I had no idea Jeff Lynne was on this track, but it comes as no surprise, he coulda been a Beatle, his ability to create a perfect pop song was on the same level as these guys.
@Cnat123 I think he just produced it ( I believe it's because George Martin said his hearing wasn't as good as it was before so they brought in Lynne). I thought Paul and George were doing the harmonies and Paul backed up Lennon's vocals.
@HaifischDoktor Not really a surprise. Paul was and is an excellent mimic. He can do spot-on Elvis, Little Richard and Buddy Holly voices. In fact in the early Beatle sessions, George Martin had to tell Paul to stop mimicking John when they were singing two part harmonies; he wanted to hear both voices, not two Lennon voices. On this, Paul did his Lennon voice in order to boost the weak vocals from the home cassette they had to work with.
It's Paul singing to assist John's vocal so that it could be heard clearer. The demo had hiss and the vocal was thin so it needed occasional assistance to stand out
That's Paul's voice. He had to sing along with John's track to reinforce the sound of his voice coming from the tape. It sounds silly that he has to sing in falsetto, but that's recognizably Paul. I compared it to his falsetto from his 1984 song "So Bad."
Sounds like there's a lot more going on there than just editing out John's voice! Did you have access to some unreleased tapes or something? Great job, by the way - what a treat....
The more I listen to the many differant versions of Real love the more it occurs to me that as much as Paul ALWAYS seemed to insist that they do things his way, the truth is that the "Beatles" version is dominated by the steady but true hands of George & Ringo's touch - unlike Free As A Bird, which is clearly Paul ( Who's work I do love ) putting himself front & center on that track. IMO, George & Ringo nailed it just as John would've expected of them.
TheAvillain is right. The stand up bass was the same that was used in many of Elvis Presley's recordings, one example being Heartbreak Hotel. It is affirmed by Paul McCartney in the Anthology series. There is a nice little clip showing Macca on this bass doing a little Elvis imitation. Since I'm not sure how to upload this, type "Paul McCartney on the upright bass" in the search bar.
This song proves that George Harrison was the best guitarist. His licks were always well placed, melodic, sometimes haunting, and always memorable. We miss you, George.
@TheAvillain Yes, that's true. The story is that many years ago, Linda found out that Bill Black was selling his famous double bass used on many early Elvis tracks, so she bought it for Paul as a birthday present. He was deeply moved and has used that bass on several tracks.
Who is that 2nd from left? That is George on far left, Paul 2nd from right, and Ringo on far right.
Nice change of pace to have George showing up cleanshaven. He'd have been in early 50's when the surviving Beatles finished "Real Love", and he died at 58.
Excellent! This was a nearly impossible task anyway! You cant covercoat it but John's voice was sped up but the genious of Lynn (which is why George would have agreed anyway) made it nearly perfect! Too bad John wasnt around in 1994, all he would have to do was drop in while they were gone and added his vocals. I'm sure he's not only laughing in heaven but cant wait to congradulate them at the pearly gates!!!!!!!!!
@shareschannel Yup! Among his many talents, Paul was/in an excellent imitator. He has Little Richard, Gene Vincent and Elvis down cold. But his best vocal imitation is John Lennon. Paul sang along with John's in his (Paul's) best Lennon voice to help boost John's vocal on the two reunion songs.
Ok, I have a question. Thre is a channel in the Dolby Surround re-mix that just has John's demo and one guitar dubb. Could you tell me what channel that is please? Thanks :)
How did you do this? Did you start with the 5.1? It's amazing what you've done here

By the way, it sounds so crystal clear on here, especially compared to the released CD which could've been MUCH better sound quality.

If you listen very carefully, you can still hear the faint sound of John's voice.

i wish they had that paul harmony at 2:47 turned up ... you can barely hear it but it sounds awesome

@kieranmichaelmercer are you sure that's not George on that harmony? It sounds like George to me.

@cchavira84 It's been documented that Paul sang high harmony to flesh out the occasionally thin vocal sound on the tape

Also I love when a mix let you hear so clear some backing vocals (like in 2:47) that otherwise are hard to percieve, thanks for the post!

Love the acoustic bass, you can hear the strings clatter against the timber neck,
I stand to be corrected but i heard it was the very same stand up bass that was used on many Elvis recordings, this instrument now owned by Paul
