I saw Life of Reilly recently and I highly recommend it! He takes you through the roller coaster of his life. He was what every entertainer should aspire to be. He could do it all. RIP CNR and thanks for making our lives a little less dull.
According to a Harvard Medical School study, 26.4% of all Americans are nuts -- (google "insanity in america" and see the article by John Chuckman.)
No doubt this explains why this piece of ca-ca-dew-dew was presented to the American public.
If Albert Einstein rose from the dead and was featured in a one-man show across the street from C.N. Reilly, his show would close in a night, while CNR's ca-ca-dew-dew would draw *throngs* of people.
Tremendous one man show. I ordered the shirt (which includes a no-frills promo copy
of the whole film) from the website and Charles' performance is sad, funny, fascinating, surprising and wonderful. Thank goodness someone captured it for posterity.
This "trailer" really doesn't do his performance justice--this is a MUST SEE film! I watched it today. He was a truly incredible story teller. Watching this today really got me interested in him--what an incredible man.
Charles Nelson Reilly was known for playing the part of "Horatio Hoodoo" in the Sid and Marty Krofft production of "Lidsville" alongside Butch Patrick, who was "Eddie" from "The Munsters". He was also "Don-Don" from the first "Cannonball Run" with Dom Deluise and Burt Reynolds. He was a regular on "Hollywood Squares" and was also a talented voice artist, whose work will always be remembered. I had no idea he was gay, but do not really think his lifestyle makes any difference. Poor Uncle Crock...
We had the pleasure of meeting him in the 80s in Fort lauderdale at a club with my brother and he was just as funny off screen as on!
I remember coming home from school watching match game on tv around 3pm. He was the funniest on that show and him and brett sommers together (they both died the same year) were a riot! He was also on Lidsville, and was just such a talent, nobody put any emphasis on what at gay was in those days but didn't care, he was a great talent and will truly be missed! RIP

"There's a difference between being out - and owning up to it on TV (which he didn't)"
He couldn't have done that then. All he could do, and it was a lot, was make innuendo and humor and make gays look OK: they can be funny and nonthreatening
@HartfordTommy Beg to differ with you on that one. He owned up to it many a times on tv. He never hid it, cracked jokes about it and totally admitted he was a gay man.
One of my favorites ever and would have loved to meet such an intelligent and hilarious person.
I was born in 1961, so I can't remember not knowing CNR on TV, it seems. I saw him once, at a newsstand in Studio City and he looked just as he might on camera. RIP.
RIP Charles Nelson Reilly. The world is a lot less funny without you. Of course I am sure you have a management position in heaven as the Match Game is divine.
back then that was being openly gay, he was out just not announcing it on his own tv show. Everyone knew he was gay, sort of like Librace, Ellen, and Rosie (it was really no surprised when they announced it)
I agree that we've lost one of the best American Gay Icons, may his fabulous soul rest in peace...and may his partner be comforted by many happy memories. I wish I could see a video of this show in it's entirity.
I saw his stage show in San Francisco. It was absolutely brilliant--hysterical, moving, inspiring. I cannot believe how lucky we are that this performance was actually captured on film. I can't wait for the general release of the film or, better yet, its appearance on DVD. Truly a great talent....
Charles thank you for being a Proud Member of the Gay community & giving us laughs & hope to be free an accepting of who we are not matter what the cost. You will be missed....Heaven has another Angle of Laughs coming it's way. Say Hello to all our other friends when you arrive. Just know you are gone only in physical body never in spririt or from our hearts. Love, Peace & Blessing there in Heaven..
Very sad day today. I still tape all the Match game shows and watch them. If he is not on, I delete the show. I will continue to watch and enjoy. Rest in Peace. The top right seat is reserved for CNR.
I remember when we first met nearly 30 years ago in NYC; and the unfortunately far too-few adventures in Florida, Beverly Hills; the Boheme. The extraordinary train-wreck experience of 'Stage Stuck' in all its glorious absurdity. You'll be so missed, but how does one go about pining for a national monument? I'll try to carry on your legacy of looking squarely into the face of disaster and calmly responding "it's fun, isn't it?" Thanks for the time you shared with we mere mortals, Chuck --
He is brilliant! It just occurred to me that he was the writer in the best X-Files episode ever titled "Jose Chung's From Outer Space"....check it out.
Holy crap! YES! A movie about this amazing man, finally! I saw his one-man show in 2004 and was totally blown away. He tells the greatest stories ever.

Who do you have to fuck to get off television. Now that's funny. He's actually good as a racist comic. RIP Chuck.

The obit I see repeated today talks of his "openly gay TV persona".
...I saw him on TV from when I was a kid in the '60s, and he never talked about being gay on Carson or on game shows!
There's a difference between being out - and owning up to it on TV (which he didn't) vs. having suspiciously gay-like mannerisms (which he did)!
Ellen Degeneres is "openly gay" on TV...C.N.R. was not.
Bobb9999 4 years ago
You have to remember back in the 60's you were not allowed to talk freely about being gay on TV. You could act gay, you just couldn't talk about it.
