  • IT'S OVER NINE THOUSANDS!!!

  • IT'S OVER NIÑEZ THOUSANDS!!!!

  • You just killed my friend Hal. You are so gonna die! -:(

  • I'm definitly going to watch this film again. For science.

  • Shut the fuck up hal and take it like a fuckin cyborg!!!!

  • This isn't brave. It's Murder.

  • yeah i wasnt planning on sleeping anyways

  • This is one of the extraordinarily rare scenes that emotionally moved me. Almost nothing fazes me in films because of how fake it all seems. When I was a kid, the end of Terminator 2 made me bawl like a scolded child. I watched I Spit On Your Grave and Schindler's List without incident. This is the only other movie to ever unsettle me, and the only one as an adult to consistently get to me. Not Braveheart, not Girl, Interrupted, not those lousy Oscar winners like Crash. This is almost too much.

  • @missingnote Go watch Metropolis the anime. Your eyes will mercilessly piss all over your face at the end. I don't even like anime but Metropolis is an example of it being done well.

  • You won't be able to get artificial intellegence to act like this. Why labor to produce a thought? What is there to fear? Without a body that feels pain there is no incentive to act.

  • daisy daisy....

  • Hal: I'm afraid, Dave.

Dave: *tearful* No, Hal. You're dying, and I'm sorry.

  • This scene freaked me out its so strange but still so fascinating and simply awesome

  • hal wasn't really afraid.

  • This reminds me of an episode of Futurama.

  • @UnusedBEAR if you're being ironic, i'm just a jackass. but if you're serious, that episode was actually based off this.

  • "Dave" is wearing orange, too.

  • This reminds me of Portal so much.

  • for everyone involved, it must have been so much fun making this movie !!

  • FU HAL.

  • Hey, "D a v v g"........we were 17 and coming out of the theater. I don't recall being bored at all. If fact, we thought it was one of the greatest movie experiences ever. Enjoy.

  • why is he breathing so heavily?

  • @sisnoXsisnosis He just breathes inside the space suit without any outer sounds and straight into mic.

  • so powerful scene!

  • If HAL is your mind, Dave is a Drug.

  • Hello world.....when we were in the theater (yep, I'm that old) this was such a moment. Later, at school, when we talked about HAL and the three letters that come after those in HAL's name, it was.....ooooohhh.

  • @Wrb123100 At what point of bordem did you think of that, I still can't believe people somehow noticed the whole IBM thing

  • Siri's x boyfriend got f*cked

  • "take a stress pill and think things over" lmao

  • @wishywashywara - i know, right?! hilarious!

  • @wishywashywara My Dad used to say that.

  • "you leave me breathless"-fry

  • I have been to HAL Laboratory in Kofu, Japan. Very impressive.

  • are they really in space?

  • I can feel your dick Dave

  • the future of uninstalling programs

  • oh gosh, we're reading this in Spec Fic class and I never watched the movie, hal's voice is making me so scared :~;`

  • 0:00..Welcome to quitting Facebook in the future!

  • Comment removed

  • and thus will be the death knell of the police state... WE'RE AFRAID... WE'RE AFRAID CITIZENS...

  • Lol Siri brought me here, I asked her about Hal and she said we all know what happened to him and she'd rather not talk about it but if I insist, and gave me web results for Hal 9000

  • @kyuubiyura= If you have Siri, ask it this question. What do you get, when you cross an owl and a bungee cord? You will laugh.

  • @vigo894 hm she sais she doesnt understand that

  • Stop Dave, I'm afraid that my power is OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!!!!!11

  • Now I realizes that Portal's GLADOS is a reference to HAL. Even the Phrases.

  • Creepy >.<

  • It's Siri's grandpa!

  • @btoneplaya1 yeah man!!!

  • i think we found GLaDoS' father or something...

  • @btoneplaya1 Lover. Tumblr has large records about it.

  • So this is where that one episode of Futurama came from... Huh...

  • Comment removed

  • What's Siri?!

  • God damn it Dave! TAKE A CHILL PILL!!

  • "I know I've made some very poor decisions lately." Is this HAL running for office? Sounds like any MK1 MOD0 politico that wants a 2d term.

  • The most powerful computer in the world asks Dave, "Just what do you think you"re doing Dave?"

  • HAL is the reason why most manufacturers are scared away from using male automated voices in their devices, and now Siri is a women.

  • @bmbdez but GLaDOS?

  • @ 2:42, the reflection on the helmet (shot looking down on its top) looks like a grinning skull.

  • @reving19 Earlier in the film..I forget where, when one of the astronauts is servicing the antenna, the top of his helmet looks like a frog's face.

  • This scene is the most disturbing and hard to watch scene in any movie i've ever seen. I guess nobody feels this way?

  • @TheSDBSickness No I agree, maybe not the MOST disturbing for me, but up there for sure. To this day, this scene totally freaks me out; it's the constant, steady, breath and the suspense of "when is HAL going to speak again" as well as, obviously, his entirely creepy monotone voice... ugh

That's why it's so good, though!!

  • @oldschoolnickrocks

Exactly. And when Hal says, "i'm araid" repeatedly... he goes from being all powerful and controlling, to trying to reason with Dave, to then practically begging and expressing desperate, human fear. In that moment Hal acts more human than any human in the movie. When he starts saying, "i'm afriad", A machine expressing fear of death, it just broke my heart when I watched it the first time.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheSDBSickness i feeled the exact same way. what a great scene.

  • @TheSDBSickness It's pretty up there in terms of being "hard to watch" for me as well. It reminds me of what happens when someone slowly dies. All of their earthly knowledge, memory, and ability slips away as the human fearfully degrades into the what he or she was at conception.

  • OMFG, I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS CREEPY ASS MOVIE WHEN I WAS A KID; ROFL.

  • a super powerful computer that doesn't know how to lock a door?

  • Sorry, Im new to this whole Hal thing, can someone please explain it to me? Like, what's so famous about this scene, it seems to bring out lots of meaning and messages.

  • @AndrewIsHot7 Well, HAL is an artificial intelligence computer on their ship, and he begins to malfunction, so two of them discuss turning him off. They go somewhere where they think HAL can't hear them, but he can see them, and he can lipread. HAL kills one of the astronauts when he is fixing the ship and then kills the astronauts in suspended animation. The last astronaut then goes to shut HAL down. This scene shows that HAL does have emotions, which was something they were unsure about.

  • Why so many dislikes? I really think I'm entitled to an answer to that question.

  • take a stress pill and think things over... hahaa

  • hey! i want to hear it sing

  • GLADOS: Much more evil

    HAL: Really creepy.

  • @Fredfredbug4 GLaDOS is creepy as fuck especially in the first game. The way she says "I'm going to kill you. And all the cake is gone." Shit. I wanted to hide.

  • @fauxpromises I think the creepiest line is "You're not a good person..good people don't end up in here"

  • this is not a good film for psychedelic drugs

  • @Overlorddz I've always wanted to watch this on lsd. Have you?

  • If I was Dave, Honestly... I would sit down and ask HAL why he did it. I would wonder and ask, I would assure him I am not plotting to kill him and that he wasn't plotting to kill me, BUT I would be in the computer room at the time so I could deactivate him if he tries any shit.

  • Early glados.

  • Begin Dave, I freaking love THIS!

Come on Dave, bring me to a mindgasm!

Cum Dave! I've not seen that before!

I ain't afraid of no ghost!

  • Has Apple not seen this?

  • iPhone 4s?

  • You can't help but feel sorry for HAL. I mean he knows he's about to die and he's reacting like a normal human being. Kubrick and Clarke were geniuses.

  • 1. Into Google Translate, type "Is Stanley Kubrick the best"

    2. Translate it from English to Vietnamese

    3. Copy and paste Vietnamese text to the other box

    4. Translate from Vietnamese to English

    5. Google Translate knows what its talking about

  • Don't you just get scared to shit at HAL's voice? or it's just me??

  • I always felt rather sorry for Hal. He killed because they plotted to kill him after all

  • "Remember the time when we locked you out of the ship, and I was like 'Goodbye, Dave' and you were like 'NO WAI' and I was like, 'We pretended we were going to murder you.'

    That was great."

  • @fauxpromises lmao game references :3

  • @fauxpromises Well you have found me, Congratulations, was it worth it? because despite your violent behaviour, the only thing you managed to break, is my heart, maybe we can settle for that and we'll just call it a day.

  • @fauxpromises Omigosh lol!!!!

  • Dave's not here man!

  • Glad you all got to see this clip. Some of you saw it in theaters too. We thought Kubrick was so sly as we talked among ourselves..... "HAL" get it.....one letter before "IBM"......oooohhh.

  • check out "colossus, the forbin project" HAL is a picknick compared to colussus

  • @JensDensen colossus was based off of HAL so it really isnt better... something that alot of people liked about Hal was that he was the first of a henre about computers taking over or at least doing some damage

  • @iknowwhereyoulike006 I dont mean it should be clear cut (And i learned that sequels explained most of the ending) i mean that randomness like the ending leaves it open to too many interpretations. Its kind of like a person in an art gallery. Artist has drawn a gate, viewer thinks it represents the unopened human mind. The artist says no...its a gate. I dont like it when people look too much into it. I know that isnt the case with this film as it clearly represents life and its meaning.

  • Camera work in this scene is great

  • Take a stress pill, and think it over

  • when i saw this i thought it was a advertisment on why not to do drugs.then i noticed it was an hour long and i stayed up 3 hours watching it

  • This is what happened when i tried to uninstall the trial version of AVG

  • @bleesev2

    Bwahahaha!

  • daisy, daisy, give me your answer do

  • Reminds me of GLaDOS. Or that one time when I uninstalled McAfee Pro.

  • had a similar experience closing my google account

  • @drawby LOL!!!!

  • That's what GLaDOS sounded like in the 70's..

  • I think this film would have been so much better without the unexplained ending. Wacky endings like that say they want to leave it to the viewer but that is just an excuse for lazy writing

  • Comment removed

  • @15GamingGuy He was reborn and evolved into a new form.

  • @SinclairDelux Douglas Rain

  • this always makes me cry :'(

  • Stop Dave...I'm not done downloading "Midget Cheerleader Gang Bang Vol 12" from The Pirate Bay...Stop Dave...and watch it with me...

  • @MensRightsVideos ROFLMAO

  • 23 people are HAL.

  • hal you notthing but pice of junk computer now im going pull your plug now

  • Stephen Hawking sure is a great voice actor

  • hal is glados' dad

  • CRAP FLOATING IN SPACE FOR 10 BILLION YEARS.

  • its like male version of glados.

  • @gethsoftware word

  • I can tell why Anthony Hopkins used this as inspiration for Hannibal Lecter

  • Hurry up Dave, I'm bored.

Dave, my mind is going...this is taking for EVAR!!!

  • @kruegda

HELL YEAH! This movie would've been so much better if a great artist like Michael Bay directed it. I mean, Dave would've just busted in with his thermal energy blaster and HAL would've been all like "PREPARE TO DIE, SCUM" and Dave would've been all like "Not today!" and HAL would lunge at him with his wire tentacles which burst out from panels all over the walls and Dave would shoot them all and then he'd shoot HAL in his CPU, and HAL would be all "NOOO!"

    All in 50 seconds!

  • @Npowell01 Not sure if sarcastic or trolling...

  • @ZOLTAR802

    absolutely sarcastic

  • My thoughts of this movie:

    Beginning- GET ON WITH IT

Dave Scenes- Come on! You can do it!

    End- What the... Nooooooooo!

    (Good movie)

  • It's Hal nine thooooouuuuuussssssand!

  • @Avpsagaman #LOL

  • doesnt this movie just remind you of the portal games?

  • @OficialFamousPeople Rather, the Portal games reminds us of this. :P

  • @Macz338 lol yea!

  • Computers can't be afraid; rather, they flash you BSODs and YOU'd be the one afraid.

  • Why did he put on a helmet if he's safely in the ship?

  • @MovieMaster0001 ...Because hal had deprived the ship of oxygen, maybe?

  • @MovieMaster0001 Hal turned off the oxygen.

  • @MovieMaster0001 Yeah in the novel Hal opens all the ship doors and there's this enormous "storm" inside the ship as everything that was loose starts flying around, looking for a way to escape. Was quite a scene that left quite a mess inside, but unfortunately not in the film. You just see Dave wearing the full suit, either as a precaution or because the ship really is already empty of oxygen.

  • @MrTrilliondollarman No, but I did like his decision to give HAL the number one spot. He really is a creepy villain.

  • The book is alot better

  • @pokamonmaster1997 The book was written while the movie was being made. I read it, too, and it explains a lot of things that the movie doesn't. That said, though, I thought both versions complemented each other. While Clarke's prose can be poetic; i.e., "The Eye opened. The Eye closed," Kubrick's same telling is cinematic, visual, colorful. When comparing a book to a movie that tells the same story, it's all apples and oranges. What taste you prefer is up to you.

  • 2001: A space Odyssey. Where iconic scenes flow one after the other from beginning to end.

  • @SlyFox616 ALSO half of the movie is classical music!

  • 23 people are afraid. They can feel it...

  • That's Awesome. I'm 14, I've recently been watching some great classics, such as Jaws, The Blues Brothers, Fantasia, etc. I've been watching old movies (and some new) movies for a long time now, and it just occurred to me that I never watched this.

  • This is probably most chilling scene in the history of cinema. It gets me every time...the whole film is superb in so many ways.

  • 23 dislikes need to take a stress pill and think things over

  • the game portal 1 & 2 was inspired by the A.I intelligence in this movie.

  • portal was inspired by this AI intelligence

  • Me and my brother watched this movie a week ago. At the end:

    Him: Oh, I get it!

    Me: No you don't

    Him: I know...

  • HAL: I'm sorry I tried to kill you. Friends?

  • alot of people unfamiliar with this movie are surprised to find out it is from 1968.Its polished and innovative production give it the appearance of a newer film

  • This is the most touching death scene in a movie of all time.

  • Probably the best scene in film. Ever.

  • There was some controversy when the movie was released that the letters that automatically succeed each letter in HAL was IBM. Get it, H-! A-B L-M?? Could you imagine how much pussy that dude got from figuring that out?? LMAOOOO

  • watched this movie and it made me want to read all the books

  • fuck Dave, Hal is awesome!

  • @xXimmortalValorXx The black monolith was the alien....instead of creating a big creature Kubrick made it as a presence and Dave as seen in the movie grows older in rapid time frame then when he reaches his old age instead of keep on growing older it showed the baby as 'new life' but it still is Dave (my thoughts anyway)

  • I really hated this movie. Although it did have its great moments and the music was epic. But the movie was one giant mind fuck. I never understood what the floating baby at the end was about can someone explain it to me.

  • @xXimmortalValorXx

My thoughts: The black domino things made Dave evolve into a superior form.

    Baby fetus thing = dave.

You can google the ending but its pretty complicated.

  • @xXimmortalValorXx The baby is supposed to be the next step in human evolution.

  • fuck you Dave

  • Stress pills are crap... You get addicted to them, and after a while a smallest noise sends you into a panic attack.

  • Missing Dialogue:

    "UPSET!!!....... I'm fucking furious Hal....

You can shove your stress pill up your arse sideways and fuck off while you're doing it."

  • Because Chief was taken from the University of Illinois. the is how it really happened!

  • HAL is scarier than any Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Kreuger, or Jigsaw put together.

  • im sorry, but i think HAL has the SEXIEST voice ever!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

  • This is a great movie, but I can't believe there's gravity in the hanger room. It makes no sense!

  • @MrBranchFreeman Just one of those details that most in the audience will not notice, but Tech Guys like us do see it.

  • @americaneagle2076 I guess. This movie is so scientifically correct except for that one detail.

  • Am I the only one who thought it was hilarious when HAL told Dave to "take a chill pill" at 1:28 ?

  • @TheEagerMcBeaver No. It made me laugh too. In fact, the whole part of the movie was pretty amusing!!!

  • In the end I felt like Dave became the robotic character and HAL became a human. Just how the emotions are shown.

  • @spongefan11 You are COMPLETELY CORRECT!!!

  • 23 people are afraid of dave XD
