When you sign up with an Internet Service Provider (AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner, etc...) an IP address is dynamically assigned to your computer or router when you connect to the service. In most cases a cable modem is assigned an IP address when it is turned on. DSL modems need to run a utility that will authenticate (username and password login) and receive an IP address.
What is not clear in the video is that the majority of broadband internet routers (including those with wireless) will take most of guess work out and can in some cases automatically determine if you have cable or DSL (your login info would be needed) and will acquire your IP address for you. The router than can assign devices connected in your private home network private IP addresses automatically (DHCP).
StudioDell, Another point to consider. I like the video.
