  • im from Maryland and i know we say certain words differently, which i didn't know until i went to an out of state college and people would always point out what i say different but i've never heard someone talk like that here...

  • ????Didn't realize we had an accent????

  • Lived in Montgomery and Prince Georges County all my life. I use to think Marylanders didn't have an accent but Baltimore people def have a accent as well as some people I went to school with that lived on the Eastern Shore. Although it didn't really sound anything like the one in this video.

So I guess Marylanders do have a slight accent except for those that live in the counties bordering DC? lol

  • @sonatagirl07 I grew up in Montgomery County then went to school in New England and everyone pointed out that I said words funny.

  • I have never once sounded like that... I also dont know anyone that does

  • Born in Annapolis, Live in Baltimore. Don't talk like this. At all... And I have never had any of my out of town friends or relatives comment on an "accent" Fuckk off 30 Rock

  • lol true. half of my friends sound british and were not.

  • I was born and raised in southern Maryland and so many people say I sound like this. I don't see it, but I guess it's true? they always said I sounded British and southern at the same time which I never thought was possible. but I guess so..?

  • @Andieyounkin I've heard people say I sound southern, but never british. My accent is on the verge of non-rhotic though so I suppose that british-y.

  • @Andieyounkin My friends think I sound British and Southern too! Oh my god I'm not the only one? :')

  • I'm from northern MD but go down to school in Southern MD and I definitely know a LOT of people from both places that talk like this. I think everyone that is saying they have never heard it have just never realized that a lot of MDers talk like this.

  • @estschro The hell do you go to school in Southern Maryland for if you live in Northern Maryland?

  • @Oricelis That's no unheard of if the poster goes to private school. I lived in Calvert County and went to school in St. Mary's (which are both in Southern Maryland), but there were students who had 2 hour commutes a day because they were from the DC area.

  • @LizzieHanyou I suppose you're right. Or he might mean college, he could be going to college at St. Mary's.

  • im from st marys county the most redneck part of the state and we dont talk like that

  • @xxxcampcounselorxxx Hell Yeah St Mary's. Calvert here, of emu-shooting fame, we also don't talk like that. Theres no emphasis on the Os that I can find. Plus, it's not pronounced "Mari-land", its pronounced "Marlin" or "Marilin". Everybody knows that. Mari-land is okay that's how they say it in DC, but it drives me nuts when people say it "Mareee-layund".

  • This is one of the weirdest accents I've heard. I can't speak for any other part of Maryland, but we definitely sound nothing like that in Southern Maryland.

Although, it may just be the way it was done. Sounds a lot more British to me than anything I've heard in the states.

  • @xObscurexOmenx I'm from Southern Maryland as well. Never heard someone talk like that.

  • I've never heard a Marylander talk like that, ever in my life.

  • Now most of the country thinks we talk like that :(

  • My friend says her o's like that

  • I don't talk like that lol, and I've grown up in Maryland. Anyone could talk like that, honestly.

  • I see what she's trying to do, but the actual Maryland accent would be like this.

To say "Overshoppe is Now Open on Highland Road", pronounce:

"Avershoppe is Nah Apen on Hollin Rade"

  • Huh? Do people in Baltimore talk like that maybe? I live in MD and I would assume that person was from some northern city.

  • @Oricelis no, like you'll meet people from Glen Burnie or Anne Arundel country, and a lot of them sound like that.

  • HEY I DONT SOUND LIKE THAT! i dont think...

  • I'm a baltimoron and am very familiar with the sobo accent. Luv it. Thankfully though I live in fells where it is minimal. Dundalk Walmart is famous for it!! Hun.

  • If you think this accent doesn't exist just go to essex or dundalk

  • Julianne Moore is such a talented actress, the accent is perfect,

  • @kristbjorg999 What the hell are you talking about? I've lived in Maryland for 17 years and I've never heard anyone talk like that in Maryland or anywhere else.

  • " I know, let's find some people who talk differently. Then let's badly imitate them and put a whole scene in our show to make fun of them." -30 Rock

  • thats Baltimore and anne arundel, eastern shore....sometimes your hear it around D.C. but not as much, its mostly Baltimore

  • I know I have an accent because she didn't seem to have an accent the first time I watched it

  • Hey, I don't sound like that!! My brother, and a couple other people I know, do that but the rest of us marylanders point it out to them because it sounds really weird.

  • you guys deount kneouw what yoor teowkin abeout

  • i grew up near DC, so i have more of a DC accent, and then when i came to school in baltimore i realized everyone stretched out their o's more. maryland has a lot of different accents though.... this is just a more rural maryland accent

  • I grew up in Maryland, spent most of my career in SoCal, now back in MD. Yes, we do stretch our O's. 30Rock parodies everyone/everything -- so even if it's exaggerated -- just enjoy it!

  • Do you pronounce Bowie, Bow-E or Bouie? I wasn't born in MD but have lived here since I was 9 and yes we do have a slightly different way about the O sounds. As in dog, I noticed that I say duhg. I live in MoCo.

  • "oh, that accent is idiotic"

    I love irony.

  • Reminds me of an early John Waters movie.

  • wtf is this? i'm from baltimore county and no one here even remotely sounds like that.

  • @hillsluver really? i grew up near dc and now go to school @ UMBC and you all definitely stretch out your o's

  • Lmfao i dont think anyone in maryland sounds like that. The white people (except baltimorians) speak "standard american" and the black people (in pg county atleast) talk with a dc accent.

  • @skullz9000 Come down where I live (South of the bridge)... You'll here it! It's a whole different world down here!

  • @dreotingle lol oh wow ! From what i've experienced, B-more is NOTHING like the rest of MD, might as well be it's own state lol.

  • I don't sound like that and I'm from Howard County

  • That's so incorrect.

  • Lolwuttt?

    I don't sound like that.

  • I think this is a Baltimore thing. If you've seen Pink Flamingos, the guy who plays the Egg Man says something like "the little lady the eggs love the mooaaast." If you listen carefully, you can hear it. I'm pretty sure that actor was from Baltimore.

  • Oh no she didn't! I know I don't talk like that.

I think she meant Valley Girl!

  • Lol

  • WTF..i dont sound like that

  • @mrseazye

You'll realize you do more than you notice when you leave :) Speaking from experience. Can't say pheon at college without getting laughed at. Both of us Marylanders do it, but never knew we did until we got here.
