he's so passionate about this stuff, the first Apple computer came about.. but APPLE COMPUTER, and later, Apple Inc, came about because of Steve Jobs. Woz was the inventor, Steve was the businessman.
@ORUPRANKSTAZ I dont think Woz is/was a geek. I think he was a brilliant inventor, man who at the core of his passion was this apparent need to teach and show. I think thats why he ended up as a teacher. I find myself loving the show part of computing to others.
Geeks are those that visit Engadgets/Gismods 100 times a day and find lost iPhones and don't return them but show them off, those are geeks.
@imanerd36 True, but this is just one of MANY MANY sad stories of lack of proper recognition like this in the computer (or any industry) that will really piss you off. Someone should write a book about things like this. Probably nobody would buy it, ironically.
@imanerd36 I love Woz, and he is a genius. The reason Jobs gets so much credit, is mostly due to the fact he was the one who pioneered the Macintosh. While everyone was working on the Apple Lisa, the apple board of directors forced Jobs off of the Lisa project (where Woz was working) and Jobs decided to build his own, which he called the macintosh. When they both were released, the Apple Lisa plummeted, and the Macintosh became the staple of apple.
@imanerd36 To be completely honest, without Jobs' marketing genius, Woz' engineering genius would have gone unappreciated. Had to have both for Apple to have worked.
To me, the most underappreciated guys ever to have worked at Apple, were Andy Hertzfeld and Burrell Smith.
I have an Apple II that i bought from ebay in 2004. it was either 35 or 45 bucks, and the seller also sold me a matching monitor for it for 50. total spent 85-95 dollars. now its worth a few hundred because its mint
People who build computers today are like children playing with blocks. Buy & slap some parts together and you're done. You can't say that about Woz. He designed and built computers old school style. He has my respect and thanks for his genius and contributions.
@imprezaver4 WOW do you have the history wrong..To my knowledge Apple never bought the patent from Xerox PARC Labs.they did have access to PARC for 3 days in exchange for 100K shares of stock...IBM came to MS asking for an operating system ..at the time MS only wrote languages...MS bought an OS based on CPM from Seattle Computing rewrote it then licensed it to IBM ...what part of that do you see as tricking IBM?
Wozniak is a great man! He always look very humble and gentle for me, sometimes I think that he doesnt realized how important he is in the history of humanity, his little portable creation only placed the world in another stage of evolution and developement...
LOL, I have one of those super rare black Apple ][s you see in the video... Apple was so small, they had to rebrand them and sell them through a 3rd party bigger educational supplier. Its got the Bell-G key like in the video, and no BACKSPACE key. That's right, no backspace. From memory, you had to do a control combination to delete a character. Inside is spartan, and one spare chip is taped on the power supply to go into a socket should you not install a card or something.
While this is very cool, it's a little depressing. I remember when Apple was on top of the world. Apple now controls only 5-10% of the world computer market. The rest is all PC.
>Apple now controls only 5-10% of the world computer market.
Apple is selling more OS X machines -- Macs + the PDAs -- per quarter than *all* the Apple II's it ever sold (5M).
OS X 10.6 vs. Windows 7 . . . hmmm, Difficult to say who is ahead, or that Apple's smaller market share impacts its ability to deliver compelling technologies. Apple made $1.5B last quarter NET, which is enough to hire 30,000 software engineers LOL.
Your post displays the perfect illustration of Apple Elitism that makes normal people loathe Corksucking Iceholes who are silly enough to pride themselves solely on what electronics they buy. LOL. But don't worry, *you're* still special because you obviously own an Apple. And that makes you such a better person. That, and the fact that you probably read poetry and drink cappuccinos riding public transportation on your way to your non-profit job. LOL.
I also own an xbox 360, and a nice Vista box in a Lian Li case.
The fact that Apple is still finding success making nice computers shouldn't set you off so. It's just a computer, man.
Back in 1989 I coulda "saved" $2000 or so buying an Acer clone instead of that $6000 IIcx system, but the Mac was the better long-term value in meeting my needs in a computer.
Same thing holds today. This doesn't make me special or a better person. Just happier.
my first comp was a tsr-80,then i got a tandy 1000,then to a ibm 386 i upgraded to a 486,right before the internet came out, then i got a bit retro and got a old commado 64,but once internet was full blown,i havent looked back to dos since
The real person that had always passion for what he did and that primarily wanted to invent personal computers was Steve Jobs, Steve Jobs forever! Apple Rocks!
This so called "Caveman" SINGLE HANDEDLY created the personal computer from scratch and by hand, every step of the way. Strange, yes, but, no fool. Give a genius his due. I assume you are not accessing YouTube through a network terminal. Stick to Kenny G, jazzman!

I hate how few people know who Woz is when he did all the hard work. Jobs just sold it and gets all the credit. YOU GO WOZ!
imanerd36 2 years ago 90
@imanerd36 True, but this is just one of MANY MANY sad stories of lack of proper recognition like this in the computer (or any industry) that will really piss you off. Someone should write a book about things like this. Probably nobody would buy it, ironically.
deltaray3 1 year ago
@imanerd36 I love Woz, and he is a genius. The reason Jobs gets so much credit, is mostly due to the fact he was the one who pioneered the Macintosh. While everyone was working on the Apple Lisa, the apple board of directors forced Jobs off of the Lisa project (where Woz was working) and Jobs decided to build his own, which he called the macintosh. When they both were released, the Apple Lisa plummeted, and the Macintosh became the staple of apple.
patrickjgates 1 year ago
@imanerd36 To be completely honest, without Jobs' marketing genius, Woz' engineering genius would have gone unappreciated. Had to have both for Apple to have worked.
To me, the most underappreciated guys ever to have worked at Apple, were Andy Hertzfeld and Burrell Smith.

I have an Apple II that i bought from ebay in 2004. it was either 35 or 45 bucks, and the seller also sold me a matching monitor for it for 50. total spent 85-95 dollars. now its worth a few hundred because its mint

My Apple II's still work and I have a few of the Apple II+'s, an Apple IIe and an Apple IIgs.
All work fine, with the exception of a few disk drives that are out of alignment....but they will still boot up some 30+years later.

Woz was the bomb, as the kids would say. If it wasn't for him and Jobs I probably would have never gotten interested in computers.

I would love to meet the Woz some day.

People who build computers today are like children playing with blocks. Buy & slap some parts together and you're done. You can't say that about Woz. He designed and built computers old school style. He has my respect and thanks for his genius and contributions.

Woz's the guy who puts computer into homes.
Jobs the one who bought the mouse pointer
patent from Xerox and puts it onto the screens.
The only thing Microsoft knew was how to copy
it. IBM used to look down on home-computing,
calling it 'irrelevant'. IRRELEVANT? Think Again
Microsoft bought an OS off a nerd called DOS
and tricked IBM into buying it. Both still looks like idiots today. Go home, Microsoft & IBM...
imprezaver4 2 years ago 3
@imprezaver4 WOW do you have the history wrong..To my knowledge Apple never bought the patent from Xerox PARC Labs.they did have access to PARC for 3 days in exchange for 100K shares of stock...IBM came to MS asking for an operating system ..at the time MS only wrote languages...MS bought an OS based on CPM from Seattle Computing rewrote it then licensed it to IBM ...what part of that do you see as tricking IBM?

LOL, I have one of those super rare black Apple ][s you see in the video... Apple was so small, they had to rebrand them and sell them through a 3rd party bigger educational supplier. Its got the Bell-G key like in the video, and no BACKSPACE key. That's right, no backspace. From memory, you had to do a control combination to delete a character. Inside is spartan, and one spare chip is taped on the power supply to go into a socket should you not install a card or something.
cobrachoppergirl 3 years ago 2
While this is very cool, it's a little depressing. I remember when Apple was on top of the world. Apple now controls only 5-10% of the world computer market. The rest is all PC.
northwestmike 3 years ago
>Apple now controls only 5-10% of the world computer market.
Apple is selling more OS X machines -- Macs + the PDAs -- per quarter than *all* the Apple II's it ever sold (5M).
OS X 10.6 vs. Windows 7 . . . hmmm, Difficult to say who is ahead, or that Apple's smaller market share impacts its ability to deliver compelling technologies. Apple made $1.5B last quarter NET, which is enough to hire 30,000 software engineers LOL.
>The rest is all PC.
I'd rather be the best than be the rest.
tachikaze222 3 years ago
Your post displays the perfect illustration of Apple Elitism that makes normal people loathe Corksucking Iceholes who are silly enough to pride themselves solely on what electronics they buy. LOL. But don't worry, *you're* still special because you obviously own an Apple. And that makes you such a better person. That, and the fact that you probably read poetry and drink cappuccinos riding public transportation on your way to your non-profit job. LOL.
northwestmike 3 years ago
. . . wow, ad-hom much?
I also own an xbox 360, and a nice Vista box in a Lian Li case.
The fact that Apple is still finding success making nice computers shouldn't set you off so. It's just a computer, man.
Back in 1989 I coulda "saved" $2000 or so buying an Acer clone instead of that $6000 IIcx system, but the Mac was the better long-term value in meeting my needs in a computer.
Same thing holds today. This doesn't make me special or a better person. Just happier.
