I'm sure that Obi-Wan's death was also to help push Luke to one day get back at Vader. Surely one would want to avenge the death of their Father and his Best Friend.
"he was afraid you'd follow me on some damned fool idealistic crusade like your father did.... speaking of which, would you like to go with me to Alderaan on some damned fool idealistic crusade?"
It's as simple as this. Lucas was still developing the story. In this first Star Wars production it is as Obi Wan says. The idea of Vader being Luke's father came later, even to Lucas.
@helmineniina Ok, I will try to explain. What they said in original trilogy is that Anakin, before he became Darth Vader, was symphatic, nice guy and great hero. Thats not at all what he was in pretrilogy. He was whining, angry, selfish, murdering bastard and jerk and he wasnt in any way superior to other jedis.
and here we see the birth of "The Clone Wars", A single line that spawned a mini-series, which spawned a movie, which spawned a TV series and countless bandwagon products
@Odor66 well actually in the first star wars, George Lucas hadn't invented that "too old to begin the training" stuff yet. It's impossible to patch those plot holes.
The only real solution is they had no intention of training Luke in the first place, they only meant to use him as a sort of hostage for leverage vs Anakin. Which is ultimately what they ended up doing. Obi Wan decided to train him anyway, and the training failed. He couldn't beat Vader.
@kozmon0t But they guessed that Anakin wouldn't want to kill him, and would try to use him to kill Sidious instead. So after realizing his Jedi training was useless, they sent him to surrender, turning him into Sidious's hostage and forcing Anakin's hand. Anakin had to put his plan into action, provoking Luke and hoping he'd attack Sidious, but the stupid kid wouldn't do it, so he had to fight Sidious one on one instead. Stupid Jedi ruined everything. Sneaky, Machiavellian connivers.
To quote obi-wan later:So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view. ...you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.
You would almost think that obi wan is telling the truth about his father being betrayed by darth vader (the dark side) and murdering him (not in a physical sense).
The way Obi Wan talks about how the lightsaber was gonna go to Luke once he was old, sounds to me like Anakin already had a young Luke when he was still a good guy. Which makes no sense if you watch the prequels... O_o
@WelcomeGhostsIV I think Obi-Wan made that up so that Luke would accept the saber. Plus, everything about Luke's "father" was all just a lie, because obviously it's Darth Vader.
I loved the original trilogy since I was the youngest I remember, but I never saw the prequels until 2005. I figured I'd watch 1 and 2 then see 3 in the cinema. I heard about them, and heard good about them, but all I had to go on was my friends. I hoped for an awesome story about Anakin's slow descent from a glorious Jedi Knight to the evil Darth Vader. What I got was a contrived story with more holes than cheese about a emo douche bag who becomes evil because someone told him to.
@willmandude I think that a lot of people say they're worse then they really are. I didn't get bored watching any of them, and I felt that, while they didn't live up to the greatness of the originals, they weren't the pile of trash that everyone keeps saying they are.
i dont know why everyone says that the three prequels sucked. I found them to be pretty decent movies, although they didnt get to the level of the original ones, but its not easy to do that, to make them awesome movies that perfectly fit the other three.
that light saber is the same light saber from episode 3, when obi wan defeated anakin on the lava planet and took anakin's light saber after the battle
People really shouldn't hate the prequels so much. I love the whole series in general. While there are some movie I like better, I don't hate any of them. All of the movies were worthy of my time, and I enjoyed everyone one
Is it true that when part IV was written, Darth Vader and Anakin were 2 different people? They only threw the twist in late in the production of Empire Strikes Back?
"A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force."
@NottinghamForest22 the prequels and orginials is one big epic movie they go together i can see why obi wan is lying here plus between episode 3 and 4 obi wan talks to qui gon jinn his former master
@NottinghamForest22 And could you explain your position on this? Is it because Alec Guinness was the first to play Obi-Wan and you refuse to let anything come after be better, even if it is better? I'd like to know because Ewan McGregor did a wonderful job. In my opinion, it was him and the music that saved the prequels.
to further add... watch Red Letter Media's reviews of the prequels for a better understanding the first two are available on youtube under " red letter media" or the dot com of the same name.
the prequels sucked lucas's ass through a straw.... he gave up and didn't care about the story- only about the money that he was going to rake in... same with the re-release and now the the fucking DDD versions..... I refuse to watch any of the movies until the original cuts are put out for purchase.
My God Lucas fucked up big time with The Prequels. I can't even class them as Star Wars films. If he'd only written the damn things and given them to people like Spielberg or Cameron or Ridley Scott to direct, then we could only dream of how those films would've turned out. The greatest film of the OT was the one he had the least involvement with - TESB. Lucas simply fucked up an entire trilogy for everyone over the age of 10. In fact he owes us all another 3 movies to make up for it!!
@mrlavabeast lucas doesn't owe you shit and he knows that. they could have been better but that's what we've got and I like most of them. (not Episode 2. that one was pretty bad)
The Jedi Order, the Force, and the Clone Wars are much more evocative in these few minutes of the first trilogy than in the whole prequels that followed. Now all the story is told, yes, but the whole thing looks like just another super hero thing, without the elegance and chivalry of the beginnings. The prelogy just looks too brutal and frenetic. Look at the first films. Some people will think they were too slow and lacked action or something. But I think there were fine.
MidiClorians are the stupidest excuse for the force. George Lucas probably didnt want a new religion on his hands so he made being a jedi physically impossible.
Although the prequels appear to have totally lost this concept, from the original trilogy, the story of Anakin seems something akin to Lucifer. Once a great and talented knight, he is very well liked and generally kind. Then he falls from grace through a lust for power, becoming an evil agent that actively hunts those who once were his friends and comrades. The prequel Anakin is just a whiny kid with serious anger and abandonment issues, and instead of a Jedi hunter we get a child killer.
@luis6079 While that is funny, the only point I was trying to make is the huge discrepancy between the 2 trilogies. Alec Guiness, in this scene, wonderfully reminisces over a close friend, without so much as a hint of reservation. Therefore, we have a story of 2 very different Anakins, because the Anakin he is describing never ever existed in the 3 prequels. He goes from whiny child, to arrogant and murdering adolescent, to dark and brooding adult... and that's before he turns to the dark side.
is it just me or is the lightsaber a light blue almost white when if its supposed to be anakins lightsaber in episode III and V it was blue like a dark blue like Obi Wans.
@ps3fan4life007 this is the original where giving the light saber any colour was already quite an achievement lol. in the special edition this is corrected so it looks more blueish... (same with obiwans lightsaber)
What a talented actor Guiness was, when Luke asks him about his father's death is just awesome... wonder if Sir Alec knew about the whole plot at that time...
That's really bad of you to say about his dad. What the heck does the power of the dark force do anyone any good when it makes everyone miserable? More especially when everyone wants to be good and they know it.
This one scene packs more emotional punch of the relationship between Obi Wan and Anakin than all 3 of the prequels. The way Obi speaks of Anakin and the fondness he had for him as a friend doesn't translate well in the new films IMHO.
@voodoomanboy right! the prequels have a terrible lack of emotion, humor! There was no character as wise and true as Obi wan and no one as explosive as Solo
@SLPIFan so we have to be TOLD, we have to have them talk. WE dont see their friendship, they tell us about it.
In the OT, we see luke and han dont like each other, but warm up to each other after saving each others asses. We see the friendship grow and develop
In the PT all we SEE is anakin bitch about obi wan.
The prequel trilogy gives nothing in substance, just flashy lightsaber effects. like dangling a shiny object in front of a cat. Were given no reason to hate the sith, or like the jedi.
I disagree. They seemed like good friends in the first half of REVENGE they showed their friendship quite well. Dialogue helps us show relationships, and at the beginning of EP III the two had good comradery together. But what do I know. I'm just an apologist right buddy. My word counts for jack and am just an easily appealed to nimrod correct?
@voodoomanboy Yes very well spoken! And one explanation too, is that Alec Guiness was a masterly old school actor even if he hated the role as Obi Wan.
@Marcofloat Eps 1 and 2 wasted the audience's time. Revenge of the Sith should have been the trilogy. The beginning of Episode 1 should have been the beginning of the clone wars, and Anakin should have already been an adult. Then we actually could have had at least 2 films where Anakin was mature and likable enough to actually make his transformation to the dark side in film 3 a tragedy.
@erentheca. Ye I agree with what you said, maybe george lucas was too excited about the possibility of using special effects that he didn't understand this simple truth!
@Clorwall You are so right! Twenty years ago they used to spend their money on a good movie, and not in useless flashes and 3d lightnings. Disneyworld was the right place for such things.
Is it just me or is Obi-Wans description of Anakin and how he supposedly went off to join the Clone Wars, NOTHING like what is shown in the prequels? Talk about bad continuity... Lol.
@CommentaryX You know, just cussing people out who disagree with you and point out facts you are overlooking does not a good argument make. It certainly doesn't refute anything they say.
Anyone know if there's a clip showing the first scene of Obi-Wan after he scares off the Sand People to rescue Luke? The intro music of The Force is so iconic.
i love how they screw up the blocking so that Luke comes within like half an inch of slicing Obi-Wan's face off. AND HE DOESN'T BLINK. It's a screwup that actually helps sell OWK as a fearless jedi master. Neat.
Most of the prequels were asspulls by George Lucas....In Episode 5 Obiwan said Yoda was his mentor yet it was Quigonn in Part 1....Obiwan didn't even now r2d2 in Episoe 4
at the beginning where luke told obi wan that his father was a navigator on a spice frieghter was true. The Twilight, the ship anakin was using during the clone wars was a spice frieghter.
"Listen, I can't get involved. I've got work to do! It's not that I like the Empire, I hate it but there's nothing I can do about it right now!" A far too familiar refrain.
@CommentaryX Seriously. I look at this scene and think "Look all that Lucas had to work with. This could have been the best story ever filmed." Then Lucas goes off and creates Episodes 1, 2, and 3..... It's bad enough that the dialogue in those prequels was corny and simplistic, but at the very least Lucas could have stuck to the described backstory. If Episodes 1, 2, and 3 were given to Chistopher Nolan, Ronald D Moore, or JJ Abrams, they might have actually been enjoyable.
The dialogue Alec Guinness has in this scene is better than Episodes 1, 2, and 3 combined. The dialogue seems to imply that Anakin Skywalker was a young farmhand, around Luke's age, who was working with his brother Owen. At some point Obi Wan recruits Anakin and they go off to fight the Clone Wars together, and Owen finds the entire thing foolish, never seeing his brother again. They could have easily created a much better story if they had stayed true to the original material.
Put audio translate and enjoy it!!! Very funny :D

This scene shows Lucas had lost touch with the original films when he wrote the prequels.
How is it possible that Obi Wan could have glowing memories of Aniken when he; murdered his own wife, murdered children and destroyed the jedi order.

mrlavabeast 9 months ago
@mrlavabeast lucas doesn't owe you shit and he knows that. they could have been better but that's what we've got and I like most of them. (not Episode 2. that one was pretty bad)

The only movie worth damn out of the whole 6.

Schmurxzl 9 months ago
MidiClorians are the stupidest excuse for the force. George Lucas probably didnt want a new religion on his hands so he made being a jedi physically impossible.
favorites411 9 months ago 2
best movie of all time. revenge of the sith is just as good. first two chapters need to be redone.
danielBarnweezy 10 months ago
Although the prequels appear to have totally lost this concept, from the original trilogy, the story of Anakin seems something akin to Lucifer. Once a great and talented knight, he is very well liked and generally kind. Then he falls from grace through a lust for power, becoming an evil agent that actively hunts those who once were his friends and comrades. The prequel Anakin is just a whiny kid with serious anger and abandonment issues, and instead of a Jedi hunter we get a child killer.
erentheca 10 months ago 7
@erentheca Awesome! I didn't realise you were the ghost writer for the Star Wars movies? Are you now working on the Sequal Trilogy?
luis6079 10 months ago
@luis6079 While that is funny, the only point I was trying to make is the huge discrepancy between the 2 trilogies. Alec Guiness, in this scene, wonderfully reminisces over a close friend, without so much as a hint of reservation. Therefore, we have a story of 2 very different Anakins, because the Anakin he is describing never ever existed in the 3 prequels. He goes from whiny child, to arrogant and murdering adolescent, to dark and brooding adult... and that's before he turns to the dark side.

So Obi Wan knows who Leia is too?

is it just me or is the lightsaber a light blue almost white when if its supposed to be anakins lightsaber in episode III and V it was blue like a dark blue like Obi Wans.
ps3fan4life007 11 months ago
@ps3fan4life007 this is the original where giving the light saber any colour was already quite an achievement lol. in the special edition this is corrected so it looks more blueish... (same with obiwans lightsaber)

What a talented actor Guiness was, when Luke asks him about his father's death is just awesome... wonder if Sir Alec knew about the whole plot at that time...

That's really bad of you to say about his dad. What the heck does the power of the dark force do anyone any good when it makes everyone miserable? More especially when everyone wants to be good and they know it.
Amandaaks36 11 months ago
This one scene packs more emotional punch of the relationship between Obi Wan and Anakin than all 3 of the prequels. The way Obi speaks of Anakin and the fondness he had for him as a friend doesn't translate well in the new films IMHO.

@voodoomanboy No, shut up.
Phoque6Slone 8 months ago
@voodoomanboy right! the prequels have a terrible lack of emotion, humor! There was no character as wise and true as Obi wan and no one as explosive as Solo
raoulhery 8 months ago
@voodoomanboy
They did a good job showing their friendship in the prequel trilogy. Here are scenes that displayed this well.
*The elevator scene in Episode II
*The scene where the return to Coruscant right after rescuing Palpatine in Episode III
*The landing pad scene with Obi-Wan leaving for Utapau in Episode III
*Obi-Wan's "You were my brother speech" in Episode III
SLPIFan 8 months ago
@SLPIFan so we have to be TOLD, we have to have them talk. WE dont see their friendship, they tell us about it.
In the OT, we see luke and han dont like each other, but warm up to each other after saving each others asses. We see the friendship grow and develop
In the PT all we SEE is anakin bitch about obi wan.
The prequel trilogy gives nothing in substance, just flashy lightsaber effects. like dangling a shiny object in front of a cat. Were given no reason to hate the sith, or like the jedi.
mrlowhe 7 months ago
@mrlowhe
SLPIFan 7 months ago
@voodoomanboy Yes very well spoken! And one explanation too, is that Alec Guiness was a masterly old school actor even if he hated the role as Obi Wan.

@voodoomanboy i disagree with you the prequels and orginials go together as one big epic movie

All of the prequels suck, except for some scenes from the second and all of the third. Oh well maybe it's just the phantom menace that sucks.
Marcofloat 1 year ago 3
@Marcofloat Eps 1 and 2 wasted the audience's time. Revenge of the Sith should have been the trilogy. The beginning of Episode 1 should have been the beginning of the clone wars, and Anakin should have already been an adult. Then we actually could have had at least 2 films where Anakin was mature and likable enough to actually make his transformation to the dark side in film 3 a tragedy.
erentheca 10 months ago 4
@erentheca. Ye I agree with what you said, maybe george lucas was too excited about the possibility of using special effects that he didn't understand this simple truth!
Marcofloat 10 months ago
@Marcofloat nah Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones Sucked. RotS was better, but couldve been a lot better.
The whole plot needed to be changed in the prequels. instead of over 20 years, it shouldve been over 3 like the original.
mrlowhe 7 months ago
The lightsaber feels so organic and vivid, it feels much more impressive and awesome than the ones in the prequel trilogy.
Those were good times, before the special effects become banal and overused

Anyone know if there's a clip showing the first scene of Obi-Wan after he scares off the Sand People to rescue Luke? The intro music of The Force is so iconic.
Malocosa 1 year ago
i love how they screw up the blocking so that Luke comes within like half an inch of slicing Obi-Wan's face off. AND HE DOESN'T BLINK. It's a screwup that actually helps sell OWK as a fearless jedi master. Neat.

This is the difference between movies that give actors even a LITTLE time and space to act, and movies that don't. It's that simple.

yoyoace02 1 year ago
@CommentaryX Seriously. I look at this scene and think "Look all that Lucas had to work with. This could have been the best story ever filmed." Then Lucas goes off and creates Episodes 1, 2, and 3..... It's bad enough that the dialogue in those prequels was corny and simplistic, but at the very least Lucas could have stuck to the described backstory. If Episodes 1, 2, and 3 were given to Chistopher Nolan, Ronald D Moore, or JJ Abrams, they might have actually been enjoyable.
erentheca 1 year ago
The dialogue Alec Guinness has in this scene is better than Episodes 1, 2, and 3 combined. The dialogue seems to imply that Anakin Skywalker was a young farmhand, around Luke's age, who was working with his brother Owen. At some point Obi Wan recruits Anakin and they go off to fight the Clone Wars together, and Owen finds the entire thing foolish, never seeing his brother again. They could have easily created a much better story if they had stayed true to the original material.
erentheca 1 year ago
@erentheca So spot on.That what make the new triology so frustrating. He had the background story. Thats all he needed to do was to expand it.
