You need to synthesize the Moon Selector to switch controllable characters in battle. Once you have that ,open up the menu in battle with Y and press Start to shuffle the controllable character.

wait until you play it first. I'm on my 3rd playthrough of this game, but I still think that symphonia is better. Plus, flynn isn't a very fun character to play as, way to slow and blocky, especially in comparison to yuri, who is pretty smooth in his movements.
