How about the Bass Player and Drummer /To hang w/ Erroll Took sum and was not for anyone . Mambo to the Moon. Why would ERROLL need to read any Music if we could read what He palyed Noone could play it like Him ANYAWAY.
Does anyone have recordings (probably it would be audio) of "Erroll's Bounce," "Erroll's Blues," and "Stairway to the Stars". If so could you post to youtube, many many thanks!! (They were released on a recording of 'up-and-coming' pianists, in the mid-50s, I think; along with some O.Peterson and Mary Lou Williams performances.)
These recordings are still available on records and protected by copyright, so buy records or go and see on iTunes store; you'll find the tunes for a ridiculous fee.
listen and imitate is for beginners. Real musicians create music right now or improvisate on some melody or idea. you are right for one thing - reading notes wont make you better musician, you are one or you are not :P but believe me .... knowing the notes help you :)
I agree with you, Erroll plays this tune as a blues, but the first notes are coming from one of his composition called Mambo Carmel.
The problem with Erroll: he could play anything with different styles. It's what he done with this movie. I can send you the first minute of Mamb Carmel and you certainly will recognize the tune. Tell me.
I remember when Erroll was playing in Boston and he appeared on a local TV show hosted by Dave Garroway. Dave had Erroll sit on the piano bench without the phone book. The forklift operator who had brought the piano into the studio drove his forklift onstage, scooped up Erroll, bench and all, brought him over to the piano and carefully adjusted the height until Erroll said that he was comfortable. Erroll then went into one of his numbers while the forklift operator stood by and smoked a cigar.
No, unfortunately. One of the three major network stations in the Boston area has it. If they have archives, then they have it. It's probably 35 years old. It's either WBZ Channel 4 or WHDH Channel 7.
I don't have a copy of the tape. I'll see if I can get it through their website or ask if they can do a search. They might charge a nominal amount for it or maybe not. I'll let you know if I make any headway
Great, this is a real treasure of Garner-Vids. Each time I see him sitting on his telephonebook and playing in his unqique great virtuos style it blows me away.

well, you can't learn music from the sheet music. You have to listen and imitate. Otherwise you're -speaking- with a foreign accent.

I like the way he sings to himself. Oscar Petersen does so sometimes and Lional Hampton, too. And the Book support to sit high.

Uno de los mas grandes pianistas de jazz de todos los tiempos. Admirado por Nelson Freire, uno de los concertistas mas reconocidos de estos tiempos.

The first piece is not Mambo Carmel, fyi. Its a Blues, totally different.

It's a great pleasure to share this to jazz fan.
I probably got all his records and known movies, but I'm always looking for unissued cessions.
