@TheMetalHeadGr The Japanese have a thing for the looks of Westerners, such as larger eyes, blonde hair and paler skin. In much the same manner as Westerners have a thing for Asians, albeit for different aspects of their physique.

The exaggeration of the eye-size is to make it easier to give the characters expression, as the Japanese use eyes more than faces to judge expession. This can also be seen in emotes;

It has less to do with "western features" and alot more to do with the fact that the japanese like to design things visually based on its role/personality, and also, like you said, use eyes heavily for expression. But more than that, they use the entire character design for expression. A quick tempered character is likely to have red hair. Not because it is a western trait, but because hot blood and quick temper is often symbolized by the color red.
