This is one of the extraordinarily rare scenes that emotionally moved me. Almost nothing fazes me in films because of how fake it all seems. When I was a kid, the end of Terminator 2 made me bawl like a scolded child. I watched I Spit On Your Grave and Schindler's List without incident. This is the only other movie to ever unsettle me, and the only one as an adult to consistently get to me. Not Braveheart, not Girl, Interrupted, not those lousy Oscar winners like Crash. This is almost too much.
@missingnote Go watch Metropolis the anime. Your eyes will mercilessly piss all over your face at the end. I don't even like anime but Metropolis is an example of it being done well.
You won't be able to get artificial intellegence to act like this. Why labor to produce a thought? What is there to fear? Without a body that feels pain there is no incentive to act.
Hey, "D a v v g"........we were 17 and coming out of the theater. I don't recall being bored at all. If fact, we thought it was one of the greatest movie experiences ever. Enjoy.
Hello world.....when we were in the theater (yep, I'm that old) this was such a moment. Later, at school, when we talked about HAL and the three letters that come after those in HAL's name, it was.....ooooohhh.
Lol Siri brought me here, I asked her about Hal and she said we all know what happened to him and she'd rather not talk about it but if I insist, and gave me web results for Hal 9000
All HAL does is really just a misguided attempt at self-defense.
In the novel, it is explained that HAL is unable to grasp the concept of sleep, and believes that being disconnected, even temporary, will mean the end of his existence, so he tries to kill all the humans because he is convinced that they will kill him.
@TheSDBSickness No I agree, maybe not the MOST disturbing for me, but up there for sure. To this day, this scene totally freaks me out; it's the constant, steady, breath and the suspense of "when is HAL going to speak again" as well as, obviously, his entirely creepy monotone voice... ugh
Exactly. And when Hal says, "i'm araid" repeatedly... he goes from being all powerful and controlling, to trying to reason with Dave, to then practically begging and expressing desperate, human fear. In that moment Hal acts more human than any human in the movie. When he starts saying, "i'm afriad", A machine expressing fear of death, it just broke my heart when I watched it the first time.
@TheSDBSickness It's pretty up there in terms of being "hard to watch" for me as well. It reminds me of what happens when someone slowly dies. All of their earthly knowledge, memory, and ability slips away as the human fearfully degrades into the what he or she was at conception.
Sorry, Im new to this whole Hal thing, can someone please explain it to me? Like, what's so famous about this scene, it seems to bring out lots of meaning and messages.
@AndrewIsHot7 Well, HAL is an artificial intelligence computer on their ship, and he begins to malfunction, so two of them discuss turning him off. They go somewhere where they think HAL can't hear them, but he can see them, and he can lipread. HAL kills one of the astronauts when he is fixing the ship and then kills the astronauts in suspended animation. The last astronaut then goes to shut HAL down. This scene shows that HAL does have emotions, which was something they were unsure about.
@Fredfredbug4 GLaDOS is creepy as fuck especially in the first game. The way she says "I'm going to kill you. And all the cake is gone." Shit. I wanted to hide.
If I was Dave, Honestly... I would sit down and ask HAL why he did it. I would wonder and ask, I would assure him I am not plotting to kill him and that he wasn't plotting to kill me, BUT I would be in the computer room at the time so I could deactivate him if he tries any shit.
You can't help but feel sorry for HAL. I mean he knows he's about to die and he's reacting like a normal human being. Kubrick and Clarke were geniuses.
"Remember the time when we locked you out of the ship, and I was like 'Goodbye, Dave' and you were like 'NO WAI' and I was like, 'We pretended we were going to murder you.'
@fauxpromises Well you have found me, Congratulations, was it worth it? because despite your violent behaviour, the only thing you managed to break, is my heart, maybe we can settle for that and we'll just call it a day.
Glad you all got to see this clip. Some of you saw it in theaters too. We thought Kubrick was so sly as we talked among ourselves..... "HAL" get it.....one letter before "IBM"......oooohhh.
@JensDensen colossus was based off of HAL so it really isnt better... something that alot of people liked about Hal was that he was the first of a henre about computers taking over or at least doing some damage
Fuck You Dave What Have You Does With The HAL 9000 Why Did You Do That Man And I Gonna Kill You Dave Yes I Will Kill You Dave Fuck you Dave I Really Hate You He Was Afraid
@iknowwhereyoulike006 I dont mean it should be clear cut (And i learned that sequels explained most of the ending) i mean that randomness like the ending leaves it open to too many interpretations. Its kind of like a person in an art gallery. Artist has drawn a gate, viewer thinks it represents the unopened human mind. The artist says no...its a gate. I dont like it when people look too much into it. I know that isnt the case with this film as it clearly represents life and its meaning.
I think this film would have been so much better without the unexplained ending. Wacky endings like that say they want to leave it to the viewer but that is just an excuse for lazy writing
HELL YEAH! This movie would've been so much better if a great artist like Michael Bay directed it. I mean, Dave would've just busted in with his thermal energy blaster and HAL would've been all like "PREPARE TO DIE, SCUM" and Dave would've been all like "Not today!" and HAL would lunge at him with his wire tentacles which burst out from panels all over the walls and Dave would shoot them all and then he'd shoot HAL in his CPU, and HAL would be all "NOOO!"
@MovieMaster0001 Yeah in the novel Hal opens all the ship doors and there's this enormous "storm" inside the ship as everything that was loose starts flying around, looking for a way to escape. Was quite a scene that left quite a mess inside, but unfortunately not in the film. You just see Dave wearing the full suit, either as a precaution or because the ship really is already empty of oxygen.
@pokamonmaster1997 The book was written while the movie was being made. I read it, too, and it explains a lot of things that the movie doesn't. That said, though, I thought both versions complemented each other. While Clarke's prose can be poetic; i.e., "The Eye opened. The Eye closed," Kubrick's same telling is cinematic, visual, colorful. When comparing a book to a movie that tells the same story, it's all apples and oranges. What taste you prefer is up to you.

@TheEagerMcBeaver No. It made me laugh too. In fact, the whole part of the movie was pretty amusing!!!
