The kurds were doing just fine before the invasion, US air support and the no-fly zone in northern iraq was keeping them safe, at a fraction of the cost of this war, without encouraging terrorism. The difference with post WWII Europe is that most Iraquis don't want us there.

This may be a valid point. But just because pulling out of the war isn't going to make them like us doesn't mean we should stay. What will it accomplish - staying will certainly fuel more hatred. We will not achieve anything in this country - the situation is simply going to continue to degrade until we leave, after which it will continue to degrade. There is no solution. We created a mess. The sooner we leave the sooner it will eventually stabilize.

It is a totally unjust war which was destined to end in just the disaster you speak of - the moral victory is inevitable for them because the moral depravity is ours. What exactly did Ronald Regan do to cause the Soviet Union to collapse? I did not state that the sole reason for the USSR's collapse was a drawn out war with a Middle East country. Reagan's Administration also contributed to the collapse of the Soviets by giving weapons and training to Afgahnistan and Osama bin Laden as well as conducting diplomacy. You also forget the contributions of Poland and Gorbachev as well as the Baltic State uprisings to the downfall of the USSR.

Germany remained divided for over 50 years and we still have military bases there. We also keep troops in Japan. Japan is also obligated to this day not to develop a large military beyond a self defence force.
The comparisons of this war to the end of WW2 is false and inappropriate. That paradigm does not apply to Iraq.
