@cnightwing Haha, crazy stuff is an understatement. I think I have the right to be jealous, I'd have to sell my soul to afford all your gear. Great video, though.

@cnightwing Perhaps the poor video quality makes this feel just as nostalgic as the synths..like your coming straight out of the 70's. Very much like the Vangelis CS-80 video. ;)
@freezazoid I don't own either, but from listening, the prophet can do some nice bass pads or strings, but the pro-one destroys the 600 for that nice punchy bass. The pro-one has much quicker (analog) envellopes compared to the 600's kind of sloppy (digital) envellopes.
MAN, what a nice collection. The CS80 is #1 on my wish list but I can't see ever being able to get one, too rare, too expensive but GOOD GOD what an amazing synth. As much as I like Vangelis, I usually think first of the amazing Eddie Jobson and his work with UK.
So (I have to ask), have you heard the Arturia plug and what do you think of it? I'm old enough to know that no software is going to match the discreet, vintage hardware of a real CS80, but is it worth checking out?
I agree...I think it's not a good way to move the beast every time it doesn't speak...A good mainteinance follows a complete restoration...So my powerful CS-80 in front of me and my lovely VP-330 on the left side...
Ohh no ! The technician needs to come to your place otherwise all the little potis inside the voices are off and you can start calibrating the synth all over again. You will hear the tuning will be off . Which can be tuned pretty easily , though. This synth really needs constant attention :) but it pays off. So you better become a techie :) !

Well, if you don't want the cycle and you're good with a soldering iron ... I would suggest replacing all the 4000 CMOS chips, adding bypass capacitors, and systematically replacing all capacitors starting with the Power Supply . The last thing you want is that the hard to get custom chips get blown .
All CS-80's are almost 38 or 37 years old... and need a complete overhaul.

Hey, nice vid, nice ambient feel. I'm just getting into synths and would like to get one of the CS range, probably a 10, but anyway, the front panel on the Cs5/10/30 looks completely different to the front panel of your CS 80, why is that? Thanks.
Because they are all different Synthesizers with different features . So they have different layouts , sizes and architecture . Think of cars as a comparison with different options.
Rich ... no way ! Just have been collecting and restoring for years :) ... the CS-80 I 've traded in for a Roland JD-800 and a Access Virus. She was totally mute and learned to sing again after a three month period technical total overhaul .

Brilliant! Wonderful sounds! These instruments are wonderful to play, so expressive. It's like playing an acoustic instrument- I have got one of these. I get offers to sell it almost on a monthly basis but I won't! Keep it up!
What is the top offer thus far? I wouldn't sell it, they are party of history and to own something so rare is quite an achievement. Don't sell your kids and grand kids will be like WTF. :O
High thousands- £7000+. It is in good nick and complete and original, and a late serial number with the more stable oscillators so it could fetch even more, but as I said- I'm keeping it! ;-))
@cnightwing Have you thought of sending this up to the BBC? They used a Yamaha CS80 in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This was an in house group of compsers who used synths to make music and sound effects needed for TV and radio. Since it was closed down in the 90s music now comes from special commissions. You never know your luck.
Great! I've been looking around like crazy for this kind of music. Are there any other artists besides Vangelis who use this sound? (And I don't mean the instrument, but the melodies themselves)
The cs 80 is a beautiful machine! I am highly tempted to get a synthesiser: I would probably get a Roland Juno G. However the sound the cs 80 produces is so unique. Bravo!
Yes , and a Memorymoog Plus, and Prophet 600 on top of it. You should see the other side of the wing: PPG Wave, Elka Synthex , Oberheim Expander, Chroma Polaris , Roland Juno 106 etc. all the old goodies. :)

Hi omissis75 , I was trying to imitate a Vangelis like mood . Kind of like the soundtrack from "The Bounty" . Yes the first line seems to be a hypnotic bass line nothing special. And then some brass pads. And I play the lead /improvisation live as I go. I like thew ring modulator it's an awesome effect. :)
i'm also jealous ,there is a software version of this synth from arturia but what a heart this one (hardware) is 1 billion times better than the softsynth version.

Yes, This is so true. There are very few mainstream composers that really know how to use synths for film scores or any real expressive playing for that matter.
