  • What a great speech, and an amazing inspiration, even after all of these years

  • why shout.. you can say it calmly...

  • look at the cop video taping the people in the protest.. if u protest u are put into the Homeland Security database and every other database of the police state..is that the hallmark of a free society ?? or of a police state in the making.. I blame the cops for their cooperation in the creation of this new police state known as the imperial US.. they are the enablers of the oppression by the state ..they are the new brown shirts the new fascist..don't be fooled by the uniform that changes

  • FULLERTON IN FLAMES

  • This movie of course is for the open minded and brave indiviuals who actually think, all those who read from a notepad should go and do another joint and only dream of being this cool.

Mario Savio in his day was not afraid, at present times he is shit scared!

Don't do the talk, get out there and find the truth for once...

  • You know what pisses me off? The fact he has to read from a bit of paper!

If your that hardcore then it's in your head, a passion!

I hate these fake students pretending just to have some cool status...get real and get stuck in you morons, see how the real world is and stop milking your mum and dad for your pocket money!

It might seem corny to most dumb people, but watch the movie "Vendetta 2006", MAYBE YOU CAN THE GROW UP AND SEE HOW THE WORLD WORKS!

  • just because that's not Mario Savio doesn't discredit this. it is stated clearly Mario Savio FSM 45th Ann. it's a speech given in commemoration of Savio's epic speech. Prof. Muller makes a great point, and if you had paid attention, you would understand the point was, as Mario Savio himself had advocated back in the 60's, Flux made that point as well. It isn't who is speaking, it's having the decency to let them speak. Without that, you'd be just as bad as those silencing your voice of protest.

  • seems like a bunch of people that didn't understand the speech to me. His speech was only a few and powerful words that simply represent doing something about what's happening yourself. Not some long speech that these people go on about "blah blah blah blah" and then "OUUUUUUUOUOUU" is all I hear like a bunch of frat punks.

  • @suckmeballsalot

Exactly my point! Stupid students trying to milk some status from an honest man who saw the bullshit in our government even back then......

  • who is this guy

  • Notice it wasn't the comment about hypothetically inviting a nazi to berkley but the prospect of inviting a republican.

  • just so you all know, that is Professor Richard Muller, NOT MARIO SAVIO. Savio passed away in 1996. 1996. way to be well-informed....

  • you guys all realize that is NOT Mario Savio speaking and that he passed away in 1996, right? Just wondering, since so many of you have written "let Mario talk"...

  • Well that was depressingly ironic. If only that kid also understood the truth of his education.

  • That kid is such a FUCKASS! Like that guy said, Shut the fuck up and let Mario Savio speak!!!

  • Shut the fuck up and let Mario Savio talk.

Shouting out "WHO'S UNIVERSITY?! OUR UNIVERSITY!" only gives you a false perception that you are truly exercising your right to free speech. Mario said himself that if even a republican politician went to Berkeley they wouldn't be listened to.

Personally I dislike Right Wing Conservatives but I would give them the respect and the decency of their right to free speech and hear them out. Learn a lesson from Mario, UC Berkeley. Start to act your age.

  • @Roshby54 finally someone picked up on the irony of that that kid interrupting a much needed history lesson. ;~)

  • @Roshby54 Mario Savio died in 1996 Personally I dislike people's opinions. Not the people who harbor those opinions.

  • @Roshby54 I give this comment a full thumbs-down because Mario Savio Died in 1996--that is not him speaking here in 2009. You can read about Savio on Wikipedia.

  • @accesstoknowledge

Oof that is my mistake. I take full responsibility for that, however my comment still stands that free speech isn't just about chanting to give yourself the impression that you're standing for "your rights." It's about having the liberty to speak your mind and be heard, not just by one party (in this case the arrogant Berkeley students) but by all, despite how badly you might dislike them.

Thanks for pointing that out though, I just learned something new =)

  • @accesstoknowledge

are you a redditor by chance?

Also that is completely my bad on the incorrect name, I was just astounded at the idiots who thought they were truly exercising their freedom of speech while denying others their rights.

  • Berkeley California... I love you <3

  • If Mario Savio could watch this video of all these liberal kids that just want something to whine about he would vomit! He quit the Free Speech Movement because of ignorant people like this. If you were gonna honor the man and his legacy you could have did it tastefully. However, I wouldn't expect much more from a bunch of California hippies that no nothing about work nor life in general! Go hug a tree!

  • @Phantom4Ever85 finally someone with a common sense.. amen!

  • TO SAVE FACE...HOW LOW CAN YOU GO..

  • @SaypheZonE wow

  • @saveadrum77: It's also about how apathy is just as big a problem. By not speaking out, we're "passively tak[ing] part" (as Savio puts it). Putting the wider Free Speech Movement aside for a moment, this speech was about the processes in the educational system. The students were treated as income, part of a process, then moved to corporate giants and working the rest of their lives. It's an issue that is coming more apparent in the UK at the moment with the student protests over university fees.

  • War? Not a problem. Debt? Not a problem. Torture? Not a problem. Rising tuition? Big problem.

Does anyone else see something horribly wrong here?

  • @AntiFed1791 I see something wrong there. War IS a problem. Debt IS a problem. Torture IS a problem. Rising tuition is most certainly a problem. Nobody in their right mind ever claimed such things as war as non-problems, because, after all, to claim otherwise, one would have to NOT be in their right mind. Needless to say.

  • I looked up this guy because of the song wretches and kings lol

  • Can someone give me a quick synopsis of what the "bodies upon the gears" speech meant?

  • @saveadrum777 briefly.. it means that sometimes you just have to get up off your lazy ass and DO something even if that means putting yourself in harms way. otherwise you are complicit in the atrocities that piss you off. Also, that all it really takes to change the system is for individuals to stop using/relying/expecting or GIVING ANY SUPPORT to that system. ... it's being both the stick and the hand that shoves it into the spokes of the bicycle galled status coup.

  • @FluxRostrum Very well said.

  • @FluxRostrum I agree with your sentiment, but I think more specifically, he is speaking about tactics for civil disobedience. One of which is to actively violate a law or policy or process in non-violent protest: in this case by occupying space in sproul hall in order to disrupt business and issue demands for policies that permit space and time for student organizing around political issues, e.g. the Viet Nam war.

  • @FluxRostrum excellent summary of the idea that you gave in response to saveadrum777... you gotta lay yourself on the gears and levers! POWERFUL.

  • @saveadrum777 It means to stand up to an oppressive system, whether it be government or otherwise,to in effect force your own liberation

  • you guys at the university should explode your speakers with wretches and kings !!!!!

  • because of linkin park's wretches & kings,i watched this

  • Linkin Park - Wretches And kings,. HELLZ YEA

  • @emContradiction lol yeh thats why i watched this

  • @emContradiction Fear Factory as well..

  • mario savio was a great speaker... the operation of the machine. the military industrial complex. balls. these guys could take a lesson in conviction

  • how bout you fight for against universities putting so much investment into athletes and not enough in educational programs.

  • @vitorshaolin I'm coming across this in future time, but I read it as if it's new. I agree with you about the fight against unfair advancements due athletes. But then again, we're talking about a super melding machine which is at the heart of slavery. The University. Welcome to your illusion of freedom.

  • That is heavy!

Thank U so very much for putting this on youtube!

  • thanks for posting!

  • Thanks for posting this - EXCELLENT

History holds the key to the future - this is a good example of that

  • Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I have to agree Mr. Savios is right. Whether we agree or not, the views of all, especially the opinions we disagree the most, should be expressed. Censorship by any means is unjustified if the right is a guarantee.

  • That last speaker was NOT Mario Savio, but a UCB physics professor who participated in the free speech movement.
