I had to put my friend, Bear, to sleep yesterday. At least he made it to 12 years old and didn't start getting bad because of this disease until 3 months ago.
Sadly enough I have a large male G.S.D. that currently is the same age as your Dexter in this video. My dog looks the same as your Dexter and has degenerated the same way as your dog too. He is to the point now where he is unable to get up off the ground on his own and is developing friction sores on his hips where he's dragging himself alone the grass. He still seems to be as happy as ever and likes to play with his Dad. This video is very touching to me because my dogs name is Dexter too.
I am a recovered fibromyalgic who left the care of medical profession to discover the cause and cure of this horrific condition, and I understand this condition from the inside and back out again. This is a good description of symptoms. Symptoms can often be mistaken for the cause, and treatments that help do not cure. Do not give up from failed hope. Keep going! See video:

Poor dog. So sad to see such a one time strong and healthy dog loose his ability to walk.
My 10 year old, 100lb German Shepherd Dog has a third degree severed Cranial Cruciate Ligament in his knee, known as the Anterior Cruciate Ligament in humans.
Our dogs just got back from the vet. They mentioned this She can barely walk sometimes. Am gonna use the extra strap idea good thinking guys. Thanx i thought it was a long shot searching for this but youtube does it again.
@MrSkillns at the time my beloved dog had been diagnosed with canine dm and we were trying to come to terms with it. we had her on a trial of caproamin (aminocaproic acid) and it was unsuccessful. We were devastated. Not an excuse I know for what I said but I was just lashing out. DM like cdrm is a devastating disease as a lot of owners know. Watching your sidekick basically waste away from the hind legs up. Paralysis creeping ever nearer towards the head. They slip right through your fingers.
@MrSkillns It's still no excuse for what I said about a very informative vid. We lost her in Feb. Ironically, it wasn't the DM that took her. She had amassive stroke. She was sitting in the garden in the spring sun, munching on some treats and generally happy and comfortable and the stroke took her down before she knew what hit her. I was with her at the time which is a blessing I suppose. We are grateful to her for sparing us the decision of euthanasia, and happy she went on her own terms x
Its still no excuse for criticising a very informative vid. We lost our beloved dog in feb. Still devastated. Ironically, it wasn't the DM that took her, she had a massive stroke. I am glad that she went quickly, painlessly and most importantly, in my arms. She was sitting in the spring sunshine having some treats and it just took her down before she knew what hit her. We are grateful that she took the decision of euthanasia out of our hands. I think after all I sacrificed for her, she wanted
@MollyRayForever to give something back. Miss her like crazy. She was 13. She had an Eddies wheels cart for about 8 months when only her hind legs were affected and she loved them! They gave her a new lease of life. She even had her own little pool, I used to to hydrotherapy with her in the evenings and I think that slowed the progression a little.
It's so sad to see such loyal and pure souls suffering like this. I'll always be a dog lover, and I have my reasons.

the main question i think we are all wondering is "does it hurt?"

Anyone know if this could be resolved with stem-cell treatment? (if it was allowed, of course)

There is a DNA test available now. It is about 70 dollars and worth it before you spend hundreds at your vet with the incorrect diagnosis.
